Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary hepatic malignant *** widespread use of liver imaging,various cirrhosis-related nodules are frequently detected in patients with chronic liver disease,while diverse hypervascular hepatic lesions are incidentally detected but undiagnosed on dynamic computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).However,use of hepatocyte-specific MR contrast agents with combined perfusion and hepatocyte-selective properties have improved diagnostic performance in detection and characterization of focal liver ***,the enhancement patterns observed during dynamic phases using hepatocyte-specific agents may be different from those observed during MRI using conventional extracellular fluid agents,leading to confusion in ***,we discuss useful tips for the differentiation of hepatocellular carcinoma from similar lesions in patients with and without chronic liver disease using liver MRI with hepatocyte-specific agents.

Plants respond to low-nutrient conditions through metabolic and morphology changes that increase their ability to survive and grow. The transcription factor RAP2.11 was identified as a component in the response to low potassium through regulation of the high-affinity K＋ uptake transporter AtHAK5 and other components of the low- potassium signal transduction pathway. RAP2.11 was identified through the activation tagging of Arabidopsis lines that contained a luciferase marker driven by the AtHAK5 promoter that is normally only induced by low potassium. This factor bound to a GCC-box of the AtHAK5 promoter in vitro and in vivo. Transcript profiling revealed that a large number of genes were up-regulated in roots by RAP2.11 overexpression. Many regulated genes were identified to be in functional cate- gories that are important in Iow-K＋ signaling. These categories included ethylene signaling, reactive oxygen species pro- duction, and calcium signaling. Promoter regions of the up-regulated genes were enriched in the GCCGGC motif also contained in the AtHAK5 promoter. These results suggest that RAP2.11 regulates AtHAK5 expression under Iow-K＋ con- ditions and also contributes to a coordinated response to low-potassium conditions through the regulation of other genes in the Iow-K＋ signaling cascade.

Inflammasomes are multi-protein signaling complexes that trigger the activation of inflammatory caspases and the maturation of interleukin-1β. Among various inflammasome complexes, the NLRP3 inflammasome is best characterized and has been linked with various human autoinflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Thus, the NLRP3 inflammasome may be a promising target for anti-inflammatory therapies. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the mechanisms by which the NLRP3 inflammasome is activated in the cytosol. We also describe the binding partners of NLRP3 inftammasome complexes activating or inhibiting the inflammasome assembly. Our knowledge of the mechanisms regulating NLRP3 inflammasome signaling and how these influence inflammatory responses offers further insight into potential therapeutic strategies to treat inflammatory diseases associated with dysregulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome,

AIM:To investigate gastric cancer screening and preventive behaviors among the relatives of patients with gastric cancer[i.e.,gastric cancer relatives(GCRs)].METHODS:We examined the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005(KNHANESⅢ) database and compared the gastric cancer screening and preventive behaviors of GCRs(n=261)with those of non-GCRs(n=454)and controls without a family history of cancer(n=2842).RESULTS:The GCRs were more likely to undergo gastric cancer screening compared with the control group(39.2%vs 32.3%,adjusted odds ratio:1.43,CI:1.05-1.95),although the absolute screening rate was *** patterns and smoking rates did not differ significantly between the groups,and a high proportion of GCRs reported inappropriate dietary habits(i.e.,approximately 95%consumed excessive sodium,30% were deficient in vitamin C,and 85%were deficient in dietary fiber).CONCLUSION:The gastric cancer screening and preventive behaviors of GCRs have yet to be *** increase awareness among GCRs,systematic family education programs should be implemented.

Evaluation of recurrence in gastric carcinoma: Comparison of contrast-enhanced computed tomography and positron emission tomography/computed tomography

AIM To compare the value of contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography(CT) and fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography(PET/CT) for detecting gastric carcinoma *** We retrospectively examined data from 2475 patients who underwent both contrast-enhanced abdominal CT and FDG PET/CT for the surveillance of gastric carcinoma curative resection. Patients had an interval of less than 1 mo between their CT and PET/CT scans. Sixty patients who had recurrence were enrolled. Among 1896 patients who did not have recurrence, 60 were selected by simple random sampling. All CT and PET/CT images were reviewed retrospectively by two reviewers blinded to all clinical and pathologic information except curative resection due to gastric carcinoma. RESULTS The pathological stage of the recurrence group was statistically significantly higher than that of the control group(P < 0.001). In the 60 patients who had recurrence, there were 79 recurrent lesions. Fortyfour patients had only one location of recurrence, 13 patients had two locations, and 3 patients had three. In the detection of patient-based overall recurrence, no statistically significant differences existed between the two modalities(P = 0.096). However, for peritoneal carcinomatosis, CT had a statistically significantly higher sensitivity compared to PET/CT(96% vs 50%, P = 0.001). Adenocarcinoma was the most common type of gastric carcinoma. On the pathology-based analysis, CT also had a statistically significantly higher sensitivity compared to PET/CT(98% vs 80%, P = 0.035).CONCLUSION Contrast-enhanced CT was superior to PET/CT in the detection of peritoneal carcinomatosis and pathologic type of adenocarcinoma.

