Normal cells are hijacked by cancer cells forming together heterogeneous tumor masses immersed in aberrant communication circuits that facilitate tumor growth and *** the well characterized angiogenic effect of some tumor-derived factors;others,such as BDNF,recruit peripheral nerves and *** neurogenic switch,activated by tumor-derived neurotrophins and extracellular vesicles,attracts adjacent peripheral fibers(autonomic/sensorial)and neural progenitor ***,tumor-associated nerve fibers can guide cancer cell ***,IL-1β,CCL2,PGE2,among other chemotactic factors,attract natural immunosuppressive cells,including T regulatory(Tregs),myeloid-derived suppressor cells(MDSCs),and M2 macrophages,to the tumor *** leukocytes further exacerbate the aberrant communication circuit releasing factors with neurogenic ***,cancer cells directly evade immune surveillance and the antitumoral actions of natural killer cells by activating immunosuppressive mechanisms elicited by heterophilic complexes,joining cancer and immune cells,formed by PD-L1/PD1 and CD80/CTLA-4 plasma membrane ***,nervous and immune cells,together with fibroblasts,endothelial,and bone-marrow-derived cells,promote tumor growth and enhance the metastatic properties of cancer *** by the demonstrated,but restricted,power of anti-angiogenic and immune cell-based therapies,preclinical studies are focusing on strategies aimed to inhibit tumor-induced *** we discuss the potential of anti-neurogenesis and,considering the interplay between nervous and immune systems,we also focus on anti-immunosuppression-based *** molecules,antibodies and immune cells are being considered as therapeutic agents,aimed to prevent cancer cell communication with neurons and leukocytes,targeting chemotactic and neurotransmitter signaling pathways linked to perineural invasion and metastasis.

Soil-vegetation relationships in Mediterranean forests after fire

Background:Wildfires are one of the major environmental concerns in Mediterranean ***,many studies have addressed wildfire impacts on soil and vegetation in Mediterranean forests,but the linkages between these ecosystem compartments after fire are not well *** aim of this work is to analyze soil-vegetation relationships in Mediterranean burned forests as well as the consistency of these relationships among forests with different environmental conditions,at different times after fire,and among vegetation with different functional ***:Our results indicate that study site conditions play an important role in mediating soil-vegetation ***,we found that the nature of soil-vegetation relationships may vary over time as fire effects are less dominant in both ecosystem *** this,we detected several common soil-vegetation relationships among study sites and times after *** instance,our results revealed that available P content and stoichiometry(C:P and N:P)were closely linked to vegetation growth,and particularly to the growth of *** found that enzymatic activities and microbial biomass were inversely related to vegetation growth rates,whereas the specific activities of soil enzymes were higher in the areas with more vegetation height and ***,our results suggest that resprouters may influence soil properties more than seeders,the growth of seeders being more dependent on soil ***:We provide pioneer insights into how vegetation is influenced by soil,and vice-versa,in Mediterranean burned *** results reflect variability in soil-vegetation relationships among study sites and time after fire,but consistent patterns between soil properties and vegetation were also *** research is highly relevant to advance in forest science and could be useful to achieve efficient post-fire management.

Proteomic dynamics revealed sex-biased responses to combined heat-drought stress in Marchantia

Recent studies have documented plant responses to climate change extensively, particularly to single-stress exposures. However, critical factors for stress survival, such as sexual differentiation,are not often considered. The dioicous Marchantia polymorpha stands as an evolutionary milestone,potentially preserving ancestral traits from the early colonizers. In this study, we employed proteomic analyses complemented with physiological monitoring to investigate combined heat and drought responses in Tak-1(male) and Tak-2(female)accessions of this liverwort. Additionally, targeted transcriptomics was conducted using different natural populations from contrasting *** findings revealed sex-biased dynamics among natural accessions, particularly evident under control conditions and during early stress responses. Although Tak-2 exhibited greater diversity than Tak-1 under control conditions, male accession demonstrated distinct and more rapid stress sensing and signaling. These differences in stress response appeared to be strongly related to sex-specific plasticity influenced by geoclimatic origin. Furthermore, we established distinct protein gene ages and genomic distribution trends, underscoring the importance of protein diversification over time. This study provides an evolutionary perspective on sexual divergence and stress emergence employing a systems biology approach, which allowed for the establishment of global and sex-specific interaction networks in the stress response.

