Conversion of the refractory ammonia and acetic acid in catalytic wet air oxidation of animal byproducts

Wet air oxidation （WAO） and catalytic wet air oxidation （CWAO） of slaughtered animal byproducts （ABPs） were investigated. Two step experiment was carried out consisting of a non-catalysed WAO run followed by a CWAO run at 170-275 ℃, 20 MPa, and reaction time 180 min. The WAO （lst step） of sample （5 g/L total organic carbon （TOC）） yielded （82.0 ±4）% TOC removal and （78.4 ± 13.2）% conversion of the initial organic-N into NH4＋-N. Four metal catalysts （Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru） supported over alumina have been tested in catalytic WAO （2nd step） at elevated pH to enhance ammonia conversion and organic matter removal, particularly acetic acid. It was found that the catalysts Ru, Pt, and Rh had significant effects on the TOC removal （95.1%, 99.5% and 96.7%, respectively） and on the abatement of ammonia （93.4%, 96.7% and 96.3%, respectively） with high nitrogen selectivity. The catalyst Pd was found to have the less activity while Pt had the best performance. The X-Ray diffraction analysis showed that the support of catalyst was not stable under the experimental conditions since it reacted with phosphate present in solution. Nitrite and nitrate ions were monitored during the oxidation reaction and it was concluded that CWAO of ammonia in real waste treatment framework was in good agreement with the results obtained from the literature for ideal solutions of ammonia.

This study reviews carbon stocks and carbon dynamics in diferent types of forest land in Italy:ordinary managed forests,forest plantations,old growth forests,and trees outside *** management,combined with global environmental changes,increases the capacity of carbon uptake of ordinary managed *** plantations,particularly the ones subject to short-rotation forestry systems,potentially have high soil carbon accumulation,especially in agricultural *** growth forests,recently discovered as a carbon sink,cover a significant surface area in ***,the trees outside forests may represent a sensible carbon stock,especially in the context of urban *** study points out the management actions that can be implemented in Italy to increase the carbon stocks of different forest ecosystems,such as increasing the mean annual increment in managed forests,enhancement of the national network of old growth forests,and expansion of forest plantations in suitable *** aspects have important implications after the recent recognition of the Land Use,Land Use Change and Forestry sector in the EU target within the 2030 Climate and Energy Policy Framework.

Acute ischemic colitis during scuba diving: Report of a unique case

The presentation of clinical symptoms due to decompression during diving, varies significantly, as mainly minor disturbances for the gastrointestinal tract in particular have been reported. The following case debates whether diving can cause severe symptoms from the gastrointestinal system. We describe a clinical case of ischemic colitis presented in a 27-year-old male, who manifested abdominal pain while in the process of scuba diving 20 meters undersea, followed by bloody diarrhoea as soon as he ascended to sea level. Taking into account his past medical history, the thorough, impeccable clinical and laboratory examinations and presence of no other factors predisposing to ischemia of the colon, we assume that a possible relationship between diving conditions and the pathogenesis of ischemic colitis may exist. This unusual case might represent a hematologic manifestation of decompression sickness, due to increased coagulability and/or transient air emboli, occurring during a routine scuba diving ascent to sea level.

OBJECTIVE:To assess whether serum copper in Alzheimer disease(AD)correlates with cognitive scores,β-amyloid,and other CSF markers of ***:The authors studied copper,ceruloplasmin,total peroxide,and antioxidants levels(TRAP)in serum;β-amyloid in plasma;and copper,β-amyloid,h-tau,and P-tau in the CSF of 28 patients with AD and 25 healthy controls,in relation to clinical ***:Serum copper(p status Examination scores correlated positively with β-amyloid(r = 0.46,p = 0.002)and inversely with copper unexplained by ceruloplasmin(r =-0.45,p = 0.003).CONCLUSIONS:The authors’results confirm the existence of changes in copper component distribution,particularly the copper fraction unexplained by ceruloplasmin and support the hypothesis of a β-amyloid and copper connection in Alzheimer disease.
