Clonal propagation of Bambusa vulgaris by leafy branch cuttings

Bambusa vulgaris schrad ex wendl is a widely cultivated bamboo species in rural Bangladesh for its versatile uses. The vegetative propagation becomes the only viable alternative for this species because B. vulgaris does not set seed after sparse flowering, which makes seedling progenies unavailable. A low-cost propagation trial was conducted to explore the clonal propagation techniques for the species with two types of small branch cuttings, nodal leafy cuttings and tip cuttings. The cuttings, after treating with 0, 0.1%, 0.4%, and 0.8% IBA solutions, were kept in non-mist propagator to let them to root for assessing the rooting ability. The cuttings were rooted in four weeks and were allowed to grow in the polybags for 10 months under nursery condition to assess their steckling capacity. The study reveals that both types of branch cuttings are able to develop roots, shoots, to survive and to form rhizome under the nursery condition. Rooting ability of the cuttings was significantly enhanced by the application of rooting hormone - IBA. The highest rooting percentage in nodal leafy cuttings and the tip cuttings （56.67% and 51.0%, respectively） were observed in 0.8% IBA treatment, followed by 0.4% IBA and the lowest （34.3% and 30.0%, respectively） was in control. The highest number of root developed per cutting （9.77 and 8.33 in nodal leafy cuttings and the tip cuttings, respectively） was also obtained from the cuttings treated with 0.8% IBA solution, followed 0.4% IBA treatment and the lowest （3.1 and 2.1, respectively） was in the cuttings without treatment. However, the length of the longest root varied significantly neither with the cutting types nor the concentrations of IBA solution. survival percentage of the stecklings in nursery condition was significantly enhanced by IBA.

Prediction of Turbulent Flow structure in a Fully Developed Rib-Roughened Narrow Rectangular Channel

Fully developed turbulent water-flow structure over one-side repeated-ribs in narrow two-dimensional rectangular channels was investigated experimentally by Particle Image Velocimetry （PIV） and analytically by the standard k-ε and nonlinear k-ε turbulent models. Two rib-pitch to height ratios （p/k） of 10 and 20 were investigated while the rib height was held constant at 4 mm. The rib height-to-channel equivalent diameter ratio （k/De） was 0.1. The streamwise mean velocity and turbulent kinetic energy distributions at six selected axial stations from the center rib for the two Reynolds number （Re） of 7,000 and 20,000 were obtained and compared with the predicted one. The performance ability in predicting separating and reattaching turbulent water-flow between the standard K-ε and nonlinear k-ε models had yielded no clear conclusion. A large-scale turbulent eddy was generated by the rib promoter and then propagated into the mainstream flow, which led to the deformation of the velocity profile. The turbulent kinetic energy was increased about two times higher at p/k = 20 than that at p/k =10 under the two Reynolds numbers. The effect of the p/k value and the Reynolds number （Re） on reattachment length （XR） was investigated and showed that the p/k and Re had no significant effect on the reattachment length beyond a critical value of Re = 15,000 where XR was found to be approximately 4 times of the rib height under water-flow condition.

Development and Performance study of Controlled Atmosphere for Fresh Tomato

Development of a controlled atmosphere (CA) plant and shelf-life of fresh tomatoes at different storage conditions were studied in this research. The controlled chamber (4.5' × 4.5' × 4.5') with supplement of 1% L-ascorbic acid as antioxidant source was constructed using locally available materials. Fresh tomatoes were kept with wrapping by low density polyethylene under refrigerated and CA storage conditions. The maximum shelf-life of fresh tomato was 42 days under CA condition and followed by 35 days in refrigeration condition. Though initial cost of controlled atmosphere was high but it resulted in maximum shelf life of tomato. However, CA condition retained the physiological changes namely, color change, Tss, and weight loss of fresh tomatoes than that of stored in refrigerated condition. From nutritional point of view, it was concluded that developed CA plant could be used to extend the shelf-life of fresh tomatoes with minimum physico-chemical changes throughout the storage period.

Horizontal directional drilling(HDD)is a widely used trenchless method for underground utility *** associated ground settlement triggered by HDD depends on the size,types,and surface texture of pipe,diameter of borehole,and soil *** pre-sent study investigates the surface settlement due to the construction of a 1067 mm diameter HDD,which will replace an existing sewer siphon under the sR-60 highway in Chino,California using empirical,and numerical *** on the results obtained from the subsurface investigation,an empirical analysis was conducted *** by numerical modeling of the HDD using PLAXIs 2D soft-ware.A careful comparison between two different methods indicated closer values of surface settlement between the empirical method(7.3 mm)and the numerical modeling(4.6 mm).In addition,the shape of surface settlement and horizontal settlement curves for the empirical and numerical methods was found to be *** minor discrepancy between the two methods resulted as the numerical model can host several soil layers whereas the empirical equation can use only one type of ***,a parametric study was conducted to evaluate the effect of borehole cover depth,size,and soil parameters on surface *** was observed that soil strength param-eters yielded a greater effect on surface movement,whereas modulus of elasticity has a relatively smaller influence with zero contribution from Poisson’s ratio.

Biomass and carbon stock in a forested areas are now prime important indicators of forest management and climate change mitigation measures. But the accurate estimation of biomass and carbon in trees of forests is now a challenging issue. In most cases, pantropical and regional biomass models are used frequently to estimate biomass and carbon stock in trees, but these estimationspan>span>sspan>span> have some uncertainty compared to the species-specific allometric biomass model. Acacia nilotica, Casuarina equisetifoliaspan> and Melia azedarach have been planted in different areas of Bangladesh considering the species-specific site requirements. While Barringtonia acutangula and Pongamia pinnata span style="font-family:Verdana;">are the dominant tree species of the freshwater swamp forest of Bangladesh. Biomathematical model for gyrotactic free-forced bioconvection with oxygen diffusion in near-wall transport within a porous medium fuel cell

Bioconvection has shown significant promise for environmentally friendly,sustainable“green”fuel cell *** improved design of such systems requires continuous refinements in biomatheatical modeling in conjunction with laboratory and *** by exploring deeper the near-wall transport phenomena involved inbio-inspired fuel cells,in the present paper,we examine analytically and numericallythe combined free-forced convective steady boundary layer flow from a solid verticalflat plate embedded in a Darcian porous medium containing gyrotactic *** is one of the many taxes exhibited in biological microscale transport,andother examples include magneto-taxis,photo-taxis,chemotaxis and geo-taxis (reflecting the response of microorganisms to magnetic field,light,chemical concentration orgravity,respectively). The bioconvection fuel cell also contains difusing oxygen specicswhich mimics the cathodic behavior in a proton exchange membrane(PEm) *** wall is maintained at isosolutal (constant oxygen volume fraction and motilemicroorganism density) and iso-thermal conditions. Wall values of these quantities aresustained at higher values than the ambient temperature and concentration of oxygenand biological microorganism *** transformations are applied to renderthe governing partial differential equations for mass,momentum,energy,oxygen speciesand microorganism species density into a system of ordinary differential equations.
