Sensing behavior of BN nanosheet toward nitrous oxide: A DfT study

In order to develop a sensor for the detection of toxic N2O molecules, the interaction of pristine and Aldoped BN nanosheets with an N2O molecule was investigated using density functional theory calculations. It was found that unlike the pristine sheet, the Al-doped sheet can effectively interact with the N2O molecule so that its electronic properties and conductivity are dramatically changed. We believe that replacing a B atom of the BN sheet with an Al atom may be a good strategy for improving the sensitivity of these nanosheets toward N2O, which cannot be trapped and detected by the pristine sheet.

Antioxidant and antifungal activities of two spices of mangrove plant extract

Objective:To evaluate the antifungal and the radical scavenging capacity related to antioxidant potential of ethanol and water extracts of leaves of Rhizophora mucronata(***)and Avicennia marina(***)mangrove plant species against five postharvest pathogenic ***:In vitro assessment of antioxidant and antifungal activities was evaluated in this present study for both aqueous and ethanol extracts prepared from leaves of *** and *** antioxidant activities of these mangroves were evaluated by using reducing power and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assays with butylated hydroxytoluene and L-(+)-ascorbic acid as ***:The result showed that the antioxidant activities of all extracts increased with increasing concentration of ***,the ethanol extracts of both species showed the highest antioxidant *** tests were then carried out by the disk diffusion *** ethanol extracts of both species showed antifungal activities on Penicillium purpurogenum,Penicillium chrysogenum,Penicillium notatum,Aspergillus niger,Alternaria alternata and Penicillium ***,none of the water extracts exhibited antifungal activity on the studied *** all the pathogens,tested Aspergillus flavus was the most resistant *** concentrations of extracts from *** and *** showed different amounts of control against tested fungal ***:This study indicated that mangrove species has natural antioxidant and antifungal properties.

Differences in nano-topography and tribochemistry of ZDDP tribofilms from variations in contact configuration with steel and DLC surfaces

In this work,we evaluated the effect of the counter-body material(the same or dissimilar)and contact configuration(moving or stationary body),at similar contact tribological conditions,on the tribochemical and nanotopography characteristics of adsorbed surface *** dialkyldithiophosphate(ZDDP),the best performing anti-wear additive,was used in self-mated steel/steel and DLC/DLC contacts,which were compared with mixed steel/DLC and DLC/steel contacts in 1-h and 6-h sliding *** macroscale(tribometer)and nanoscale(atomic force microscopy)friction,thickness,topography,and chemical(attenuated total reflection-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy)properties of the tribofilms were *** results revealed unexpectedly large differences in all the studied tribofilm parameters;this is because all the tribofilms are completely different;this includes the chemical composition,which is known to have a crucial effect on the nano-and macro-scale tribological *** results clearly demonstrate that the surface material,additives,and common contact operating parameters,that is,pressure,velocity,and temperature,crucially affect the ZDDP tribofilm as well as the position of the moving or stationary surface within the contact,and the material of the moving/stationary bodies.

Microcystin Levels in Selected Cyanobacteria Exposed to Varying Salinity

Microcystins produced by cyanobacteria pose a great threat to human health by releasing toxins upon cell death. In the present study, we studied microcystin production in the cyanobacterial strains Anabaena cylindrica (B629 and 2949) and fremyella diplosiphon (Sf33) exposed to 1, 2 and 4 g/L sodium chloride (NaCl). Cultures grown for 7 days in BG11/HEPES medium were pelleted, re-grown in the corresponding NaCl levels, and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) performed. ELISA assays revealed enhanced microcystin production in A. cylindrica B629 exposed to 4 g/L NaCl and A. cylindrica 29414 exposed to 2 and 4 g/L NaCl, after growth in the corresponding NaCl levels for 14 days. We observed a significant decrease (p > 0.05) in microcystin levels in the control strains after exposure to NaCl for 5 days. After exposure to 1, 2, or 4 g/L NaCl for 10 days, no microcystin release was observed in A. cylindrica B629, A. cylindrica 29414 or f. diplosiphon Sf33. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis identified the presence of an additional band at 120 - 130 kDa in A. cylindrica B629 exposed to 2 and 4 g/L NaCl, and at 14 kDa in cultures amended with 1 and 2 g/L NaCl as well as the untreated control, indicating that exposure to salinity induces alterations in protein expression.
