The Three-step Workflow:A Pragmatic Approach to Allocating Academic Hospitals' Affiliations for Bibliometric Purposes

Purpose:A key question when ranking universities is whether or not to allocate the publication output of affiliated hospitals to *** paper presents a method for classifying the varying degrees of interdependency between academic hospitals and universities in the context of the Leiden ***/methodology/approach:Hospital nomenclatures vary worldwide to denote some form of collaboration with a university,however they do not correspond to universally standard ***,rather than seeking a normative definition of academic hospitals,we propose a three-step workflow that aligns the university-hospital relationship with one of three general models:full integration of the hospital and the medical faculty into a single organization;health science centres in which hospitals and medical faculty remain separate entities albeit within the same governance structure;and structures in which universities and hospitals are separate entities which collaborate with one *** classification system provides a standard through which publications which mention affiliations with academic hospitals can be better ***:In the paper we illustrate how the three-step workflow effectively translates the three above-mentioned models into two types of instrumental relationships for the assignation of publications:"associate"and"component".When a hospital and a medical faculty are fully integrated or when a hospital is part of a health science centre,the relationship is classified as *** a hospital follows the model of collaboration and support,the relationship is classified as *** compilation of data following these standards allows for a more uniform comparison between worldwide educational and re search *** limitations:The workflow is resource intensive,depends heavily on the information provided by universities and hospitals,and is more challenging for languages that use nonLatin ***,the applicati

Context-dependent insect predation pressure on an avian ectoparasite

Context dependence arises when ecological relationships vary with the conditions under which they are observed. Context dependence of interactions involving parasites is poorly known, even if it is key to understanding host–parasite relationships and food web dynamics. This paper investigates to which extent predation pressure on an avian ectoparasite (Carnus hemapterus) is context-dependent. Based on a predator-exclusion experiment, predation pressure on C. hemapterus pupae in the host's nest for 3 years, and its variation between habitat types are quantified. Variation in precipitation and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is also explored as a likely cause of context dependency. We hypothesize that predation pressure should fluctuate with such surrogates of food availability, so that inter-annual and intra-annual differences may emerge. The number of nests with significant reduction of pupae varied widely among years ranging from 24% to 75%. However, average pupae reduction in nests where a significant reduction occurred did not vary between years. No differences in predation rates between habitat types were detected. Precipitation and NDVI varied widely between years and NDVI was consistently lower around nests on cliffs than around nests on trees and farmhouses. Parallels were found between variation in predation pressure and precipitation/NDVI at a wide scale (highest predation the driest year, and much lower the 2 rainier ones), but not at the nest scale. This paper shows clear context-dependent insect predation pressure on an ectoparasite under natural conditions, and that such interaction changes in signs rather than magnitude between years. The causes for these variations require longer-term studies and/or well-designed, large-scale experiments.

The aim of this paper is to investigate different radicals(Wedderburn radical,lower nil radical,Levitzky radical,upper nil radical,the set of all nilpotent elements,the sum of all nil left ideals)of the noncommutative rings known as skew Poincare–Birkhoff–Witt *** characterize minimal prime ideals of these rings and prove that the Kothe’s conjecture holds for these ***,we establish the transfer of several ring-theoretical properties(reduced,symmetric,reversible,2-primal)from the coefficients ring of a skew PBW extension to the extension itself.

Rheumatic manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease

This article reviews the literature concerning rheu-matic manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD),including common immune-mediated pathways,frequency,clinical course and therapy. Musculoskel-etal complications are frequent and well-recognized manifestations in IBD,and affect up to 33% of pa-tients with IBD. The strong link between the bowel and the osteo-articular system is suggested by many clinical and experimental observations,notably in HLA-B27 transgenic rats. The autoimmune pathogenic mechanisms shared by IBD and spondyloarthropathies include genetic susceptibility to abnormal antigen pre-sentation,aberrant recognition of self,the presence of autoantibodies against specific antigens shared by the colon and other extra-colonic tissues,and increased intestinal permeability. The response against microor-ganisms may have an important role through molecular mimicry and other mechanisms. Rheumatic mani-festations of IBD have been divided into peripheral arthritis,and axial involvement,including sacroiliitis,with or without spondylitis,similar to idiopathic anky-losing spondylitis. Other periarticular features can oc-cur,including enthesopathy,tendonitis,clubbing,peri-ostitis,and granulomatous lesions of joints and *** and osteomalacia secondary to IBD and iatrogenic complications can also occur. The manage-ment of the rheumatic manifestations of IBD consists of physical therapy in combination with local injection of corticosteroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; caution is in order however,because of their possible harmful effects on intestinal integrity,perme-ability,and even on gut inflammation. sulfasalazine,methotrexate,azathioprine,cyclosporine and lefluno-mide should be used for selected indications. In some cases,tumor necrosis factor-α blocking agents should be considered as first-line therapy.

