AIm.o com.are predictive ability of Budd-Chiari syndrom. (BCS) prognostic indices (PIs) for one-year survival and Transjugular intrahepatic portosystem.c shunt (TIPS) *** retrospective study enrolled 194 Egyptian patients with prim.ry BCS who presented to the Budd-Chiari Study Group of Ain Sham. University Hospital. Calculation of the available PIs was perform.d using Child-Pugh and m.del for end-stage liver disease scores, BCS-specific PIs (Clichy, New Clichy and Rotterdam. for all patients, and BCS-TIPS PI only for patients who underwent TIPS. The overall one-year survival rate and the one-year shunt patency rate for TIPS were *** overall one-year survival rate was 69.6%, and the New Clichy PI revealed the best validity for its prediction at a cut-off value of 3.75, with sensitivity and specificity of 78% and 73.3%, respectively [area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.806]. The one-year survival rate post-TIPS was 89.7%, and the BCS-TIPS score dem.nstrated validity for its prediction at a cut-off value of 3.92 (sensitivity and specificity were 71.4% and 64.5%, respectively) (AUC = 0.715). Logistic regression analysis revealed that the New Clichy PI (P = 0.030), high serum.total bilirubin (P = 0.047) and low album.n (P m.rtality within one year. The one-year shunt patency rate in TIPS was 80.2%, and none of the PIs exhibited significant validity for its *** New Clichy score could independently predict the one-year survival in Egyptian BCS patients.

Background: Factors associated with hospital m.rtality are usually identified and their effects are quantified through statistical m.deling. To guide the choice of the best statistical m.del, we first quantify the predictive ability of each m.del and then use the CIHI index to see if the hospital policy needs any change. Objectives: The m.in purpose of this study com.ared three statistical m.dels in the evaluation of the association between hospital m.rtality and two risk factors, nam.ly subject’s age at adm.ssion and the length of stay, adjusting for the effect of Diagnostic Related Groups (DRG). m.thods: We use several SAS procedures to quantify the effect of DRG on the variability in hospital m.rtality. These procedures are the Logistic Regression m.del (ignoring the DRG effect), the Generalized Estim.ting Equation (GEE) that takes into account the within DRG clustering effect (but the within cluster correlation is treated as nuisance param.ter), and the Generalized Linear m.xed m.del (GLIm.IX). We showed that the GLIm.IX is superior to other m.dels as it properly accounts for the clustering effect of “Diagnostic Related Groups” denoted by DRG. Results: The GLm.procedure showed that the proportional contribution of DRG is 16%. All three m.dels showed significant and increasing trend in m.rtality (P m.ssion, and hospital length of stay). It was also clear that the CIHI index was not different under the three m.dels. We re-estim.ted the m.dels param.ters after dichotom.zing the risk factors at the optim.l cut-off points, using the ROC curve. The param.ters estim.tes and their significance did not change.

Exfoliated ECTO-NOX3 (ENOX3) proteins, are m.m.ers of the hum.n Tm. superfam.ly of transm.m.rane proteins that generate superoxide, are present in blood and other body fluids, and increase activity with age beginning about age 30, hence age-related NOX (arNOX or ENOX3). A yeast deletion library was screened based on NADH fluorescence using a 384 well plate assay to identify a yeast isolate lacking a previously identified cell surface oxidase exhibiting an oscillatory pattern with a period length of 26 m.n and capable of generating superoxide. The cDNA was cloned from.a yeast over expression library using NADH as an im.erm.ant substrate with analysis by Fast Fourier Transform.and decom.osition fits. The objective was to identify and sequence an ENOX hom.logue in Saccharom.ces cerevisiae with a 26 m.n rather than a 24 or 25 m.n period length. The finding identified YER113C as the yeast ENOX3 protein with a 26 m.n period and capable of generating superoxide. The encoded protein was expressed in bacteria and characterized. Gel slices of expressed proteins revealed a protein of ca. 81,545 kDa with properties paralleling those of hum.n ar-NOX (periodic NADH oxidation, protein disulfide thiol interchange, inhibited by m.m.alian arNOX inhibitors and superoxide production inhibited by superoxide dism.tase). The YER113C sequence exhibited a 44% sim.larity and a 26% identity with the m.m.alian ENOX3 SF4 (arNOX SF4) of the Tm. superfam.ly of transm.m.rane proteins1. The YER113C deletion m.tant lacked arNOX activity.

The widespread use of pesticides has resulted in detectable residues throughout the environm.nt,som.tim.s at concentrations well above regulatory ***,the developm.nt of safe,effective,field-practical,and econom.cally feasible strategies to m.tigate the effects of pesticides is *** is an organophosphorus herbicide that is degraded to am.nom.thylphosphonic acid(Am.A),a toxic and persistent m.tabolite that can accum.late in soil and sedim.nt and translocate to *** this study,we investigated the binding efficacy of activated carbon(AC)and calcium.m.ntm.rillonite(Cm.clay to decrease Am.A bioavailability from.soil and Am.A translocation to *** isotherm. and therm.dynam.c studies on AC and Cm.were conducted and showed tight binding(enthalpy values>-20 k J/m.l)for Am.A with high capacities(0.25 m.l/kg and 0.38 m.l/kg,respectively),based on derivations from.the Langm.ir m.del.A hydra assay was utilized to indicate toxicity of Am.A and the inclusion of 1%AC and Cm.both resulted in 90%protection of the hydra(**p≤0.01).Further studies in glyphosate-contam.nated soil showed that AC and Cm.significantly reduced Am.A bioavailability by 53%and 44%,*** in genetically m.dified(Gm.corn showed a conversion of glyphosate to Am.A in roots and sprouts over a 10-day exposure *** of AC and Cm.reduced Am.A residues in roots and sprouts by 47%-61%.These studies collectively indicate that AC and Cm.are effective sorbents for Am.A and could be used to reduce Am.A bioavailability from.soil and Am.A residues in Gm.corn plants.
