Hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties of marine halophyte Luminetzera racemosa bark extract in CCL_4 induced hepatotoxicity

Objective:To identify the hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of Luminetzera racemosa （L racemosa）bark ***:Wistar albino rats were divided into 6 groups:Group 1 served as control;Group 2 served as hepatotoxin（CCL4 treated） group;Group 3 served as positive control（Silymarin） treated groups;Group 4,5 and 6 served as（100,200 and 300 mg/kg bw p.o.） L racemosa bark extract treated ***,in vitro antioxidant indexes,including DppH, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity（HRSA）,NO,ferric reducing antioxidant power（FRAp）,lipid hydroperoxide（LpO） and super oxide dismutase（SOD） were also analyzed in the bark extract. Results:The results suggested that,the level of serum glutamate oxyloacetic transaminase（SCOT）, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase（SGpT）,alkaline phosphatise（ALp）,bilurubin,cholesterol, sugar and lactate dehydrogenase（LDH） were significantly（ppatotoxin treated rats when compared with the control ***,the maximum reduction of SGOT[（225.36±13.65） IU/L],SGpT[（96.85±17.36） IU/L],ALp[（315.37±17.16） IU/L],bilirubin[（2.97±0.46） mg/dL], cholesterol[（163.73±17.54） mg/dL],sugar[（127.35±27.35） mg/dL]and LDH[（1 784.00±268.36） IU/L] were observed with 300 mg/kg bw of bark extract treated *** scores showed that,no visible changes were observed with high dose（300 mg/kg bw） of bark extract treated rats except mild fatty *** in vitro antioxidant assays showed that,the IC50 values were observed as（44.17±6.87）μ/mL,（42.45±2.81）μg/mL,（62.37±3.98）μg/mL,（54.24±3.09）μg/mL, （87.25±5.90）μg/mL and（71.54±5.42）μg/mL for ***,NO,FRAp,LpO and SOD radical scavenging activities,***:The hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities of the bark extract might be to the presence of unique chemical classes such as flavonoids, alkaloids and polyphenols.

In vitro antiplasmodial effect of ethanolic extracts of traditional medicinal plant Ocimum species against plasmodium falciparum

Objective:To identify the possible antiplasmodial compounds from leaf,stem,root and flower extracts of Ocimum canum(***),Ocimum sanctum(***) and Ocimum basilicum (***).Methods:The ***,*** and *** were collected from Ramanalhapuram District,Tamil Nadu and the extraction was carried out in *** filter sterilized extracts(100,30,23,12.5,6.23 and 3.125μg/mL) of leaf,stem,root and flower extracts of ***,*** and *** were tested for antiplasmodial activity against plasmodium falciparum(***).The potential extracts were also tested for their phytochemical ***:The leaf extract of *** showed excellent antiplasmodial activity(IC_(50) 3538μg/mL) followed by leaf extract of ***(IC_(50) 4341μg/mL). The leaf extract of ***,root extracts of *** and ***,the stem and flower extracts of all the three tested Ocimum species showed IC_(50) values between 50 and 100μg/mL Statistical analysis reveals that,significant antiplasmodial activity(pphological changes in erythrocytes by the ethanolic extract of ***,*** and *** in vitro antiplasmodial activity might be due to the presence of alkaloids,glycosides,flavonoids,phenols,saponins,triterpenoids,proteins,resins, steroids and tannins in the ethanolic extracts of tested ***:The ethanolic leaf extracts of *** possess lead compounds for the development of antiplasmodial drugs.

