Age structure of a lizard along an elevational gradient reveals nonlinear lifespan patterns with altitude

Lifespan is one of the main components of life *** lifespans can be expected in marginal ***,in the case of ectotherms,lifespan typically increases with altitude,even though temperature-one of the main factors to determine ectotherms'life history-declines with *** pattern can be explained by the fact that a shorter activity time favors *** this study,we analyzed how lifespan and other life-history traits of the lizard Psammodromus algirus vary along a 2,200 m elevational gradient in Sierra Nevada(SE Spain).Populations at inter-mediate altitudes(1,200-1,700 m),corresponding to the optimal habitat for this species,had the shortest lifespans,whereas populations inhabiting marginal habitats(at both low and at high altitudes)lived ***,this lizard did not follow the typical pattern of ectotherms,as it also lived longer at the lower limit of its distribution,nor did it show a longer lifespan in areas with optimal *** results might be explained by a complex combination of different gradients along the mountain,namely that activity time decreases with altitude whereas food availability *** could explain why lifespan was maximum at both high(limited activity time)and low(limited food availability)altitudes,resulting in similar lifespans in areas with contrasting environmental *** findings also indicated that reproductive investment and body condition increase with elevation,suggesting that alpine populations are locally adapted.

Prey availability, prey selection, and trophic niche width in the lizard Psammodromus algirus along an elevational gradient

Mountains imply enormous environmental variation, with alpine habitats entailing harsh environ- ments, especially for ectotherms such as lizards. This environmental variability also may imply variation in prey availability. However, little is known about how lizard trophic ecology varies with elevation. In this study, we analyze diet, prey availability, prey selection, and trophic niche width in the lacertid lizard Psammodromus algirus along a 2,200-m elevational gradient in the Sierra Nevada （SE Spain）. The analysis of fecal samples has shown that Orthoptera, Formicidae, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, and Araneae are the main prey, although, according to their abundance in pitfall traps, Formicidae and Coleoptera are rejected by the lizard whereas Orthoptera, Hemiptera, and Araneae are preferred. Prey abundance and diversity increase with elevation and diet subtly varies along with the elevational gradient. The consumption of Coleoptera increases with elevation probably as a consequence of the lizard foraging more in open areas while basking. The electivity for Araneae increases with elevation. Araneae are rejected in the lowlands--where they are rela- tively abundant--whereas, at high elevation, this lizard positively selects them, despite they being less abundant. The lizard trophic niche width expands with elevation due to concomitant greater prey diversity and hence this lizard feeds on more prey types in highlands. Although no sex difference in diet has been found, the trophic niche is broader in females than males. As a whole, alpine lizards show a trophic niche simitar to that found at lower elevat（ons, suggesting that P. algirus is well adapted to the harsh environment found in alpine areas.

Studying the causes of parasite geographic distribution is relevant to understand ecological and evolutionary processes that affect host populations as well as for species conservation. Temperature is one of the most important environmental variables affecting parasite distribution, as raising temperatures positively affect development, reproduction, and rate of transmission of both endo- and ectoparasites. In this context, it is generally accepted that, in mountains, parasite abundance decreases with elevation. However, empirical evidence on this topic is limited. In the present study, we analyzed the elevational variation of hemoparasites and ectoparasites of a lizard, Psammodromus algirus, along a 2,200-m elevational gradient in Sierra Nevada （SE Spain）. As pre- dicted, ectoparasite （mites, ticks, mosquitoes, and sandflies） abundance decreased with elevation. However, hemoparasite prevalence and intensity in the lizard augmented with altitude, showing a pattern contrary to their vectors （mites）. We suggest that tolerance to hemoparasites may increase with elevation as a consequence of lizards at high altitudes taking advantage of increased body condition and food availability, and reduced oxidative stress. Moreover, lizards could have been selected for higher resistance against hemoparasites at lowlands （where higher rates of replication are expected）, thus reducing hemoparasite prevalence and load. Our findings imply that, in a scen- ario of climate warming, populations of lizards at high elevation may face increased abundance of ectoparasites, accompanied with strong negative effects.

