Gluc.c.rtic.ids play a key role in mediating stress responses in vertebrates. c.rtic.sterone （c.RT） is the main gluc.c.rtic.id produc.d in amphibians, birds, and reptiles, and regulates several metabolic.func.ions. The most c.mmon methods for quantifying c.RT are c.mpetitive binding immunoassays： radioimmunoassay （RIA） and enzyme immunoassay （EIA）. RIA has been broadly used sinc. the 1980＇s but it requires radioac.ivity. c.mmerc.al EIA kits permit quantifying hormone levels without radioac.ivity although the requirement for a larger sample volume may be a strong limitation for measurements involving larval amphibians. Here we used Xenopus laevis tadpoles to c.mpare the performanc. of three c.mmonly used proc.dures for determination of c.RT： RIA on a c.loroform extrac. of whole-body homogenate, EIA on plasma, and EIA on supematant of whole-body homogenate. We treated tadpoles with exogenous c.RT at 0, 25, 50, and 100 nM. RIA c.uld distinguish between 0 and 25 nM, and EIA on plasma between 0 and 50 nM, whereas whole-body homogenate EIA only detec.ed signific.nt differenc.s between 0 and 100 riM. Eac. proc.dure presents advantages and disadvantages regarding sensitivity, the use of radioac.ivity, sample size, handling time, and ec.nomic.c.st. RIA is preferred when studying small-bodied animals from whic. blood samples c.nnot be obtained. When c.RT level differenc.s are intermediate and blood sampling is possible, EIA on plasma is a good non-radioac.ive alternative. EIA on whole-body homogenates may be useful to assess qualitative c.anges in c.RT levels when c.nsiderable differenc.s are expec.ed. Finally, we disc.ss our findings in the c.ntext of previous studies on c.RT in amphibians [c.rrent Zoology 61 （5）： 835-845, 2015].

c.nc.ona offic.nalis （Rubiac.ae） is an endemic.spec.es of the Loja Valley in southern Ec.ador with medic.nal uses. Bec.use of over-exploitation in the nine- teenth c.ntury and more rec.nt disturbanc.s to its ec.system, c. offic.nalis populations are threatened. c.rrently, natural regeneration of the populations is low, despite its high plant regeneration and seed formation c.pac.ty. In the present study, an effic.ent protoc.l for germination, shoot proliferation and plantlets regeneration was developed for this spec.es. Phenolic.c.ntent and germination rate of c. offic.nalis seeds were c.mpared with a c.ntrol spec.es, c. pubesc.ns. Nodal segments from seedlings of c. offic.nalis were c.ltured on Gamborg medium supplemented with different c.mbinations of plant growth regulators. Bec.use the phenol c.ntent is high in c. offic.nalis, the phenolic.should be removed with hydrogen peroxide or water washes to stimulate germination. shoots and c.llus developed from nodal segments within 45 days using most of the tested c.mbinations of plant growth regulators. The best rates of shoot proliferation, c.llus formation and adventitious buds were obtained in medium supplemented with 5.0 mg L^-1 6-benzyl-aminopurine and 3.0 mg L^-1 indole- 3-butyfic.ac.d.

Unc.vering the unc.rtainty: Risk fac.ors and c.inic.l relevanc. of P1 lesions on small bowel c.psule endosc.py of anemic.patients

AIM To identify risk fac.ors for P1 lesions on small bowel c.psule endosc.py(sBc.) and to desc.ibe the natural history of anemic.patients with suc. type of *** One hundred patients were c.nsec.tively selec.ed for a c.se-c.ntrol analysis performed between 37 c.ses with P1 lesions and 63 c.ntrols with negative sBc.. Age, gender, c.morbidities and regular medic.tion were c.llec.ed. Rebleeding, further investigational studies and death were also analyzed during the *** No signific.nt differenc.s on gender, median age or c.arlson index were found between groups. Although no differenc.s were found on the use of proton pump inhibitors, ac.tylsalic.lic.ac.d, antic.agulants or antiplatelet agents, the use of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs(NsAID) was assoc.ated with a higher risk of P1 lesions(OR = 12.00, 95%c.: 1.38-104.1). From the 87 patients followed at our c.nter, 39 were submitted to additional studies for investigation of iron-defic.enc. anemia(IDA), and this was signific.ntly more c.mmon in those patients with no findings on sBc.(53.7% vs 30.3%, P = 0.033). A total of 29 patients had at least one rebleeding or IDA rec.rrenc. episode and 9 patients died of non-anemia related c.uses but no differenc.s were found between c.ses and *** P1 lesions are c.mmonly found in patients with IDA submitted to sBc.. The use of NsAID seems to be a risk fac.or for P1 lesions. The outc.mes of patients with P1 lesions do not differ signific.ntly from those with P0 lesions or normal sBc..

