Recent advances in hematopoietic stem cells(HSCs)expansion by growth factors including angiopoietin-like proteins(Angptls)have opened up the possibility to use HSCs in regenerative ***,the unavailability of true in vitro HSCs expansion by these growth factors has limited the understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanism of HSCs ***,we report the functional role of mouse Angptls 1,2,3,4,6 and 7 and growth factors SCF,TPO,IGF-2 and FGF-1 on purified mouse bone-marrow(BM)Lineage-Sca-1+(Lin-Sca-1+)*** recombinant retroviral transduced-CHO-S cells that secrete Angptls in serum-free medium were used alone or in combination with growth factors(SCF,TPO,IGF-2 and FGF-1).None of the Angptls stimu-lated HSC proliferation,enhanced or inhibited HSCs colony formation,but they did support the survival of *** contrast,any of the six Angptls together with saturating levels of growth factors dramatically stimulated a 3-to 4.5-fold net expansion of HSCs compared to stimulation with a combination of those growth factors *** findings lead to an understanding of the basic function of Angptls on signaling pathways for the survival as well as expansion of HSCs in the bone marrow niche.

We report on a stroke patient who showed delayed gait recovery between 8 and 11 months after the onset of intracerebral hemorrhage. This 32-year-old female patient underwent craniotomy and drainage for right intracerebral hemorrhage due to rupture of an arteriovenous malformation. Brain MR images revealed a large leukomalactic lesion in the right fronto-parietal cortex. Diffusion tensor tractography at 8 months after onset revealed that the right corticospinal tract was severely injured. At this time, the patient could not stand or walk despite undergoing rehabilitation from 2 months after onset. It was believed that severe spasticity of the left leg and right ankle was largely responsible, and thus, antispastic drugs, antispastic procedures （alcohol neurolysis of the motor branch of the tibial nerve and an intramuscular alcohol wash of both tibialis posterior muscles） and physical therapy were tried to control the spasticity. These measures relieved the severe spasticity, with the result that the patient was able to stand at 3 months. In addition, the improvements in sensorimotor function, visuospatial function, and cognition also seemed to contribute to gait recovery. As a result, she gained the ability to walk independently on even floor with a left ankle foot orthosis at 11 months after onset. This case illustrates that clinicians should attempt to find the cause of gait inability and to initiate intensive rehabilitation in stroke patients who cannot walk at 3-6 months after onset.

Intramedullary spinal cord metastasis(ISCM) is very rare and its optimal treatment remains controversial. Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor(pNET) is a rare tumor that usually presents with hepatic metastasis. Hepatic failure due to tumor progression is the major cause of death in cases of pNET. To date,no report has described a case of ISCM from pNET. Although spinal cord metastasis of a solid tumor is uncommon,it is a critical condition that can cause a potentially irreversible loss of neurologic function. Here,we report the case of a 45-year-old man who presented with leg weakness and voiding difficulty,and was found to have ISCM from pNET. Surgical treatment prevented further neurological deterioration. This is the first case report of ISCM from pNET.

In this study, we prepared horn-like ZnO structures on carbon films（ZnO/CF） by electrodeposition and decorated the ZnO horns with different metals（Ag, Au, and Pt） via photodeposition（M-ZnO/CF）. Using M-ZnO/CF as photocatalysts, we examined ways to enhance solar hydrogen production from various points of view, such as modifying the intrinsic physical properties and thermodynamics of the materials, and varying the chemical environment during M-ZnO/CF fabrication. In particular, we focused on the effects of the carbon film and metals in M-ZnO/CF hybrid photocatalysts on solar hydrogen production. The type of metal nanoparticles is an important factor in solar hydrogen production because the deposition rate and electrical conductivity of each metal affect the proton-water reduction ability.

BACKGROUND The 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy combined with oxaliplatin or irinotecan is usually used in colorectal cancer(CRC).The addition of a targeted agent(TA) to this combination chemotherapy is currently the standard treatment for metastatic ***,the efficacy and safety of combination chemotherapy for metastatic CRC in patients aged above 80 years has yet to be *** To assess the clinical outcomes and feasibility of combination chemotherapy using a TA in extremely elderly patients with *** Eligibility criteria were:(1) Age above 80 years;(2) Metastatic colorectal cancer;(3) Palliative chemotherapy na?ve;(4) Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 0-1;and(5) Adequate organ *** received at least one dose of combination chemotherapy with or without *** was evaluated every 8 *** Of 30 patients,the median age of 15 patients treated with TA was 83.0 years and that of those without TA was 81.3 *** median progression-free survival(PFS) and overall survival(OS) in patients treated with TA were 7.4 mo and 15.4 mo,respectively,compared with 4.4 mo and 15.6 mo,respectively,in patients treated without *** was no significant difference in PFS(P:0.193) and OS(P:0.748) between patients treated with and without *** grade 3/4 hematologic toxicities were anemia(16.7%) and neutropenia(10.0%).After disease progression,the median OS of patients who were treated with and without salvage chemotherapy were 23.5 mo and 7.0 mo,respectively,suggesting significant difference in OS(P = 0.001).CONCLUSION Combination chemotherapy with TA for metastatic CRC may be considered feasible in patients aged above 80 years,when with careful *** chemotherapy can help improve OS in some selected of these elderly patients.

