Improvement of the Thermal Properties of Cement Mortars by Adding Banana Pseudo-Trunkfibres

The present work examined the influence on thermal properties of the incorporation of banana pseudo-trunkfibres in a cementitious matrix mortar that can be used as rendering or masonry block. The banana pseudo-trunkfibres are extracted, cut and characterized. Then the mortars are made with different proportions of fibres and characterized in order to identify the parameters influencing the characteristics of the material, both in the fresh and hardened state. The physical, mechanical and thermal tests carried out have shown an increase in the porosity and water absorption of the mortar with a decrease in the density, thus making the mortar lighter. It was also noted a decrease in the mortar’s flexural and compressive strengths as a function of the percentage of fibres;nevertheless, the values remain within an acceptable range.

Extraction and Characterization of Bagasse Fibres from Sugar Cane (<i>Saccharum officinarum</i>) for Incorporation into a Mortar

The paper reported a comparative study of the methods of extraction of vegetable fibres encountered in the literature;three main ones was chose, namely: combing, retting with pre-treatment of the bagasse in salt and distilled water, and Chemical extraction at three concentration levels of soda (2N, 1N, 0.1N) with pre-treatment of bagasse with salt water and distilled water. After extracting the fibres using these methods, it appeared that the natural methods (retting and combing) have a higher yield of around 70% compared to the chemical method which has a low yield of around 40%. The fibres obtained by the chemical extraction method (1N-BPD) had the best characteristics.

Elaboration and Characterization of a Fiber Composite Material Made of Petioles of the <i>Elaeis guineensis</i>(Oil Palm)

The aim of this study is to characterize physically and mechanically a polyester/fiber palm petiole composite material. This work made it possible to provide the local database of composite materials but also to develop agricultural waste. According to BSI 2782 standard three formulations [A (10% fiber, 90% polyester);B (20% fiber, 80% polyester) and C (30% fiber, 70% polyester)]. Water Absorption rate, density, compressive and three points bending tests are carried out on the samples obtained by the contact molding method for each formulation. The material composite obtained by adding fibers from palm oil petiole has a density of 17.98% lower than the one made of pure polyester. Fiber reinforcement rate has no impact on the density of the composite. Formulation A most absorbs water while formulation C has good tensile/compression characteristics and the greatest breaking stress in bending among the three formulations.

Influence of the Age of Bamboo Culm and Its Vertical Position on the Technological Properties of Bamboo Fibers: A Case of Bambusa vulgaris Species from Cameroonian Culture

Due to their interesting properties, bamboo fibers are more and more used as reinforcements in polymer matrices as a substitute for synthetic fibers. For their future service life, it is important to understand their physical and mechanical behavior over time in order to control the aging phenomenon within this fiber. The paper analyzed the influence of the age of the bamboo thatch and the vertical position of the Bambusa vulgaris species cultivated in Cameroon on the physicomechanical properties of the fibers extracted from the thatch. Fibers were mechanically extracted from three bamboo culms aged respectively 3 years (BV3), 4 years (BV4) and 5 years (BV5). The culms were thus identified according to their number of ramifications, and were felled no abated for a total of three culms. A section of about one meter on each of the parts (lower part, middle part, upper part) of these three culms was made for the opposite technological studies. Each age was therefore represented by three portions of thatch, one from the upper part, one from the middle part and the last from the lower part of the thatch, all giving a total number of nine samples taken and marked BV3inf, BV3moy, BV3sup, BV4inf, BV4moy, BV4sup, BV5inf, BV5moy, BV5sup before handling in the laboratory. Physical (density, moisture absorption rate) and mechanical (tensile tests according to DIN EN ISO 13934-1, natural durability) characterizations were used to better understand the mechanisms of this influence. In view of all the results obtained, the fiber from the upper part of the 3-year-old thatch (BV3sup) is the one with the best characteristics and is recommended for a better elaboration of bamboo fiber composites: (Density: 0.83;Absorption rate 11.7%;Young’s modulus: 7.4 GPa;Maximal stress: 64.3 MPa;Elongation at rupture: 1.1;Loss of mass natural durability: 7.63%).
