BACKGROUND The impact of platelets on liver transplantation(LT) is well recognized, but not completely understood. Platelets exert dichotomous effects on the graft and on the patient. On the one hand, they are essential for primary hemostasis and tissue repair and regeneration. On the other hand, they support ischemia/reperfusion injury and inflammatory processes. Recent evidence has shown a new role for platelet count(PC) in predicting outcomes after *** To evaluate if low PC is a predictor of short-and long-term outcomes after *** Four hundred and eighty consecutive LT patients were retrospectively *** from the preoperative to the seventh postoperative day(POD) were considered. C-statistic analysis defined the ideal cutoff point for PC. Cox regression was performed to check whether low PC was a predictor of death,retransplantation or primary changes in graft function within one year after *** The highest median PC was 86 × 109/L [interquartile range(IQR) = 65–100 ×109/L] on seventh POD, and the lowest was 51 × 109/L(IQR = 38–71 × 109/L) on third POD. The C-statistic defined a PC < 70 × 109/L on fifth POD as the ideal cutoff point for predicting death and retransplantation. In the multivariate analysis, platelets < 70 × 109/L on 5 POD was an independent risk factor for death at 12 mo after LT [hazard ratio(HR) = 2.01; 95% confidence interval(CI) 1.06-3.79;P = 0.031]. In the Cox regression, patients with PC < 70 × 109/L on 5 POD had worse graft survival rates up to one year after LT(HR = 2.76; 95%CI 1.52-4.99; P =0.001).CONCLUSION PC < 70 × 109/L on 5 POD is an independent predictor of death in the first year after LT. These results are in agreement with other studies that indicate that low PC after LT is associated with negative outcomes.

Milk Yield of Holstein Cows Induced into Lactation Twice Consecutively and Lactation Curve Models Fitted to Artificial Lactations

Nineteen multiparous barren Holstein cows were subjected to an induction of lactation protocol for 21 d administering estradiol cypionate （2 mg kg-1 of body weight （BW） d-1, on day 1 to 14）, progesterone （0.10 mg kg-1 of BW, on day 1 to 7）, lfumethasone （0.03 mg kg-1 of BW, on day 18 to 20） and recombinant bovine somatotropin （rbST;500 mg per cow, on day 1, 6, 16 and 21）. At the end of lactation and with a minimum of a 2-mon dry period, the same cows were again hormonally induced into lactation. Cows in both lactations were not artiifcially inseminated, they were milked 3 times daily and received rbST throughout lactation. Mean accumulated milk yield at 305 d in milk （DIM） did not differ between the ifrst and second induced lactations （（9 710 ＆#177;1 728） vs. （9 309＆#177;2 150） kg;mean＆#177;SD）. Total milk yield （（12 707＆#177;3 406） vs. （12 306＆#177;4 218） kg;mean＆#177;SD） and lactation length （（405＆#177;100） vs. （410＆#177;91） d;mean＆#177;SD） were not different between the ifrst and second induced lactations. In a second study, 15 empirical models including exponential, power law, yield-density, sigmoidal and miscellaneous models were compared for their suitability by modeling 12-mon （n=334）, 18-mon （n=164） and 29-mon （n=22） lactation cycles of Holsteins cows induced into lactation and treated with rbST throughout the lactation. Hoerl （Y=ab1/xxc）, Wood （Y=axb exp（cx）） and Dhanoa （Y=ax（bc）exp（cx）） models were equally suitable to describe 12-mon lactations. An exponential model with ifve parameters （Y=exp（a＋bx＋cd2＋e/x）） showed the best ift for milk yield for 18-mon lactations. The rational model （Y=a＋bx/1＋cx＋dx2） was found to produce the closest ift for 29-mon lactations. It was concluded that, with the protocol used in the present study, multiparous cows respond favorably to a second cycle of induced lactation, with milk yield similar to that experienced during the ifrst cycle. AIM To determine the genetic predisposition to celiacdisease(Ce D) in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) patients by quantifying the frequency of Ce D-related human leucocyte antigen(HLA)(HLA-Ce D: HLA-DQ2 and-DQ8) in IBD patients globally, by type of IBD and gender, and by calculating the protective/risk contribution of these haplotypes in the development of the IBD *** We conducted a prospective study with IBD patients from our Unit. Clinical information was gathered and blood was tested for HLA-CeD. The control group was made up of unrelated Valencian organ ***1034 subjects were analyzed: 457 IBD [207 ulcerative coliti(UC) and 250 Crohn's disease(CD)] patients and 577 healthy controls. 39% of the controls and 34% of the patients had HLA-Ce D(P = 0.0852). HLA-DQ2 was less frequent in UC patients(P = 0.0287), and HLA-DQ8 in CD(P = 0.0217). In women with UC, the frequency of DQ2.5 cis(DQB1*02:01-DQA1*05:01) was reduced ≥ 50% [P = 0.0344; preventive fraction(PF) = 13%]. PFs(7%-14%) were obtained with all HLACe D haplotypes. HLA DQB1*02:02-DQA1*02:01(HLADQ2.2) was more frequent in CD patients with respect to controls(P = 0.001) and UC patients(etiological fraction = 15%).CONCLUSION HLA-CeD is not more frequent in IBD patients, with an even lower frequency of HLA-DQ2 and-DQ8 in UC and CD respectively. HLA-DQ2.5 confers protection from the development of UC, especially in women, and HLADQ8 does so for the appearance of CD. HLA-DQ2.2 is present in 34% of the CD patients and may constitute a genetic risk factor for CD development.