Experimental investigation of gaseous solvent huff-n-puff in the Middle Bakken Formation

The efficacy of gaseous solvents in enhancing oil recovery(EOR)in unconventional reservoirs and the influence of operational and design parameters are still debated among the oil recovery research *** work investigated the recovery-enhancing capabilities of two potent gaseous solvents,CO_(2) and ethane,in tight core *** huff-n-puff(H-n-p)experiments were conducted under three miscibility conditions to investigate the influence of the key operating parameters and the dependency of their impact on the miscibility conditions and gas *** results show that oil recovery increased with increasing pressure from below(BM)to above(AM)miscibility pressure in a non-linear trend,irrespective of the gas ***,the influence of the soak period was noticeably dependent on the miscibility condition,specifically more remarkable under AM conditions and less apparent under BM ***,the effect of the production period was more pronounced at AM conditions for both ***,the impact of rock surface area-to-volume(SA/V)was only observed at BM,where both gases recovered more oil in the core samples with high SA/*** general,ethane showed a higher efficacy for oil recovery than CO_(2);CO_(2) recovered 21%–70%of oil in small core samples,while ethane could recover 32%–88%.The highest recovery was achieved with ethane injected under AM conditions,with a prolonged soak time,a short production period and into a core sample with a high SA/*** believe the findings from this work will help better understand and design H-n-p EOR projects.

Disagreement between symptom-reflux association analysis parameters in pediatric gastroesophageal reflux disease investigation

AIM: To assess the agreement within 3 commonly used symptom-reflux association analysis (SAA) parameters investigating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in infants. METHODS: Twenty three infants with suspected GERD were included in this study. Symptom index (SI), Symptom sensitivity index (SSI) and symptom association probability (SAp) related to cough and irritability were calculated after 24 h combined pH/multiple intraluminal impedance (MII) monitoring. Through defined cutoff values, SI, SSI and SAp values are differentiated in normal and abnormal, whereas abnormal values point towards gastroesophageal reflux (GER) as the origin of symptoms. We analyzed the correlation and the concordance of the diagnostic classification of these 3 SAA ***: Evaluating the GER-irritability association, SI, SSI and SAp showed non-identical classification of normal and abnormal cases in 39.2% of the infants. When irritability was taken as a symptom, there was only a poor inter-parameter association between SI and SSI, and between SI and SAp (Kendall’s tau b = 0.37, p p pectively). Evaluating the GER-cough association, SI, SSI and SAp showed non-identical classification of normal and abnormal cases in 52.2% of the patients. When cough was taken as a symptom, only SI and SSI showed a poor inter-parameter association (Kendall’s tau b = 0.33, p pected GERD with pH/MII-monitoring, SI, SSI and SAp showed a poor inter-parameter association and important dis-agreements in diagnostic classification. These limitations must be taken into consideration when interpreting the results of SAA in infants.

Failure of p-selectin blockade alone to protect the liver from ischemia-reperfusion injury in the isolated blood-perfused rat liver

AIM： To determine if blockade of p-selectin in the isolated blood-perfused cold ex vivo rat liver model protects the liver from ischemia-reperfusion injury. METHODS： The effect of p-selectin blockade was assessed by employing an isolated blood-perfused cold ex vivo rat liver with or without p-selectin antibody treatment before and after 6 h of cold storage in University of Wisconsin solution. RESULTS： In our isolated blood-perfused rat liver model, pre-treatment with p-selectin antibody failed to protect the liver from ischemia-reperfusion injury, as judged by the elevated aspartate aminotransferase activity. In addition, p-selectin antibody treatment did not significantly reduced hepatic polymorphonuclear leukocyte accumulation after 120 min of perfusion. Histological evaluation of liver sections obtained at 120 min of perfusion showed significant oncotic necrosis in liver sections of both ischemic control and p-selectin antibody-treated groups. However, total bile production after 120 rain of perfusion was significantly greater in p-selectin antibody-treated livers, compared to control livers. No significant difference in p-selectin and ICAM-1 mRNAs and proteins, GSH, GSSG, and nuclear NF-kB was found between control and p-selectin antibody-treated livers. CONCLUSION： In conclusion, we have shown that blockade of p-selectin alone failed to reduced polymorphonuclear leukocyte accumulation in the liver and protect hepatocytes from ischemia-reperfusion injury in the isolated blood-perfused cold-ex vivo rat liver model.