A test method for evaluating the thermal environment of underground coal mine refuge alternatives

since 2009,the Mine safety and Health Administration(MsHA)has required mines to install refuge alternatives(RAs)in underground coal *** of the biggest concerns with occupied RAs is the possible severity of the resulting thermal *** 30 CFR 7.504,the maximum allowable apparent temperature(AT)for an occupied RA is specified as 35℃(95°F).Manufacturers must conduct heat/humidity tests to demonstrate that their RAs meet the 35℃(95°F)AT *** these tests,heat input devices are used to input the metabolic heat of actual miners.A wide variety of test methods,sensors,and heat input devices could be used when conducting such *** 2012,the National Institute for Occupational safety and Health(NIOsH)has conducted over thirty 96-hour heat/humidity tests on four different *** paper discusses the test equipment and procedures used during these *** information is useful for RA manufacturers conducting RA heat/humidity tests,for other researchers investigating RA heat/humidity buildup,and for those who need to assess the thermal environment of any confined space where people may be trapped or are seeking refuge.

The Beauty of Being a Variant： H2A.Z and the sWR1 Complex in Plants

Numerous studies have shown that the nucleosome is a dynamic structure that strongly influences gene expression. Dynamism concerns different nucleosomal characteristics, including position, posttranslational modifications, and histone composition. Thus, within the nucleosome, canonical histones can be exchanged by histone variant proteins with specific functions--a process known as ‘histone replacement＇. The histone variant H2A.Z has an important function in transcription and, during the last few years, its role in plant development and immune response has become evident. Compiling genetic and biochemical studies from several laboratories has revealed that plants contain a multiprotein complex, similar to the sWR1/sRCAP complex from yeast and animals, involved in H2A.Z deposition. Despite intense research in different organisms, the mechanism by which H2A.Z influences transcription is still unknown. However, recent results from Arabidopsis have shown a strong inverse correlation between H2A.Z and DNA methylation, suggesting that H2A.Z might protect genes from silencing.

The longitudinal profile of a river channel can be described in function of mathematical expressions. The logarithmic fit is the most used method to describe the relative equilibrium of a channel elevation profile. Rivers showing zones of high channel gradient and convex-upward profiles can be evaluated in function of the offset distance with respect to the logarithmic curve. The Jama River profile has been constructed using differential GPs data for the downstream reach and 4-m-grid DEM data base for the remaining headward profile. The resulting longitudinal profile shows a prominent knickpoint of about 80 m in elevation characterized by sharp local convexity. The offset distance in vertical direction from the logarithmic plot is interpreted as the successive accumulation of multiple uplift episodes associated with the Jama Fault system activity. The horizontal offset is suggested to represent the remaining retreated distance for the upstream propagation of the Jama knickpoint. The highly resistant Cretaceous rocks outcropping along the Jama knickpoint reach acts as an inflection point between two subprofiles that show well-fitted logarithmic curves, thereby representing a temporary partitioned equilibrium along the Jama River profile.

A comparison of process performance during the anaerobic mono-and co-digestion of slaughterhouse waste through different operational modes

The use of consecutive feeding was applied to investigate the response of the microbial biomass to a second addition of substrates in terms of biodegradation using batch tests as a promising alternative to predict the behavior of the process. Anaerobic digestion（AD） of the slaughterhouse waste（sB） and its co-digestion with manure（M）, various crops（VC）, and municipal solid waste were evaluated. The results were then correlated to previous findings obtained by the authors for similar mixtures in batch and semi-continuous operation modes. AD of the sB failed showing total inhibition after a second feeding. Co-digestion of the sB ＋ M showed a significant improvement for all of the response variables investigated after the second feeding, while co-digestion of the sB ＋ VC resulted in a decline in all of these response variables. similar patterns were previously detected, during both the batch and the semi-continuous modes.
