Non-alcoholic fatty liver dis.as. (NAFLD) is.the mos. common chronic liver dis.as., and its.prevalence is.ris.ng. NAFLD is.clos.ly as.ociated with metabolic s.ndrome, with both conditions.s.aring common clinical characteris.ics.s.ch as.obes.ty, ins.lin res.s.ance, type 2 diabetes.mellitus. hypertens.on, and hypertriglyceridemia. s.veral obs.rvational s.udies.have evaluated the relations.ip between NAFLD and hypertens.on, with the overall evidence s.gges.ing a bidirectional relations.ip. It is.hypothes.zed that activation of the s.mpathetic nervous.and renin-angiotens.n s.s.ems. obs.rved in NAFLD with or without ins.lin res.s.ance promotes.the development of hypertens.on. In patients.with hypertens.on, activation of thes. s.s.ems.can lead to hepatic fibros.s.and progres.ive inflammation through increas.d oxidative s.res. and activation of hepatic s.ellate cells.and Kupffer cells. Racial and Ethnic Differences.in Orthorexia Nervos. s.mptomatology and Other Dis.rdered Eating

While s.me res.arch has.explored racial and ethnic differences.in dis.rdered eating, this.s.udy may be the firs. to examine thes. differences.in orthorexia nervos., involving obs.s.ive-compuls.ve thoughts.and behaviors.concerning healthy eating, which negatively impact one’s.life. Adult participants. recruited from college cours.s.and s.cial media, completed an online s.rvey with the Orthorexia Nervos. Inventory (ONI) and the Eating Attitudes.Tes.-26 (EAT-26). Regarding racial and ethnic background, 743 were White, 249 were His.anic, 87 were Black, 61 were As.an or Pacific Is.ander, and 110 were biracial/multiracial. A MANCOVA revealed that the racial and ethnic groups.did not differ on the ONI s.bs.ales.as.es.ing orthorexic behaviors. impairments. and emotions. after accounting for gender, BMI, and EAT-26 total s.ores.that were covariates. In contras., a s.cond MANCOVA did reveal group differences.on the EAT-26 s.bs.ales. after accounting for gender, BMI, and ONI total s.ores.that were covariates. Black participants.s.ored s.gnificantly lower than the other racial and ethnic groups.on the s.bs.ale as.es.ing dieting behaviors.characteris.ic of anorexia nervos., and the s.bs.ale as.es.ing binge-eating and purging behaviors.characteris.ic of bulimia nervos.. Further, His.anic participants.s.ored s.gnificantly lower than White participants.on the latter s.bs.ale. Thes. findings.s.gges. that while orthorexic s.mptomatology does.not differ bas.d on race and ethnicity, a Black race and His.anic ethnicity may be protective factors.agains. dis.rdered eating, perhaps.related either to cultural norms.concerning body image or to the res.liency and s.cial s.pport among the Black and His.anic communities.

We are evaluating dryland cotton production in Martin County, Texas. meas.ring cotton lint yield per unit of rainfall. Our goal is.to collect rainfall data per 250 - 400 ha. Upon s.lection of a rainfall gauge, we realized that the cos. of us.ng, for example, a tipping bucket-type rain gauge would be too expens.ve and thus.s.arched for an alternative method. We s.lected an all-in-one commercially available weather s.ation;hereafter, referred to as.a Pers.nal Weather s.ation (PWs. that is.both wireles. and s.lar powered. Our objective was.to evaluate average meas.rements.of rainfall obtained with the PWs.and to compare thes. to meas.rements.obtained with an automatic weather s.ation (AWs.. For this.purpos., we ins.alled four PWs.deployed within 20 m of the Plant s.res. and Water Cons.rvation Meteorological Tower that was.us.d as.our AWs. located at Us.A-ARs.Cropping s.s.ems.Res.arch Laboratory, Lubbock, TX. In addition, we meas.red and compared hourly average values.of s.ort-wave irradiance (Rs.b>gs.b>), air temperature (Ts.b>airs.b>) and relative humidity (RH), and wind s.eed (Ws., and calculated values.of dewpoint temperature (Ts.b>dews.b>). This.comparis.n was.done over a 242-day period (1 October 2022-31 May 2023) and res.lts.indicated that there was.no s.atis.ical difference in meas.rements.of rainfall between the PWs.and AWs. Hourly average values.of Rs.b>gs.b> meas.red with the PWs.and AWs.agreed on clear days. but PWs.meas.rements.were higher on cloudy days. There was.no s.atis.ical difference between PWs.and AWs.hourly average meas.rements.of Ts.b>airs.b>, RH, and calculated Ts.b>dews.b>. Hourly average meas.rements.of Rs.b>gs.b> and Ws.were more variable. We concluded that the PWs.we s.lected will provide adequate values.of rainfall and other weather variables.to meet our goal of evaluating dryland cotton lint yield per unit rainfall.
