Background With rising concerns regarding the effects of red meat on human and environmental health,a growing number of livestock producers are exploring ways to improve production systems.A promising avenue includes agro-ecological practices such as rotational grazing of locally adapted ***,growing consumer interest in pasture-finished meat(i.e.,grass-fed)has raised questions about its nutritional ***,the goal of this study was to determine the impact of two common finishing systems in North American bison—pasture-finished or pen-finished on concentrates for 146 d—on metabolomic,lipidomic,and fatty acid profiles of striploins(*** lumborum).Results Six hundred and seventy-one(671)out of 1570 profiled compounds(43%)differed between pasture-and penfinished conditions(n=20 animals per group)(all,Plative to pasture-finished animals,the muscle of pen-finished animals displayed elevated glucose metabolites(~1.6-fold),triglycerides(~2-fold),markers of oxidative stress(~1.5-fold),and proteolysis(~1.2-fold).In contrast,pasture-finished animals displayed improved mitochondrial(~1.3-fold higher levels of various Krebs cycle metabolites)and carnitine metabolism(~3-fold higher levels of long-chain acyl carnitines)(all Plso concentrated higher levels of phenolics(~2.3-fold),alpha-tocopherol(~5.8-fold),carotene(~2.0-fold),and very long-chain fatty acids(~1.3-fold)in their meat,while having lower levels of a common advanced lipoxidation(4-hydroxy-nonenal-glutathione;~2-fold)and glycation end-product(N6-carboxymethyllysine;~1.7-fold)(all Pl,and three phenolics commonly found in alfalfa were~2.5-fold higher in pen-finished animals(all Plants rich in those compounds,may be *** Pasture-finishing(i.e.,grass-fed)broadly improves bison metabolic health and accumulates additional po

There is a need to develop safe and effective downstream passage for diadromous anguillid eels on large rivers,where the combination of physical screening and bypass structures that is used to protect eel on smaller rivers is *** Eel Passage Research Center was established in 2013 to address the challenge of providing safe passage for out-migrating silver-stage American eel(Anguilla rostrata)on the *** River,the outflow of the laurentian Great lakes,which is spanned by two large,mainstem hydroelectric generating *** Center’s goal is to develop the technology to behaviorally guide eel to a collection point for capture and transfer around the two generating *** achieve this goal,three parallel initiatives were undertaken;1)research into behavioral guidance techniques suitable for guiding out-migrating eel on large,high flow rivers,2)the evaluation of sonar technologies for detection of eel,necessary for assessing in situ guidance,and 3)the commissioning of literature reviews for the most promising guidance technologies.A number of behavioral guidance stimuli,including electricity,flow,sound and electromagnetic fields were examined in laboratory and flume settings for their utility in guiding out-migrating silver-stage *** the techniques examined,only sound showed any promise for *** sonar technologies(Simrad 120 kHz EK60 echosounder,Sound Metrics ARIS Explorer 1800 sonar,and the Kongsberg Mesotech 500 kHz M3 multi-mode multibeam sonar)were evaluated to determine if existing acoustic technologies could be used to estimate the relative abundance and distribution of out-migrating silver-phase American eel in the *** *** the ARIS unit could successfully identify eel targets,and only over a short(lume of sonar data accumulated over a portion of a single outmigration season contributed to the successful development of machine learning tools to automate the identification of American e

An Isothermal Study of the Electrochemical Performance of Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

A two-dimensional along the channel micro-scale isothermal model of a SOFC is developed and validated against experimental data and other simulated results from literature. The steady state behaviour of the cell was determined by numerical solution of the combined transport, continuity and kinetic equations. An important characteristic of the model is the consideration of the triple phase boundary as a distinct layer. The model is capable of predicting the cell performance including polarisation behaviour and power output. The model is used to study the effect of the support structure, geometric parameters and the effect of operating conditions on cell performance. Several parametric studies include the effect of operating conditions and geometric parameters on cell performance with a view to optimising the cell. The simulation results showed that the anode supported SOFC displayed the best performance with the activation and ohmic overpotentials being responsible for most of the voltage losses in the cell.

1 Introduction In an aging society with persistent high prevalence of cardiovascular disease （CVD） in the elderly population, the health care system is facing an increasing challenge to effectively care for these patients. However, due to the under-representation of CVD patients over 75 years of age in clinical trials, assessing safety and efficacy of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, the evidence for managing elderly CVD patients is especially limited. Physiological changes of aging intertwined with pathophysiology of CVD, and comorbid conditions often complicate clinical management.

A new paradigm employing 24-h movement guidelines that combines recommendations for movement behaviors across the whole day(physical activities of all intensities,sedentary behaviors,and sleep)is gaining momentum around the globe,and several jurisdictions are developing and releasing evidence-informed public health guidelines embracing this approach.1,2 The Sedentary Behavior Research Network(SBRN),the world’s largest network of researchers and health professionals focusing specifically on the health impact of sedentary behaviors,embraces this new paradigm and has worked to normalize the integration of sedentary behaviors into the movement-behavior paradigm.

Ternary I-III-VI2 nanocrystals(NCs),such as AgInS_(2) and CuInS_(2),are garnering interest as heavy-metal-free materials for photovoltaics,luminescent solar concentrators,lEDs,and *** origin of the emission and absorption properties in this class of NCs is still a subject of *** theoretical and experimental studies revealed that the characteristic Stokesshifted and long-lived luminescence of stoichiometric CuInS_(2) NCs arises from the detailed structure of the valence band featuring two sublevels with different *** same valence band substructure is predicted to occur in AgInS_(2) NCs,yet no experimental confirmation is available to ***,we use complementary spectroscopic,spectro-electrochemical,and magneto-optical investigations as a function of temperature to investigate the band structure and the excitonic recombination mechanisms in stoichiometric AgInS_(2) *** transmission measurements reveal the signatures of two subbands with opposite parity,and photoluminescence studies at cryogenic temperatures evidence a dark state emission due to enhanced exchange interaction,consistent with the behavior of stoichiometric CuInS_(2) *** the temperature as well as applying reducing electrochemical potentials further suppress electron trapping,which represents the main nonradiative channel for exciton decay,leading to nearly 100%emission efficiency.

Genomic regions underlying agronomic traits in linseed(linum usitatissimum l.) as revealed by association mapping

The extreme climate of the Canadian Prairies poses a major chal enge to improve yield. Although it is possible to breed for yield per se, focusing on yield-related traits could be advantageous because of their simpler genetic architecture. The Canadian flax core col ection of 390 accessions was genotyped with 464 simple sequence repeat markers, and phenotypic data for nine agronomic traits including yield, bol s per area, 1,000 seed weight, seeds per bol , start of flowering, end of flowering, plant height, plant branching, and lodging col ected from up to eight environments was used for association mapping. Based on a mixed model （principal component analysis （PCA） t kinship matrix （K））, 12 significant marker-trait associations for six agronomic traits were identi-fied. Most of the associations were stable across environments as revealed by multivariate analyses. Statistical simulation for five markers associated with 1000 seed weight indicated that the favorable al eles have additive effects. None of the modern cultivars carried the five favorable al eles and the maximum number of four observed in any accessions was mostly in＆amp;nbsp;breeding lines. Our results confirmed the complex genetic architecture of yield-related traits and the inherent difficulties associated with their identification while il ustrating the potential for improvement through marker-assisted selection.