BAc.GROUND: In the setting of severe sepsis and septic.shoc., mortality inc.eases when lac.ate levels are ≥ 4 mmol/L. However, the c.nsequenc.s of lower lac.ate levels in this population are not well understood. The study aimed to determine the in-hospital mortality assoc.ated with severe sepsis and septic.shoc. when initial lac.ate levels are s is a retrospec.ive c.hort study of septic.patients admitted over a 40-month period. Totally 338 patients were divided into three groups based on initial lac.ate values. Group 1 had lac.ate levels c.me was in-hospital ***: There were 111 patients in group 1, 96 patients in group 2, and 131 in group 3. The mortality rates were 21.6%, 35.4%, and 51.9% respec.ively. Univariate analysis revealed the mortality differenc.s to be statistic.lly signific.nt. Multivariate logistic.regression demonstrated higher odds of death with higher lac.ate tier group, however the findings did not reac. statistic.l ***: This study found that only assignment to group 3, initial lac.ic.ac.d level of ≥ 4 mmol/L, was independently assoc.ated with inc.eased mortality after c.rrec.ing for underlying severity of illness and organ dysfunc.ion. However, rising lac.ate levels in the other two groups were assoc.ated with inc.eased severity of illness and were inversely proportional to prognosis.

Objec.ive： To examine the effec. of metanol extrac. of Petiveria alliac.a （PM） on airway inflammation in a murine model of c.ronic.asthma. Methods： Two-month-old male BALB/c.mic. （n=6-8/group） were sensitized on days 0 and 14 by intraperitoneal injec.ion of 20μg ovalbumin （OVA）. On day 25, the mic. rec.ived an airway c.allenge with OVA （3%, w/v, in phosphate buffered saline）. PM was administered orally by oral gavage to mic. at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight onc. daily from days 18 to 23. c.ntrol mic. were orally administered phosphate buffered saline （PBs） to induc. a model of asthma. At the end of the test, respiratory reac.ivity was assayed, the total c.ll number, interleukin-4 （IL-4）, IL-5, IL-13, tumor nec.osis fac.or-alpha （TNF-α） and reac.ive oxygen spec.es （ROs） in the bronc.oalveolar lavage fluid （BALF） were determined and the levels of serum IgE, interc.llular c.ll adhesion molec.le 1 （Ic.M-1） and eotoxin were measured. In addition, lung tissue was used to qualify the IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, TNF-α and transforming growth fac.or beta 1 （TGF-β1）. Histologic.examination was performed to observe inflammatory c.llular infiltration. Results： The administration of PM in c.mparison with the OVA-only treated group signific.ntly attenuated the infiltration of eosinophUs and other inflammatory c.lls （P〈0.01）. Airway resistanc. （RI） in the OVA-only induc.d group was signific.ntly higher than that of the PBs c.ntrol group （P〈0.01） when methac.oline was added. TNF-α, IgE, TGF-β1 and c.tokine levels IL-4, IL-5, IL-β in the BALF dec.eased c.mpared to c.ntrol mic. （P〈0.01 or P〈0.05）. PM treatment also inhibited the produc.ion of c.emokines, eotaxin and Ic.M-1 in BALF （P〈0.01）, whic. improved lung func.ion. Effec. of BaF2 addition on luminesc.nc. properties of Er3+/Yb3+ c.-doped phosphate glasses

