AIM: To analyze the effect of bipolar electrocoagula-tion and argon plasma coagulation on fresh specimens of gastrointestinal tract. METHODs: An experimental evaluation was performed at Hospital das Clinicas of the University of so Paulo, on 31 fresh surgical specimens using argon plasma coagulation and bipolar electrocoagulation at different time intervals. The depth of tissue damage was his-topathologically analyzed by single senior pathologist unaware of the coagulation method and power setting applied. To analyze the results, the mucosa was divided in superficial mucosa (epithelial layer of the esophagus and superficial portion of the glandular layer of the stomach and colon) intermediate mucosa (until thelamina propria of the esophagus and until the bottom of the glandular layer of the stomach and colon) and muscularis mucosa. Necrosis involvement of the layers was compared in several combinations of power and time interval. REsULTs: Involvement of the intermediate mucosa of the stomach and of the muscularis mucosa of the three organs was more frequent when higher amounts of en-ergy were used with argon plasma. In the esophagus and in the colon, injury of the intermediate mucosa was frequent, even when small amounts of energy were used. The use of bipolar electrocoagulation resulted in more frequent involvement of the intermediate mucosa and of the muscularis mucosa of the esophagus and of the colon when higher amounts of energy were used. In the stomach, these involvements were rare. The risk of injury of the muscularis propria was significant only in the colon when argon plasma coagulation was ***: Tissue damage after argon plasma coagulation is deeper than bipolar electrocoagulation. Both of them depend on the amount of energy used.

A 91-year-old female presented with a pulsatile abdominal mass. Her past medical history included hypertension and hyperlipidemia. A 6.9 cm infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm, with a left ectopic pelvic kidney and two aberrant renal arteries, one each from the left and right common iliac arteries was found on computed tomography. Because of the high risk of rupture, surgery was recommended and an endovascular aneurysm repair was performed. The antegrade flow of the aberrant renal artery from the left common iliac artery was preserved. The right aberrant renal artery was covered with stent graft. The patient’s serum creatinine level remained unchanged throughout the postoperative course, with an uneventful postoperative recovery.

Dear Editor,Beige adipocytes,which increase energy expenditure by dissipating energy as heat,have gained attention as a therapeutic target for combating obesity.1 Adipocytes express many types of G-protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs),each of which has a unique preference for the Gs,Gi,Gq,and G12 *** the function of Gs-coupledβ-adrenergic receptors in beige adipocyte induction is well established,2 little is known about the function of G12-coupled GPCRs beyond its suppressive roles in white adipocyte maturation.3 In this study,we generated transgenic mice conditionally expressing a G12-coupled designer GPCR using a Cre-loxP system and investigated the potential effects of G12 signaling on adipocyte biology.

shuttlecock used for badminton is light in mass so that its flight locus is strongly influenced by air. The highest launching velocity of the shuttlecock by professional badminton players exceeds speeds of over 83.3 m/s （300 km/hr）. In this study, a new badminton server machine was developed. The badminton machine can launch the shuttlecocks at wide range of speeds up to 52.8 m/s （190 km/hr） and with many shot types such as smash, clear and so on, which are easily achieved. The finite element models of a shuttlecock with feathers and the badminton machine were made, and the launching simulations of the shuttlecock were tried. The roller with a large diameter attained a higher speed of the shuttlecock than the small rollers for all kinds of launching conditions. The taper angles of the roller edge and the insert height of the shuttlecock relative to the roller surface were optimized for attaining the maximum shuttle speed by the response surface approach. After the optimization, the performance of the badminton machine had been improved about 7% as the shuttle speeds increase and the stress causing the shuttle deterioration decreased.

Purpose: The purpose was to compare the effectiveness of MDCT reconstruction methods that improve detectability for detecting the renal arteries in patients undergoing laparoscopic nephrectomy irrespective of the ability of the radiologist. Methods: 128 patients with left nephrectomy and either one or multiple renal arteries were enrolled. Radiologists with varying levels of expertise (5 board-certified and 3 non-certified) interpreted all MDCT images, including axial, VR and MIP images, independently and determined the numbers of renal arteries. The interpretation times, sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy rates were analyzed. A receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to compare the results from the various reconstruction methods. Results: At surgery, there were 156 arteries: 101 donors had one renal artery and 27 had multiple arteries. The interpretation time for board-certified radiologists was shorter than that for non-certified radiologists, and the interpretation time using MIP images was significantly shorter than that of using the other reconstruction methods. The sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy on axial images were significantly higher than those on other images. The average Az value for detection of the numbers of renal arteries using axial images was higher than that of using other images. Conclusion: MDCT is helpful in reviewing the numbers of donated renal arteries for radiologists with different levels of expertise, and different types of reconstructions.

Direct growth of graphene on insulators is expected to yield significant improvements in performance of graphene-based electronic and spintronic devices. In this study, we successfully reveal the atomic arrangement and electronic properties of a coherent heterostructure of single-layer graphene and α-Al2O3（0001）. The analysis of the atomic arrangement of single-layer graphene on α-Al2O3（0001） revealed an apparentcontradiction. The in-plane analysis shows that single-layer graphene grows not in a single-crystalline epitaxial manner, but rather in polycrystalline form, with two strongly pronounced preferred orientations. This suggests relatively weak interfacial interactions are operative. However, we demonstrate that unusually strong physical interactions between graphene and α-Al2O3（0001） exist, as evidenced by the small separation between the graphene and the α-Al2O3（0001） surface. The interfacial interaction is shown to be dominated by the electrostatic forces involved in the graphene n-system and the unsaturated electrons of the topmost O layer of α-Al2O3（0001）, rather than the van der Waals interactions. such features causes graphene hole doping and enable the graphene to slide on the α-Al2O3（0001） surface with only a small energy barrier despite the strong interfacial interactions.

AIMTo identify and characterize functionally distinct subpopulation of adipose-derived stem cells (ADsCs). METHODsADsCs cultured from mouse subcutaneous adipose tissue were sorted fluorescence-activated cell sorter based on aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity, a widely used stem cell marker. Differentiation potentials were analyzed by utilizing immunocytofluorescece and its quantitative analysis. REsULTsApproximately 15% of bulk ADsCs showed high ALDH activity in flow cytometric analysis. Although significant difference was not seen in proliferation capacity, the adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation capacity was higher in ALDHsup>Hisup> subpopulations than in ALDHsup>Losup>. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed that ribosome-related gene sets were enriched in the ALDHsup>Hisup> subpopulation. CONCLUsIONHigh ALDH activity is a useful marker for identifying functionally different subpopulations in murine ADsCs. Additionally, we suggested the importance of ribosome for differentiation of ADsCs by gene set enrichment analysis.