Study of corneal biomechanical properties in patients with childhood glaucoma

AIM:To study of corneal biomechanical properties and intraocular pressure(IOP)measured with Corvis Scheimpflug Technology(ST)in patients with childhood glaucoma(CG).METHODS:Cross-sectional study in which 89 eyes were included 56 of them with *** one eye per patient was *** following variables were obtained from the clinical history and the ophthalmological examination:age,sex,IOP,number of surgeries,and the cup/disc ratio(CDR).The following parameters were recorded using Corvis ST:corrected by biomechanics IOP(b IOP),not corrected IOP(nct IOP),central corneal thickness(CCT),maximum concavity[radius,peak distance(PD)and deformation amplitude],applanation 1 and 2(length and velocity).The mean age was 23±14.55 and 33±19.5 years old for the control group and CG group,*** 36 were males and 53 were *** the CG group,7 patients were controlled only with medical *** had at least one previous goniotomy,19 had at least one trabeculectomy,and 11 had an Ahmed ***:A significant and positive intraclass correlation coefficient was found between Goldman IOP and the IOP measured by Corvis in both *** differences were found between the IOP measured with Corvis and Goldman using a student *** biomechanical parameters,there were differences in the applanation length 2(A-L2),in the applanation velocity 2(A-V2)and in the *** sex,only the applanation length 1(A-L1)was found to be different in control group.A positive and significant Pearson correlation was found between CDR and the ***:Corneal biomechanical properties have shown differences between CG and healthy subjects and also between men and women.

Impact of common gastrointestinal disorders in elderly on in vitro meat protein digestibility and related properties

This study aimed to in vitro evaluate the impact of common gastrointestinal(GI)alterations appearing with aging on protein digestibility,and functional related properties,in four different meats(chicken,turkey,pork and beef).Thus,three elderly digestion models were stated as long as altered GI conditions affected at oral(E1),oral and gastric(E2)and oral,gastric and intestinal stages(E3).Healthy adult GI conditions were also mimicked as standard control model(C).A notable trichloroacetic acid(TCA)soluble protein and the free amino acids(FAA)release reduction(p<0.05)were found under intestinal suboptimal conditions(E3),being more accused in beef than in other ***,chicken intake would be more advisable,than other meats,in terms of protein digestibility;while beef would provide a greater net supply of FAA under E3 model *** altered conditions,seem to favor protein ***,while gastric and intestinal suboptimal conditions diminish the angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE)inhibition of meat digesta,their antioxidant activity was only negatively affected by intestinal altered conditions.

In the recent decades,zinc(Zn)and its alloys have been drawing attention as promising candidates for bioresorbable cardiovascular stents due to its degradation rate more suitable than magnesium(Mg)and iron(Fe)***,its mechanical properties need to be improved in order to meet the criteria for vascular *** work investigates the mechanical properties,biodegradability and biocompatibility of Zn-Mg and Zn-Cu alloys in order to determine a proper alloy composition for optimal stent *** measurements are performed to characterize the mechanical properties at the nanoscale as a function of the Zn microstructure variations induced by *** biodegradation mechanisms are discussed and correlated to microstructure,mechanical performance and bacterial/cell *** of Mg or Cu alloying elements refined the microstructure of Zn and enhanced yield strength(YS)and ultimate tensile strength(UTS)proportional to the volume fraction of secondary ***-1Mg showed the higher YS and UTS and better performance in terms of degradation stability in Hanks’***-Cu alloys presented an antibacterial effect for *** controlled by diffusion mechanisms and by *** was dependent on the degradation rate and the nature of the corrosion products.

Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin(BCG) instillation has been adopted for the treatment of patients with superficial bladder cancer. Severe adverse events due to local instillation of BCG are uncommon, with an overall rate of serious complications of less than 5%. We report the case of an immunocompetent adult patient with multi-system effects, namely pneumonitis, granulomatous hepatitis and meningitis, who responded well to standard treatment for Mycobacterium bovis. This case highlights the importance of a thorough assessment of this type of patient.

Background Alzheimer’s disease(AD)is a progressive multifaceted neurodegenerative disorder for which no disease-modifying treatment *** is central to the pathology progression,with evidence suggesting that microglia-released galectin-3(gal3)plays a pivotal role by amplifying neuroinflammation in ***,the possible involvement of gal3 in the disruption of neuronal network oscillations typical of AD remains *** Here,we investigated the functional implications of gal3 signaling on experimentally induced gamma oscillations ex vivo(20-80 Hz)by performing electrophysiological recordings in the hippocampal CA3 area of wild-type(WT)mice and of the 5×FAD mouse model of *** addition,the recorded slices from WT mice under acute gal3 application were analyzed with RT-qPCR to detect expression of some neuroinflammation-related genes,and amyloid-β(Aβ)plaque load was quantified by immunostaining in the CA3 area of 6-month-old 5×FAD mice with or without Gal3 knockout(KO).Results Gal3 application decreased gamma oscillation power and rhythmicity in an activity-dependent manner,which was accompanied by impairment of cellular dynamics in fast-spiking interneurons(FSNs)and pyramidal *** found that the gal3-induced disruption was mediated by the gal3 carbohydrate-recognition domain and prevented by the gal3 inhibitor TD139,which also prevented Aβ42-induced degradation of gamma ***-more,the 5×FAD mice lacking gal3(5×FAD-Gal3KO)exhibited WT-like gamma network dynamics and decreased Aβplaque *** We report for the first time that gal3 impairs neuronal network dynamics by spike-phase uncoupling of FSNs,inducing a network performance ***,our findings suggest gal3 inhibition as a potential therapeutic strategy to counteract the neuronal network instability typical of AD and other neurological disorders encompassing neuroinflammation and cognitive decline.
