Changes in Mediterranean mesocarnivore communities along urban and ex-urban gradients

Urbanization causes wildlife habitat loss, fragmentation, and the replacement of specialist species by generalists and/or exotic taxa. Because mesocarnivores are particularly vulnerable to habitat modifications, the rapid expansion of urban areas and the increasing trend for ex-urban development occurring in Mediterranean ecosystems may be major drivers of change in mesocarnivore communities. We combined camera trapping and sign surveys to quantify the richness and relative abundance of a set of wild and domestic mesocarnivores. We quantified these variables controlling for the gradient of urbanism, ex-urbanism, and other environmental variables in patches of natural vegetation in the region of Madrid (central Spain), and a non-urbanized control area ~220 km south of Madrid city. Using conditional autoregressive models (CAR) and model selection procedures, we found that urbanization influenced mesocarnivore community composition but this influence was not detrimental for all the species tested. Generalist carnivores such as the red foxVulpes vulpeswere more abundant in urban and ex-urban areas. Ex-urban development creates overlapping areas between wild and domestic species (such as the domestic catFelis catusand the wildcatFelis silvestris) but contact between wild and domestic carnivores in natural areas is unlikely. Detection of species in the control area was very low. Therefore, the impact of urbanization in causing changes in mesocarnivore communities may be less than other factors such as illegal predator culling.

A Possible Hypoallergenic Cereal in Wheat Food Allergy and Baker’s Asthma

Background: Wheat is a potent allergen source and is one of the causes of baker’s asthma and food allergy. The best strategy for managing food hypersensitivity involves strict avoidance of the trigger. However, wheat is quite difficult to avoid. Several alternative strategies for the treatment of food allergy are under study. Spelt is a possible hypoallergenic crop that may be tried in patients with wheat allergy. Methods: We have evaluated the allergenic IgE hypersensitivity mediated by spelt in wheat allergic patients. Overall, 66 patients who suffered from baker’s asthma or food allergy (45 males and 21 females, mean age 28.6 ± 12.9 years) were included. We have also compared its reactivity with standard- ized extracts from wheat and with purified non-specific lipid transfer proteins from wheat (Tri a 14) and from peach (Pru p 3). Immunodetection with spelt and common bread wheat extracts (Triticum aestivum, cultivar Astral) was per- formed. Fresh wheat and spelt grain extracts were used both for oral and bronchial challenge and skin tests. Specific IgE detection to different cereals was performed using the Immuno CAP System (Phadia, Uppsala, Sweden). The bronchial challenge was positive with wheat Astral in 44 (67%) patients, all of them suffered from asthma. Thirteen (29.54%) of these 44 patients had negative the challenge with spelt. The oral challenge with wheat Astral was positive in 22 (33%) patients with wheat food allergy, and the same test was positive in only in 6 of them with spelt (27.3%). The diagnostic yield (sensitivity, specificity and predictive values) of routine tests in determining spelt allergy by specific positive challenge responses was determined. Prick tests for spelt versus positive challenge tests had a good sensitivity (94%, 86.5 - 99.4;95%CI) and specificity (86%, 84 - 90;95% CI) for the diagnosis of spelt allergy. Comparative Analysis of the Antioxidant and Free-Radical Scavenging Activities of Different Water-Soluble Extracts of Green, Black and Oolong Tea Samples

Extracts of 40 green, black or oolong high quality tea samples from China, Japan or India among others, have been prepared according to the manufacturer instructions and assayed for total polyphenols content using the Folin-Ciocalteu phenol reagent. In addition, the antioxidant activity was assessed by the CUPRAC method and the free-radical scavenging activity was determined using the antioxidant-promoting decay of the stable free-radical DPPH. Caffeine and the most important catechins were identified using RP-HPLC previously validated method. Results from this study suggest that teas, even though they content similar amounts of caffeine, differ considerably in polyphenolic content and therefore in antioxidant and free-radical scavenging activities, depending on the part of the plant used and the process applied to the material for the preparation of the final tea presentation. Correlations among Folin-Ciocalteau’s reactivity of tea samples, the neocuproine reactivity, the DPPH decolourization and the HPLC analysis suggest that the antioxidant activity is due essentially to polyphenolic compounds present in teas, mainly EGCG. The best extraction method of tea powder was the one indicated by dealers. In general, the richest samples belong to green teas and the poorest samples belong to the black teas.

神经胶质瘤的高侵袭性是导致临床化疗效果欠佳的最主要原因。胶质瘤细胞向正常组织的侵润在限制化疗药物疗效发挥的同时也增加了外科手术的复杂性。基于以上背景本次研究提出降低肿瘤细胞的侵袭性可以增加化疗效果的设想。体外研究发现丙咪嗪蓝可以通过抑制肿瘤细胞中NADPH氧化酶介导的氧自由基产生并调节肌动蛋白的表达来降低侵袭性。作者使用一种具有人脑肿瘤关键性特征的侵袭型胶质瘤大鼠作为动物模型,使用丙咪嗪蓝脂质体后,大鼠的肿瘤组织更为密实。以丙咪嗪脂质体结合阿霉素治疗作为实验组,单独使用阿霉素治疗作为对照组,结果发现实验组大鼠存活时间均超过180天,其有效比例明显高于对照组(33%)。本次研究的结果对于结合丙咪嗪与阿霉素治疗神经胶质瘤的治疗模式探讨提供了极其重要的理论支持。