Malignant mesothelioma of the greater omentum mimicking omental infarction:A case report

Mesothelioma develops most commonly in the pleura, and less frequently in the peritoneum. Usually, it manifests as diffuse peritoneal thickening and multiple nodules, and rarely as a solitary mass. We report a rare case of primary malignant mesothelioma of the greater omentum, which mimicked omental infarct. A 54-year-old Korean man was admitted because of severe abdominal pain of sudden onset. A tender mass with indistinct margins was palpated in the upper abdomen. Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography showed an ill- def ined mass in the greater omentum and little ascites in the peri-hepatic space, and neutrophil-dominant exudates were documented on paracentesis. Intravenous antibiotics and analgesics were given for omental infarction with superimposed infection, which resulted in symptomatic improvement. The imaging studies after a week revealed a growing mass and ascites. Laparoscopic surgery was performed and an 8 cm×3.3 cm greater omental mass was found, with multiple small nodules on the peritoneum, diaphragm, and pelvic cavity wall. Histological examination showed proliferating malignant epithelioid cells that stained strongly for calretinin, which was compatible with malignant mesothelioma. We recommend that primary omental mesothelioma should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with omental infarction, despite its rarity.

Synthesis and properties of Cr-Al-Si-N films deposited by hybrid coating system with high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) and DC pulse sputtering

The CrN and Cr-Al-Si-N films were deposited on Si wafer and SUS 304 substrates by a hybrid coating system with high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) and a DC pulse sputtering using Cr and AlSi targets under N2/Ar *** varying the sputtering current of the AlSi target in the range of 0-2.5 A,both the Al and Si contents in the films increased gradually from 0 to 19.1% and 11.1% (mole fraction),*** influences of the AlSi cathode DC pulse current on the microstructure,phase constituents,mechanical properties,and oxidation behaviors of the Cr-Al-Si-N films were investigated *** results indicate that the as-deposited Cr-Al-Si-N films possess the typical nanocomposite structure,namely the face centered cubic (Cr,Al)N nano-crystallites are embedded in the amorphous Si3N4 *** increasing the Al and Si contents,the hardness of the film first increases from 20.8 GPa for the CrN film to the peak value of 29.4 GPa for the Cr0.23Al0.14Si0.07 N film,and then decreases *** the meanwhile,the Cr0.23Al0.14Si0.07N film also possesses excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance that is much better than that of the CrN film at 900 or 1000 °C.

A series of experiments and simulations were performed to ascertain the rate at which phosphorus is released using a water quality model in Saemangeum Lake, an artificially constructed lake located in an estuary. The general inflow of seawater once a day contributed to the formation of a halocline in the lake water, which caused variation in the vertical concentration of dissolved oxygen. The halocline was mainly observed in the deep downstream regions of Saemangeum Lake that are close to the open sea. In contrast, the shallower regions upstream, which are under the influence of pollutant-loading from upstream rivers, exhibited high concentrations of chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, and Chl-a,resulting in lower water quality than the downstream regions. Laboratory experiments investigating the release of phosphorus at five representative locations showed that the upstream release flux, where the halocline was weaker, was higher than that downstream, where the initial level of phosphorus sedimentation was high. In particular, a need for an accurate evaluation method for the release of phosphorus at each site was suggested as slight differences were obtained depending on the estimation method used at each representative location. The results of the phosphorus release experiments led to the use of time-weighted integration(TWI), terminated time evaluation, and statistical mean value; the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code-National Institute of Environment Research model, a widely used water quality model for studying retention watersheds, was applied to the simulation of hydraulic and water quality characteristics for the Saemangeum Lake and its surrounding waters. The result of the water quality simulation indicated the highest reproducibility for release-time TWI so that TWI values were more useful in predicting phosphorus concentrations and the subsequent management of water quality.

Bi_(2)Te_(3)-based materials have drawn much attention from the thermoelectric community due to their excellent thermoelectric performance near room ***,the stability of existing n-type Bi_(2)(Te,Se)_(3)materials is still low due to the evaporation energy of Se(37.70 kJ mol^(-1))being much lower than that of Te(52.55 kJ mol^(-1)).The evaporated Se from the material causes problems in interconnects of the module while degrading the ***,we have developed a new approach for the high-performance and stable n-type Se-free Bi_(2)Te_(3)-based materials bymaximizing the electronic transport while suppressing the phonon transport,at the same *** generated FeTe_(2)nanoinclusions within the matrix during the melt-spinning and subsequent spark plasma sintering is the key to simultaneous engineering of the power factor and lattice thermal *** nanoinclusions change the fermi level of the matrix while intensifying the phonon scattering via *** a fine-tuning of the fermi level with Cu doping in the n-type Bi_(2)Te_(3)-0.02FeTe_(2),a high power factor of∼41×10^(-4)Wm^(-1)K^(-2)with an average zT of 1.01 at the temperature range 300-470 K are achieved,which are comparable to those obtained in n-type Bi_(2)(Te,Se)_(3)*** proposed approach enables the fabrication of high-performance n-type Bi_(2)Te_(3)-based materials without having to include volatile Se element,which guarantees the stability of the ***,widespread application of thermoelectric devices utilizing the n-type Bi_(2)Te_(3)-based materials will become possible.