PCA （principal component analysis）, CCA （canonical correlation analysis） and PLSR （partial least squares regression） are powerful water quality modeling methods that provide better results than other classical ones such as multiple lineal regression. In this work they were used to model four water quality parameters at the Amadorio Reservoir （Alicante, Spain）, namely： water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and conductivity. The main purpose of this study was to predict the future quality of the water and, thus improve its management. Raw data correspond to daily values of mean wind speed, mean wind direction, maximum wind speed, mean, minimum and maximum air temperature, number of hours below 7 ~C, relative humidity, global solar radiation, total precipitation, evapotranspiration, exploitation volume, inflow, outflow, filtration, depth and Julian day. Two years were considered （2004-2005） to get the calibration （186 days, 4,401 registrations） and validation （185 days, 4,573 registrations） datasets. Models were developed using either all the variables or a reduced subset; furthermore, PLSR yielded the best results.

Objective To determine whether topical applications of thiosulfinate-enriched Allium sativum extract(TASE)can accelerate acute cutaneous wound healing(WH)in a murine *** Keratinocyte viability and in vitro wound closure were assessed in keratinocyte *** of topical TASE(0.5μg/mL of allicin in 97%ethanol)on acute cutaneous WH were determined in a murine model of acute cutaneous *** mice were alternately assigned to the vehicle-and TASE-treated groups(n=6 per group).Expression levels of mRNA for keratinocyte differentiation marker-related proteins(filaggrin,loricrin and involucrin)and lipid synthetic enzymes(elongation of very long chain fatty acids protein 4(ELOVL4),fatty acid synthase(FA2H),3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase(HMGCoA),and serine palmitoyltransferase(SPT))were assessed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction on day 3 and 8 after wounding,while transepidermal water loss(TEWL)rates were measured in wounded *** TASE accelerated WH both in vivo(40%vs.22%reduction in wound area,P<0.01)and in vitro(90%vs.65%reduction in wound area,P<0.01).Moreover,topical applications of TASE upregulated the expression levels of epidermal mRNA for ELOVL4,HMGCoA,SPT,filaggrin,loricrin and involucrin(P<0.05 ***-treated controls)on day 3 after ***,TASE significantly lowered TEWL rates in comparison with vehicle alone on day 8(33.06±2.09 g/(m^2·h)vs.24.60±2.04 g/(m^2·h),P<0.01).Conclusions Topical applications of TASE stimulated keratinocyte proliferation and formation of epidermal permeability barrier function,leading to acceleration of acute cutaneous *** products containing TASE could be used to manage acute cutaneous WH.
