strong>Introduction:strong> The World Health Organization establishes that 80% of the world’s population uses traditional medicine for their primary care, because they contain compounds responsible for their properties. strong>Objective:strong> To evaluate the antifungal effect of the essential oil of Citrus paradisi against C. albicans and the cytotoxic effect in three cell lines in vitro. strong>Methods:strong> The phytochemical characterization of the oil was carried out by chemical methods and Gas chromatography (GC-Ms) and the antifungal effect against C. albicans (ATCC 90029) was evaluated by the Kirby-Bauer method, which evaluated concentrations of 0.75 - 20 μg/mL and compared with nystatin 100,000 Ul/mL as a positive control. The percentage of the relative inhibitory effect was calculated. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined at 24 hours. Moreover, the cytotoxic effect on C. albicans and cell lines was determined by the colorimetric MTT tetrazolium assay. Finally, the antifungal effect against Candida strains isolated from clinical samples was evaluated at a concentration of 20 μg/mL. strong>Results:strong> The essential oil showed an antifungal effect with a percentage of inhibition of 123%. The MIC was 2.5 μg/mL, and the cytotoxicity index was 5.44 μg/mL for C. albicans. The IC50 values were 21.060, 9.482 and 4.176 μg/mL for Vero E6, J774A.1 and MDBK cells respectively. strong>Conclusion:strong> These results show the use of C. paradisi essential oil as an alternative treatment in oral antifungal therapy, it is beneficial due to its antifungal effect and its low toxicity on cell cultures.

To study the molecular mechanisms involved in the hepatoprotective effects of naringenin (NAR) on carbon tetrachloride (CClsub>4sub>)-induced liver fibrosis. METHODsThirty-two male Wistar rats (120-150 g) were randomly divided into four groups: (1) a control group (n = 8) that received 0.7% carboxy methyl-cellulose (NAR vehicle) 1 mL/daily p.o.; (2) a CClsub>4sub> group (n = 8) that received 400 mg of CClsub>4sub>/kg body weight i.p. 3 times a week for 8 wk; (3) a CClsub>4sub> + NAR (n = 8) group that received 400 mg of CClsub>4sub>/kg body weight i.p. 3 times a week for 8 wk and 100 mg of NAR/kg body weight daily for 8 wk p.o.; and (4) an NAR group (n = 8) that received 100 mg of NAR/kg body weight daily for 8 wk p.o. After the experimental period, animals were sacrificed under ketamine and xylazine anesthesia. Liver damage markers such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (AP), γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GTP), reduced glutathione (GsH), glycogen content, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and collagen content were measured. The enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) was assessed. Liver histopathology was performed utilizing Masson’s trichrome and hematoxylin-eosin stains. Zymography assays for MMP-9 and MMP-2 were carried out. Hepatic TGF-β, α-sMA, CTGF, Col-I, MMP-13, NF-κB, IL-1, IL-10, smad7, smad3, psmad3 and pJNK proteins were detected via western blot. REsULTsNAR administration prevented increases in ALT, AP, γ-GTP, and GPx enzymatic activity; depletion of GsH and glycogen; and increases in LPO and collagen produced by chronic CClsub>4sub> intoxication (P stopathology showed a decrease in collagen deposition when rats received NAR in addition to CClsub>4sub>. Although zymography assays showed that CClsub>4sub> produced an increase in MMP-9 and MMP-2 gelatinase activity; interestingly, NAR administration was associated with normal MMP-9 and MMP-2 activity (P < 0.05). Effect of split applications of urea on protein size distribution, physical dough properties, and baking performance of five experimental bread wheat lines

Five experimental bread wheat lines (BWL) were grown at the Yaqui Valley Experimental station in sonora, México during two consecutive growing cycles. The effect of five nitrogen fertilization (NF) treatments on protein size distribution (PsD), physical dough properties (PDP), and baking performance of the BWL was evaluated. Polymeric and monomeric proteins were evalu-ated by sE-HPLC. PDP were carried out by the National Mixograph and the TA-XT2 Texture Analyzer. Baking performance was evaluated using the straight dough method. Protein content (PC), main protein fractions (glutenins, gliadins, albumins-globulins), and mixograph development time (MDT) were significantly influenced by NF treatment and BWL but not by their interaction. On the other hand, PDP measured by the Kieffer rig, and baking performance were significantly influenced by the main factors (NF and BWL) and their interaction. The amount and timing of fertilizer applied to the BWL modified the PC, PsD, PDP, and bread loaf volume. PDP exhibited a larger variation in comparison to the PsD of glutenins. The split application of 150 kg of urea/ha (50-50-50) to all BWL showed a better loaf volume response than the same amount of urea applied at sowing (150-0-0). The application of 300 kg of urea/ha to all BWL, either at sowing or at three split applications of 100 kg of urea/ha each, resulted in higher flour unextractable polymeric protein (FUPP). On the other hand, the split application of 100-100-100 kg of urea/ha to three of the BWL represented the higher total unextractable polymeric protein (TUPP). Differences on PC and PsD were reflected on differences on PDP and bread loaf volume observed among the BWL.

Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri is the causative agent of severe and acute respiratory problems in goats, which spreads rapidly and represents high mortality. The serological profile of the goat population, from nine regions in seven states of Mexico, was screened by the Complement Fixation test (CF) in sera from asymptomatic goats and animals with mild respiratory symptoms. sera and nasal swabs of 827 goats were collected for the isolation of the organism. An antiserum was prepared against a previously isolated field strain of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri. CF Antibody titers were associated with the results of the isolates to determine the cutoff point. The CF was considered as positive if its result was ≥1/16. The CF registered 251 positive goats (30.35%) and 576 (69.65%) negative;the test showed high sensitivity (93.33%) and specificity (72.27%). In the specific case of diagnosis for mycoplasmosis associated with respiratory problems in goats, the CF proved to be a good diagnosis test, this study determined that 30% of the goat population showed antibody titers against Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri and revealed those animals who have had contact with this microorganism during their lives regardless of the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms.

Traditional mining activities are usually correlated with high levels of soil pollution, which is a major environmental concern. Extensive mining activities have taken place in the san Joaquin region in the state of Querétaro, México resulting in high levels of mercury soil pollution (up to 1532 ± 300 mg/kg). We isolated mercury-resistant fungal strains from the san Joaquin region soils and identified them through morphologic characteristics and ITs rDNA region sequence analysis. We determined that fungi isolated belong to the genus Trichoderma. All the isolates selected showed the ability to catalyze the volatilization of Hg. For air sampling, an active sampling device was constructed and using acid KMnO4 as an absorbent, the concentration of mercury in solution was determined through the cold vapor atomic absorption method. The results show mercury volatilization from the fungal species assay, with a maximum of 213.04 ± 32.6 μg/m3 while mycelium accumulation ranged from less than 17.5 ± 2.9 to 20.0 ± 3.4 μg/g. The fungal isolates were also evaluated for their ability to reduce mercury uptake in Arabidopsis thaliana. These observations suggest the utility of Trichoderma for the mobilization of mercury in those contaminated soils.

[背景]产前暴露于双酚A（BPA）及邻苯二甲酸酯会影响胎儿发育；然而该类研究很少，且得出的结果不一致。[目的]对一个西班牙出生队列中488对母婴进行研究，评估产前暴露于BPA及邻苯二甲酸酯是否与胎儿发育相关。[方法]检测第一和第三孕期两次尿液样本中BPA及8种邻苯二甲酸酯[4种邻苯二甲酸二（2-乙基己基）酯代谢物（DEHPm），邻苯二甲酸单卞酯（MBzP）以及3种低分子量邻苯二甲酸酯代谢物（LMWPm）]。另外，估计股骨长度（FL）、头围（HC）、腹围（AC）、双顶径（BPD）的生长曲线，估计孕期（12—20周，20～34周）的胎儿体重，并测量出生体重、出生长度、出生头围以及胎盘重量。[结果]总体上，结果并不支持孕期暴露于BPA或DEHPm与胎儿发育参数相关。产前MBzP暴露与20～34孕周的FL呈正相关，MBzP浓度每增加一倍，平均FL增加3．7％（95％CI：0．75，6．63％）。MBzP与男婴出生体重呈正相关（48g；95％CI：6，90），但在女婴中没有相关性（-27g；95％CI：-79，25）（交互作用P=0．04）。LMWPm邻苯二甲酸单丁酯（MnBP）与12—20孕周的HC呈负相关[平均HC降低了4．88％（95％CI：-8．36，-1．36％）]。[结论]本研究首次将暴露生物标志重复测量值与胎儿期多种发育参数相结合，发现暴露于BPA或邻苯二甲酸酯与胎儿发育不相关。邻苯二甲酸酯代谢物MBzP与MnBP与部分胎儿发育参数相关，但这些结果还需要重复验证。
