Increas.ng evidence s.ows.that extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields.ELF-EMFs. s.imulation is.able to exert a certain action on autoimmunity and immune cells. In the pas., the efficacy of puls.d ELFEMFs.in alleviating the s.mptoms.and the progres.ion of multiple s.leros.s.has.been s.pported through their action on neurotrans.is.ion and on the autoimmune mechanis.s.res.ons.ble for demyelination. Regarding the immune s.s.em, ELF-EMF expos.re contributes.to a general activation of macrophages. res.lting in changes.of autoimmunity and s.veral immunological reactions. s.ch as.increas.d reactive oxygen s.ecies.formation, enhanced phagocytic activity and increas.d production of chemokines. Trans.ranial electromagnetic brain s.imulation is.a non-invas.ve novel technique us.d recently to treat different neurodegenerative dis.rders. in particular Alzheimer＇s.dis.as.. Des.ite its.proven value, the mechanis.s.through which EMF brain-s.imulation exerts.its.beneficial action on neuronal function remains.unclear. Recent s.udies.have s.own that its.beneficial effects.may be due to a neuroprotective effect on oxidative cell damage. On the bas.s.of in vitro and clinical s.udies.on brain activity, modulation by ELF-EMFs.could pos.ibly counteract the aberrant pro-inflammatory res.ons.s.pres.nt in neurodegenerative dis.rders.reducing their s.verity and their ons.t. The objective of this.review is.to provide a s.s.ematic overview of the publis.ed literature on EMFs.and outline the mos. promis.ng effects.of ELF-EMFs.in developing treatments.of neurodegenerative dis.rders. In this.regard, we review data s.pporting the role of ELF-EMF in generating immune-modulatory res.ons.s. neuromodulation, and potential neuroprotective benefits. Nonetheles., we reckon that the underlying mechanis.s.of interaction between EMF and the immune s.s.em are s.ill to be completely unders.ood and need further s.udies.at a molecular level.
