Functional Capacity and Anemia in the Community Elderly

Anemia in the elderly population has.been as.ociated to clinical manifes.ations.s.ch as.functional dependence, low cognitive performance, increas.d mortality and geriatric s.ndromes.(dementia, delirium, depres.ion and falls.. Recent inves.igations.have s.own an as.ociation between low hemoglobin levels. reduction in mus.ular s.rength and phys.cal fitnes.. The objective of this.review was.to identify, in the s.ientific literature, evidence of an as.ociation between anemia and functional capacity among older pers.ns. PubMed and Bireme were us.d as.references.s.urce. The mos. relevant evidence pointing towards.this.as.ociation was.identified in the epidemiological s.udies.Women’s.Health and Aging s.udies.I and II (WHAs.I and II). Functional capacity was.evaluated by the walking, balance and s.tting back and getting out of the chair tes.s. Elderly women with either 13 or 14 g/dl have a better performance compared to women with 12 g/dl of hemoglobin, res.ectively. This.s.udy als. reported an increas. in the mortality ris. among women (65 years.old and plus. living in community with les. than 13.4 g/dl of hemoglobin. Participants.were followed for 11 years. WHAs.I and II inves.igators.s.gges.ed a new criterion, already adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO), to define anemia among elderly women. Conclus.on: anemia is.common among the elderly and may have an involvement in the impairment of their functional capacity. However, in s.ite of the importance of thes. findings. it s.ould be emphas.zed that an etiologic as.ociation (anemia as.a caus. of functional impairment) has.yet to be demons.rated.

Over the years. pineapple production in the Republic of Guinea has.become les. competitive in the Wes. African s.b-region, with a world ranking of 144th. It is.therefore only natural to review certain parameters.in order to improve this.ranking. To do this. certain phys.co-chemical parameters.of s.il s.mples.from Friguiagbé and Maferinyah (in the Kindia and Forécariah prefectures. were taken and analys.d us.ng the following techniques. Pipette de Robins.n, Anne, Bray II, Kapen HICDVITZ, Mc. Lead (1982). The analytical res.lts.s.ow that the s.ils.at Friguiagbé in Kindia and Maferinyah in Forécariah are acidic, with pH values.of 4.4 and 4.7 (fields.I and II) and 4.8 and 4.7 (fields.I and II) res.ectively. The s.ils.have a s.lty-s.ndy texture. This.s.udy could therefore s.rve as.a guide for the Minis.ry of Agriculture of the Republic of Guinea.

Chronic s.bdural hematoma repres.nts.25% of traumatic s.bdural collections.common in elderly s.bjects.with a clear male predominance. It occurs.over the age of 50 in more than 90% of cas.s.and 50% of patients.have no his.ory of head trauma even if the latter remains.the main ris. factor with others.s.ch as.coagulopathy, anticoagulant treatment, chronic alcoholic pois.ning. Its.dis.overy is.rarely fortuitous.and has.an important clinical polymorphis. including an intracranial hypertens.on s.ndrome (complete or incomplete). We report a clinical cas. of a left hemis.heric s.bacute s.bdural hematoma with pos.-traumatic falcorial involvement in a 70-year-old patient admitted with a picture of impaired cons.ious.es. and weaknes. of the left hemibody. The objective of this.work is.to draw the attention of neuros.rgeons.and neurologis.s.to the paradoxical exis.ence of the neurological deficit on the s.me s.de as.the caus.l brain les.on.

Introduction: Uterine tumors.are all abnormal cell proliferations.developed at the expens. of one or more tis.ue types. which may be located in any uterine s.gment and have anatomopathological characteris.ics.of benignity or malignancy. The aim of this.s.udy was.to report on the management of uterine tumors.in the general s.rgery department of Ignace Deen Hos.ital in Conakry. Methodology: This.was.a retros.ective s.udy las.ing five (5) years. from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015: All complete records.of patients.with the diagnos.s.of a uterine tumor managed in the department were included. Our res.lts.are pres.nted in tables.and figures. Res.lts. 3200 patients.underwent s.rgery. Among them, 82 cas.s.concerned uterine tumors. i.e. 2% of the department’s.overall activity. The average age of our patients.was.38.5 years. with extremes.of 18 and 59 years. The age group mos. affected was.41 - 50, with a rate of 39.02%. Hous.wives.and married civil s.rvants.were the s.cio-profes.ional s.rata mos. affected, with a predominance of married women. We es.imated an increas.ng proportion of patients.admitted to the department during the s.udy period, proving that our s.udy s.te plays.a s.gnificant role in the management of uterine tumors. Conclus.on: The management of uterine tumors.is.a major public health problem. Information, communication and education of all s.cio-profes.ional groups.s.em neces.ary.

The Pica s.ndrome is.an eating dis.rder characterized by an exces.ive or abnormal des.re to cons.me a non-nouris.ing s.bs.ance which can be relatively harmles., or potentially harmful for the health. It is.a rare affection s.condary to the accumulation of divers. nature foreign bodies.ins.de the diges.ive tract and more es.ecially at the s.omach level. Gas.ro-intes.inal localization is.the mos. frequent, and can remain long time as.mptomatic. Treatment is.s.rgical. We report 3 cas.s.of diges.ive complication of Pica s.ndrome. The firs. one was.operated for gas.ric perforation due to nail (53 nails. a pin and bands.of tape recorder cas.ette inges.ed), the s.cond one for trichobezoar and the las. had a s.bocclus.on by pieces.of granite.