The Guole biota contains common shelly fossils and some exceptionally well-preserved softbodied fossils. Stratigraphically, it is located in the mudstones and siltstones of the Sandu Formation near Guole Town, Jingxi County, Guangxi, South China. It is the first Furongian （late Cambrian） Burgess Shale-type biota found in the world, thereby filling the gap between middle Cambrian and Lower Ordovician Burgess Shale-type Lagerstaitten. preliminary studies suggest that the Guole biota includes approximately seven metazoan groups as well as algae. These will provide important new evolutionary and ecological information.

Review on the fully mulched ridge–furrow system for sustainable maize production on the semi-arid Loess plateau

The fully mulched ridge–furrow(FMRF) system has been widely used on the semi-arid Loess plateau of China due to its high maize(Zea mays L.) productivity and rainfall use efficiency. However, high outputs under this system led to a depletion of soil moisture and soil nutrients, which reduces its sustainability in the long run. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the system for the sustainable development of agriculture. The development, yield-increasing mechanisms,negative impacts, optimization, and their relations in the FMRF system are reviewed in this paper. We suggest using grain and forage maize varieties instead of regular maize;mulching plastic film in autumn or leaving the mulch after maize harvesting until the next spring, and then removing the old film and mulching new film;combining reduced/notillage with straw return;utilizing crop rotation or intercropping with winter canola(Brassica campestris L.), millet(Setaria italica), or oilseed flax(Linum usitatissimum L.);reducing nitrogen fertilizer and partially replacing chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer;using biodegradable or weather-resistant film;and implementing mechanized production. These integrations help to establish an environmentally friendly, high quality, and sustainable agricultural system, promote highquality development of dryland farming, and create new opportunities for agricultural development in the semi-arid Loess plateau.

Dpp-4 Inhibitor Linagliptin is Neuroprotective in Hyperglycemic Mice with Stroke via the AKT/mTOR pathway and Anti-apoptotic Effects

Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (Dpp-4) inhibitors have been shown to have neuroprotective effects in diabetic patients suffering from stroke, but less research has focused on patients with mild hyperglycemia below the threshold for a diagnosis of diabetes. In this investigation, a hyperglycemic mouse model was generated by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin and then subjected to focal cerebral ischemia. We demonstrated that the Dpp-4 inhibitor linagliptin significantly decreased the infarct volume, reduced neuronal cell death, decreased inflammation, and improved neurological deficit compared with control mice. Linagliptin up-regulated the expression of p-Akt and p-m TOR and regulated the apoptosis factors Bcl-2, Bax, and caspase 9. Taken together, these results suggest that linagliptin exerts a neuroprotective action likely through activation of the Akt/m TOR pathway along with anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory ***, linagliptin may be considered as a therapeutic treatment for stroke patients with mild hyperglycemia.

Unravelling the competitive effect of microstructural features on the fracture toughness and tensile properties of near beta titanium alloys

The competitive effect of microstructural features including primaryα(α_(p)),secondaryα(α_(s)),grain boundaryα(α_(GB)) and β grain size on mechanical properties of a near β Ti alloy were studied with two heat treatment *** relative effect of β grain size and STA(solution treatment and ageing)processing parameters on mechanical properties were quantitatively explored by the application of Taguchi *** results were further explained via correlating microstructure with the fracture toughness and tensile *** was found that large numbers of fine as precipitates and continuous α_(s) played greater roles than other features,resulting in a high strength and very low ductility(process *** β grain size had a negative correlation with fracture *** the samples prepared by BASCA( β anneal slow cooling and ageing)process,improved ductility and fracture toughness were obtained due to a lower density ofα;precipitates,a basket-weave structure and zigzag morphology of α_(GB).For this heat treatment,an increase in prior β grain size had an observable positive effect on fracture *** contradictory effect of β grain size on fracture toughness found in literature was for the first time *** was shown that the microstructure obtained from different processes after β solution has complex effect on mechanical *** complexity derived from the competition between microstructure features and the overall sum of their effect on fracture toughness and tensile properties.A novel table was proposed to quasi-quantitatively unravel these competitive effects.