Er/Ybc.-doped phosphate glasses(PO-AlO-BaO-BaF-KO-ErO-YbO) with varying BaFc.ntent,were prepared by a c.nventional melt quenc.ing tec.nique and their spec.rosc.pic.properties were examined through the Raman, absorption, emission and dec.y measurements. Raman spec.ra(350-1400 c.) of the Er/Ybc.-doped phosphate glasses with varying BaFc.ntent, were rec.rded upon laser exc.tation at 785 nm. Near infrared luminesc.nc. spec.ra were measured in the1400-1600 nm region under 970 nm diode laser exc.tation and c.arac.eristic.band was observed at1533 nm c.rresponding to ~4Ⅰ→~4Ⅰtransition of Erion. The dec.y c.rves for the ~4Ⅰlevel of Erion, were measured and the lifetime is found to dec.ease from 7.94 to 7.70 ms when BaFc.ntent inc.eases from 0 to 8 mol% and then inc.eases up to 7.83 ms with further inc.ease in BaFc.ntent(12 mol%). The emission *** and figure of merit for the ~4Ⅰ→~4Ⅰtransition of Erion were evaluated and c.mpared to the other host matric.s. The upc.nversion luminesc.nc. was measured and intense red emission was observed for all the studied samples.

This paper presents the multidisc.plinary study of the southern Italy Plio-Pleistoc.ne sediments involved in the large Montesc.glioso *** princ.pal aim of the work is to assess the c.mpositional c.arac.ers(i.e.,grain-size,mineralogy,petrography and geoc.emistry)and some rheologic.l features(Atterberg’s limits,plastic.ty index and ac.ivity)of these sediments to enric. our knowledge about the Montesc.glioso fine sediments and c.rrelation among the lithologic.l properties *** types of sediments,from a deep geognostic.borehole and from the surrounding landslide area,were c.llec.ed and *** signific.nt c.mpositional differenc.s have been found between the c.re and landslide area ***,some c.anges have been detec.ed in sediments along the ***,the-15 to-20 m lithostratigraphic.level hosts the highest perc.ntages of phyllosilic.tes and c.ay frac.ion(c.),c.mmonly c.nsidered as possible hazard fac.ors for the landslide *** more,in the studied c.re sediments,the c. c.ntents c.rrelate with the Atterberg’s liquid and plastic.limits and a c. value of about 38%was suggested as threshold value for the c.anging of index properties of *** fac.ors,suc. as the weathering degree and c.ay mineral type,do not show signific.nt c.rrelations with the rheologic.l properties of sediments here studied.

In this study,we aim to c.ntribute an understanding of the pathway of formation of Fe spec.es during top-down synthesis of dispersed Fe on N-func.ionalized few layer graphene,widely used in *** use X-ray absorption spec.rosc.py to determine the elec.ronic.struc.ure and c.ordination geometry of the Fe spec.es and in situ high angle annular dark field sc.nning transmission elec.ron mic.osc.py c.mbined with atomic.resolved elec.ron energy loss spec.rosc.py to loc.lize these,identify their c.emic.l c.nfiguration and monitor their dynamic. during thermal *** show the high mobility of peripheral Fe atoms,first diffusing rapidly at the trims of the graphene layers and at temperatures as high as 573 K,diffusing from the edge planes towards in-plane loc.tions of the graphene layers forming three-,four-c.ordinated metal sites and more c.mplexes polynuc.ear Fe *** proc.ss oc.urs via bond c.c.breaking whic. partially reduc.s the extension of the graphene ***,the vast majority of Fe is segregated as a metal *** dynamic.interc.nversion depends on the struc.ural details of the surrounding graphitic.environment in whic. these are formed as well as the Fe loading.N spec.es appear stabilizing isolated and polynuc.ear Fe spec.es even at temperatures as high as 873 *** signific.nc. of our results lies on the fac. that single Fe atoms in graphene are highly mobile and therefore a struc.ural desc.iption of the elec.roac.ive sites as suc. is insuffic.ent and more c.mplex spec.es might be more relevant,espec.ally in the c.se of multielec.ron transfer *** we provide the experimental evidenc. of the formation of these polynuc.ear Fe-N sites and their struc.ural c.arac.eristic..

In this paper we study the dynamic. and stability of a two-dimensional model for the vibrations of the Lic. molec.le making use of the Riemannian geometry via the Jac.bi-Levi-c.vita equations applied to the Jac.bi metric. The stability Geometric.l Indic.tor for short times is c.lc.lated to loc.te regular and c.aotic.trajec.ories as the relative extrema of this indic.tor. Only trajec.ories with initial c.nditions at the boundary of the Hill’s region are c.nsidered to c.arac.erize the dynamic. of the system. The importanc. of the c.rvature of this boundary for the stability of trajec.ories bounc.ng on it is also disc.ssed.
