Mortality is a well-established patient-important outcome in critical care *** contrast,morbidity is less uniformly reported(given the myriad of critical care illnesses and complications of each)but may have a common end-impact on a patient’s functional capacity and health-related quality-of-life(HRQoL).Survival with a poor quality-of-life may not be acceptable depending on individual patient values and ***,as mortality decreases within critical care,it becomes increasingly important to measure intensive care unit(IcU)survivor *** measurements with a preference-based scoring algorithm can be converted into health utilities on a scale anchored at 0(representing death)and 1(representing full health).They can be combined with survival to calculate quality-adjusted life-years(QALY),which are one of the most widely used methods of combining morbidity and mortality into a composite *** QALYs have been use for health-technology assessment decision-making,an emerging and novel role would be to inform clinical decision-making for patients,families and healthcare providers about what expected HRQoL may be during and after IcU *** care randomized control trials(RcTs)have not routinely measured or reported HRQoL(until more recently),likely due to incapacity of some patients to participate in patient-reported outcome *** differences in HRQoL measurement tools can lead to non-comparable *** this end,we propose the validation of a gold-standard HRQoL tool in critical care,specifically the *** combined health-utility and mortality(disaggregated)and QALYs(aggregated)can be reported,with disaggregation allowing for determination of which components are the main drivers of the QALY *** use of HRQoL,health-utility,and QALYs in critical care RcTs has the potential to:(1)Increase the likelihood of finding important effects if they exist;(2)improve research efficiency;and(3)help inform optimal m

Quantum computing generates much interest for its potential ability to outperform classical computing at many tasks. Photons have been considered as a promising candidate for implementing quantum computation owing to their properties of long coherence time, ease of manipulation and light-speed transmission. The integrated quantum photonic platform is an engineering solution proposed for robust and exquisite control of photonic quantum information by allowing generation, manipulation and detection of photons on a single chip. Here we use integrated silicon photonics and the linear combination of quantum operators scheme to realise a fully programmable two-qubit quantum processor, which enables universal two-qubit quantum information processing in optics for the first time. The device is fabricated with readily available cMOS based processing and comprises more than 200 photonic components, including 4 nonlinear photon-sources, 4 filters, 82 beam splitters and 58 individually addressable phase shifters. It allows to generate entangled photons and to initialise, operate and analyze arbitrary two-qubit states and processes on chip. To demonstrate performance, we programmed the device to implement 98 different two-qubit unitary operations（with average quantum process fidelity of 93.2±4.5%）, a two-qubit quantum approximate optimization algorithm and efficient simulation of Szegedy directed quantum walks. All results presented require about 100,000 experiment configurations. The chip performs with high fidelity, it is inherently stable and repeatable under continuous operation and it can be reprogrammed at k Hz rate, showing an ideal platform for quantum information processing applications. This fosters further use of the linear combination architecture with silicon photonics for future photonic quantum processors.

Drosophila melanogaster,*** common fhiit fly,is a simple organism that may give a rapid,high-throughput response in regard to the therapeutic efficacy of nanoparticles and drugs,while circumventing the high environmental and monetary cost of today's typical in vivo assays involving more complex animals,along with the immeasurable suffering imposed onto *** we give the progress report on our effort to turn *** into a model organism for the in vivo testing of Blood-Brain Barrier(BBB)penetration of nanoparticles and the treatment of infectious *** show that orally ingested superparamagnetic nanoparticles successfully cross the BBB in *** and localize to the optic lobes of the third instar larval brain,while causing no adverse effects to the invertebrate *** also show that both orally ingested calcium phosphate nanoparticles and biofilm-forming *** localize to the Drosophila crop,the food storage organ of the fly,which shrinks in response to *** model does not induce mortality consequential to infection and the effects of the internalization and proliferation of the microbes are evaluable by measuring the crop parameters,including fluorescence intensity and *** development of these two models could simplify the preclinical testing of medical treatments and of pharmaceutical agents for neurological and infectious disease,while ensuring robust and reliable levels of statistical significance at low cost.

Research on silicon-based tandem heterojunction solar cells (STHSc) incorporating metal oxides is one of the main directions for development of high-efficiency solar cells. In this work, the optical characteristics of a STHSc consisting of a ZnO/cu2O subcell on top of a silicon-based subcell were studied by optical modelling. cu2O is a direct-gap p-type semiconductor which is attractive for application in solar cells due to its high absorptance of ultra-violet and visible light, nontoxicity, and low-cost producibility. Highly Al-doped ZnO and undoped cu2O thin films were prepared on quartz substrates by magnetron sputter deposition. Thermal annealing of the cu2O layer at 900°c enhances the electrical properties and reduces optical absorption, presumably as a result of increased grain size. Hall effect measurements show that the majority carrier (hole) mobility increases from 10 to 50 cm2/V×s and the resistivity decreases from 560 to 200 Ω×cm after annealing. A cu2O absorber layer of 2 μm thickness will generate about 10 mA/cm2 of photocurrent under AM1.5G illumination. The optical analysis of the STHSc involved calculating the spectral curves for absorptance, transmittance, and reflectance for different thicknesses of the thin film layers constituting the ZnO/cu2O subcell. The complex refractive indices of the thin films were derived from spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements and implemented in the simulation model. The lowest reflectance and highest transmittance for the ZnO/cu2O subcell are obtained for a thickness of approximately 80 nm for both the top and bottom AZO layers. The SiNx anti-reflection coating for the c-Si bottom subcell must be optimized to accommodate the shift of the photon spectrum towards longer wavelengths. By increasing the thickness of the SiNx layer from 80 nm to 120 nm, the total reflectance for the STHSc device is reduced from 12.7% to 9.7%.