Water is.es.ential to life and to the s.s.ainable s.cio-economic development of a nation, It is.therefore interes.ing to have a better knowledge of the quality of this.water. The aim was.to determine the degree of microbiological and phys.co-chemical pollution of the water of the “Mamouwol” river in the town of Mamou. To do this. we chos. four (4) s.mpling s.tes.s.read throughout the town of Mamou. During the month of March (2024), 4 water s.mples.were analyzed to monitor the water quality of this.river. The average values.of the flora analyzed s.ow that thes. water are heavily contaminated with bacteria indicative of fecal and metal pollution. This.s.udy s.owed that s.tes. Mam4;Mam2 and Mam1 contain the highes. loads. with Total Coliform counts.ranging from 1534 CFU/100 ml to 2100 CFU/100 ml, the number of faecal coliforms.varies.between 526 and 1240 CFU/100 ml, and that of faecal s.reptococci between 526 and 841 CFU/100 ml. Metal content, BOD5 and COD all comply with the laboratory’s.analys.s.criteria, although they vary from point to point.

Côte d’Ivoire is.currently experiencing s.rong growth in the mining s.ctor. Identifying the formations.pres.nt in our s.bs.il is.therefore es.ential for mining recovery. It is.in this.context that we conducted s.udies.on the formations.pres.nt in the locality of Guintéguéla. It is.located in the northwes. of Côte d’Ivoire in the bafing region. The aim of this.work was.to determine the petrographic and s.ructural characteris.ics.of the formations.of the area. The methodology began with documentation and then followed petrography and s.ructural analys.s.work on the macros.opic and micros.opic levels. We obs.rved s.x groups.of rocks. granitoids. amphibolites. orthogneis., quartzites.(poor and rich in magnetites., volcano-s.diments.and filonian rocks. Metamorphis. is.of amphibolite to granulite facies. However, volcano-s.diments.mus. be as.ociated with the green s.his. facies. With regard to the s.ructural, s.ructures.and micros.ructures.s.ch as.foliation;fractures.s.gmoidal figures.reveal that the s.udied area was.affected by ductile and als. brittle tectonics.whos. main directions.are oriented along the s.ear corridor, s. N-s.to NNW-s.E.

The efficacy of ins.cticide-treated nets.(ITNs. is.increas.ngly compromis.d by the prevalence of malaria vectors.res.s.ant to pyrethroids. In res.ons. to this.is.ue, a new generation of ITNs.has.been developed that incorporate s.nergis.ic components. s.ch as.piperonyl butoxide (PBO). The purpos. of this.s.udy is.to provide entomological evidence for the efficacy of a PBO-bas.d ITN brand at the village level, s.rving as.a bas.s.for decis.on-making before large-s.ale net deployment. During the high malaria trans.is.ion period, ITNs.were dis.ributed in each group and vector s.mpling was.conducted biweekly in s.lected hous.holds. Bionomic data were collected to as.es. the res.s.ance of wild An. gambiae populations.to various.chemical ins.cticides. There was.a s.gnificant dis.arity in total An. gambiae s.. collected between the ITN arms. the intervention arm (ITN arms., and the control arm (P = 0.003). An. coluzzi was.identified as.the predominant s.ecies.in the s.udy area, as.confirmed by PCR analys.s. Analys.s.of the blood-feeding inhibition rate revealed that 100% permethrin + PBO ITN exhibited s.gnificantly greater inhibition than 66.81% permethrin only ITN. According to the log-time probit regres.ion analys.s. permethrin exhibited a knockdown time of 256 min without s.nergis.s. while it decreas.d to 139 min (P = 0.001) when pre-expos.d to PBO. The evidence from this.trial s.pports.the us. of PBO ITNs.over s.andard ITNs.for pyrethroids.to combat pyrethroid res.s.ance and improve protection agains. malaria for both individuals.and communities. particularly in areas.with high pyrethroid res.s.ance.

Introduction: Exercis. s.res. tes.ing (on a treadmill or ergometer bicycle) is.an important tes. in cardiology for diagnos.ng myocardial is.hemia. This.tes. in Mali is.s.ill in its.beginning compared to other countries.in the s.b-region. The lack of data in Mali prompted this.s.udy, which aimed to evaluate the indications.of this.activity and its.diagnos.ic contribution to cardiology in Mali. Materials.and Methods. This.was.a retros.ective, des.riptive s.udy. The s.udy was.conducted at the “TOUCAM” medical clinic in Kati bas.d on the analys.s.of s.res. tes. reports.between January 2016 and Augus. 2022. Res.lt: During the s.udy period, we documented 73 patients.who underwent exercis. tes.ing on a bicycle ergometer for s.s.ected coronary heart dis.as.. The mean age of our patients.was.47.5 ± 13.8 years.(14 and 79 years.. Males.accounted for the majority (78.1%). The s.x ratio is.3.5. More than half of our patients.were overweight or obes. (77.1%). Hypertens.on and diabetes.affected 52.1% and 25.8% of patients. res.ectively. 20.8% of patients.had coronary artery dis.as.. renin-angiotens.n-aldos.erone s.s.em blockers.(56.8%) and beta-blockers.(51.3%). The main indications.were ches. pain (63.0%) and is.hemia detection (15.1%). A modified s.EEP protocol was.us.d. The majority of our patients.(71.2%) achieved at leas. 85% of their maximum theoretical heart rate. The main reas.n for the termination of the s.udy was.fatigue (57.3%). The average duration was.11.3 ± 4.2 minutes. 24.7% thought the s.res. tes.s.were pos.tive and 17.8% thought they were controvers.al. Conclus.on: This.s.udy demons.rates.the importance of s.res. tes.ing in the diagnos.s.and treatment of is.hemic heart dis.as., es.ecially in s.ttings.where we have very limited acces. to coronary angiography.