Intracellular NHX-Type Cation/H＋ Antiporters inPlants

Cells depend on the homeostatic maintenance of pHwithin specific cellular compartments to ensure optimalconditions for metabolic and enzymatic processes as wellas protein structure and function. In the animal secre-tory pathway, cells maintain distinct luminal pHs withinvarious compartments （Paroutis et al., 2004）. Among themany molecular players that contribute to pH and ionhomeostasis in plants, Na＋（K＋）/H＋ exchangers （also knownas NHX-type cation/H＋ antiporters） appear to be particu-larly important for the regulation of a wide variety ofphysiological processes, including cell expansion, cellvolume regulation, osmotic adjustment, pH regulation,membrane trafficking, protein processing, and cellularstress responses （Pardo et al., 2006; Rodriguez-Rosaleset al., 2009; Bassil et al., 2012）. In plants, NHX antiportersappeared early in evolution and are ubiquitously encodedmembers of the CPA1 cation/H＋ antiporters subgroupthat belongs to the large family of monovalent cation/H＋ transporters CPA （Brett et al., 2005）. NHX antiport-ers are found, thus far, in all sequenced plant genomes（Bassil et al., 2012; Chanroj et al., 2012）. In Arabidopsis,the NHX family consists of eight isoforms, six of whichare intracellular （AtNHXl-AtNHX6）, located either to thevacuole （AtNHXl to AtNHX4） or endosomes （AtNHX5 andAtNHX6） and an additional two more divergent members（AtNHX7/SOSl and AtNHX8） at the plasma membrane（Bassil et al., 2012）. Orthologous sequences in each of thethree classes （plasma membrane, vacuolar, or endosomal）appear in all sequenced genomes, suggesting that distinctfunctional NHX classes appeared early in evolution andmay have conserved roles that are compartment-specific（Bassil et al., 2012）. To analyze the molecular events that occur in the developing mandible, we examined the expression of 8803 genes from samples taken at different time points during rat postnatal mandible development. Total RNA was extracted from the mandibles of 1-day-old, 1-week-old, and 2-week-old rats. Complementary RNA (cRNA) was synthesized from cDNA and biotinylated. Fragmented cRNA was hybridized to RGU34A GeneChip arrays. Among the 8803 genes tested, 4344 were detectable. We identified 148 genes with significantly increased expression, and 19 genes with significantly decreased expression. A comprehensive analysis appears to be an effective method of studying the complex process of development.

Age-dependent eradication of Helicobacter pylori in Japanese patients

AIM:To determine the general risk factors affecting the failure rate of first-line eradication therapy in Japanese patients with Helicobacter pylori(***)***:The present study enrolled 253 patients who had an *** infection,underwent gastroendoscopy,and were treated with *** eradication *** therapy consisted of 30 mg lansoprazole plus 750 mg amoxicillin and 400 mg clarithromycin twice daily for 7 *** of the patients underwent a 13 C urea breath test at least 1 mo after the completion of eradication *** current study investigated the independent factors associated with successful *** eradication using a multiple logistic regression ***:The overall success rate in the patients was 85.8%.Among the general factors examined in the multivariate analyses,only having an age less than 50 years was found to be significantly associated with a poor response to *** ***,side effects were the only clinical factors in the patients who were under 50 years of age that significantly influenced the poor response to *** ***:***-positive elderly patients should undergo eradication *** addition,it is necessary to improve *** eradication therapy in younger patients.

Synthesis and Thermal Behavior of Metallic Cobalt Micro and Nanostructures

In this contribution, a comparative study of metallic cobalt micro and nanoparticles obtained in solution by four different chemical routes is reported. Classic routes such as borohydride reduction in aqueous media and the so-called polyol methodology were used to obtain the cobalt nanostructures to be studied. Using CTAB as surfactant, cobalt hollow nanostructures were obtained. The use of strong reducing agents, like sodium borohydride, favors the formation of quasi-monodispersed nanoparticles of about 2 nm size but accompanied with impurities; for hydrazine(a mild reducer), nanoparticles of larger size are obtained which organize in spherical microagglomerates. Valuable information on the particles thermal stability and on nature of the species anchored at their surface was obtained from thermogravimetric curves. The samples to be studied were characterized from UV-vis, IR, X-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy images(scanning and transmission).

A Theoretical Dynamic Analysis of a Regenerative Heat Exchanger Assembly in a Fluctuating Flow Regime

A fluctuating flow was used to investigate the thermo-fluid characteristic of a regenerative heat exchanger assembly designed, modelled, built and constructed for the used in Stifling engines applications. Vibration of the regenerative heat exchanger assembly was a problem to deal with during the experimental investigation. Hence, a dynamic analysis of the regenerative heat exchanger assembly was undertaken. The main sources of excitation in vibrations of the regenerative heat exchanger assembly were investigated and calculated based initially on the empirical correlations provided in the literature. Thereafter, a mathematical model of the regenerative heat exchanger assembly was developed based on the energy equations for each moving part of the assembly. The kinetic and potential energy equations were formulated for each moving part of the regenerative heat exchanger assembly. From the kinetic and potential equations, the Lag, range operator was defined, and then the Lagrange formulations were used to derive the differential equations representing the dynamic behavior of each moving part of the assembly. The differential equations were integrated to determine the system natural frequencies. These were then compared to the frequency on excitation in vibrations in order to predict the regenerative heat exchanger working conditions despite the existence of vibration in the system.