Macroalgae have long been used as biological indicators of marine ecosystem health worldwide due to their ecological importance and sensitivity to environmental stress.A number of previous studies have utilized macroalgal communities in monitoring surveys of environmental *** study examined the characteristics and patterns of marine macroalgal communities in the Yellow Sea off the western coast of *** were analyzed for the number of species,biomass,and coverage ratio by macroalgal *** the study period,82 macroalgal species(10 green algae,17 brown algae,and 55 red algae)were identified at the five study sites,with the highest number of species found at Gwanrido and Uido(both containing 41 species)and the lowest at Daeijakdo(27 species).The average biomass(via dry weight)was 98.63 g/m^(2),consisting of green algae(8.39 g/m^(2)),brown algae(35.08 g/m^(2)),and red algae(55.16 g/m^(2)).The dominant macroalgae species in terms of biomass were Corallina pilulifera,Sargassum thunbergii,and Ulva australis in the intertidal zones,and Botryocladia wrightii and Gelidium elegans in the subtidal ***,evenness,and diversity indices based on the biomass of abundant species were 5.08,0.65,and 2.30,respectively,over the entire study *** on the evaluation of the environmental states by the community indices,overall,the Ecological Evaluation Index of macroalgae communities in the study area was marked as“Good-Moderate”,but was determined as“ModerateLow”at several sites during *** results can be a direct approach in the assessment of coastal habitats in which anthropogenic as well as climate change influences persist.

Transistor size is constantly being reduced to improve performance as well as power consumption. For the channel length to be reduced, the corresponding gate dielectric thickness should also be reduced. Unfortunately, graphene devices are more complicated due to an extra capacitance called quantum capacitance （CQ） which limits the effective gate dielectric reduction. In this work, we analyzed the effect of CQ on device-scaling issues by extracting it from scaling of the channel length of devices. In contrast to previous reports for metal-insulator- metal structures, a practical device structure was used in conjunction with direct radio-frequency field-effect transistor measurements to describe the graphene channels. In order to precisely extract device parameters, we reassessed the equivalent circuit, and concluded that the on-state model should in fact be used. By careful consideration of the underlap region, our device modeling was shown to be in good agreement with the experimental data. CQ contributions to equivalent oxide thickness were analyzed in detail for varying impurity concentrations in graphene. Finally, we were able to demonstrate that despite contributions from CQ, graphene＇s high mobility and low-voltage operation allows for ~raphene channels suitable for next generation transistors.

This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the four stem taper models on Camellia japonica in Jeju Island, Korea using fit statistics and lack-of-fit statistics. The five statistical criteria that were used in this study were standard error of estimate(SEE), mean bias( E), absolute mean difference(AMD), coefficient of determination(R2), and root mean square error(RMSE). Results showed that the Kozak model 02 stem taper had the best performance in all fit statistics(SEE: 3.4708, E : 0.0040 cm, AMD : 0.9060 cm, R2 : 0.9870, and RMSE : 1.2545). On the other hand, Max and Burkhart stem taper model had the poorest performance in each statistical criterion(SEE: 4.2121, E : 0.2520 cm, AMD : 1.1300 cm, R2 : 0.9805, and RMSE: 1.5317). For the lack-of-fit statistics, the Kozak model 02 also provided the best performance having the best AMD in most of the relative height classes for diameter outside bark prediction and in most of the DBH classes for total volume prediction while Max and Burkhart had the poorest performance. These stem taper equations could help forest managers to better estimate the diameter outside bark at any given height, merchantable stem volumes and total stem volumes of the standing trees of Camellia japonica in the forests of Jeju Island, Korea.

Mutation of MED12 is not a frequent occurrence in prostate cancer of Korean patients

Prostate cancer is one of the major health care problems, but the molecular pathogenesis has been relatively insufficiently elucidated. Recently, whole exome sequencing of prostate cancer identified recurrent mutations involving MED12 in Caucasian patients, which finding was not reproduced in one subsequent study by Sanger sequencing. Thus, we investigated mutation status of MED12 in exons 2 and 26 by Sanger sequencing in 102 radical prostatectomy cases from Korean patients. The analysis found the mutation in none of the cases. Therefore, MED12 mutation does not appear to represent a significant molecular alteration in this cohort of patients according to the analysis by the traditional ＂gold standard.＂

BACKGROUND Snapping triceps syndrome(STS)is a rare disease,while occurrence of bilateral STS is extremely *** is usually accompanied by dislocation of the ulnar nerve and double snapping is a clinically important ***,to the best of our knowledge,there has been no report of bilateral STS in young active *** SUMMARY A 23-year-old male presented with a complaint of discomfort and snapping on the medial side of both elbows while performing *** physical examination,two distinct snaps that were both palpable and audible were detected on additional clinical *** ultrasonography showed that the ulnar nerve and the medial head of the triceps were dislocated anteriorly over the medial epicondyle of the elbow during flexion ***,he was diagnosed as dislocation of the ulnar nerve and *** anterior subcutaneous transposition of the ulnar nerve combined with partial resection of the snapping portion of the triceps was *** patient’s pain and snapping symptoms were resolved immediately after *** months later,the patient was completely asymptomatic and returned to normal *** STS should be included in the differential diagnosis for active young patients who present with painful snapping on the medial side of the elbow joint,particularly when dislocation of the ulnar nerve is *** sonography is used to assist in accurate diagnosis and differentiation between isolated dislocation of the ulnar nerve and STS.
