The pinewood nematode（PWN）, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, has become one of the most severe threats to pine forest worldwide. Nematodes, migrating through resin canals and feeding on the living cells, induce rapid metabolic changes in ray parenchyma cells, create cavitation areas, decrease xylem water content and oleoresin exudation, and cause necrosis of parenchyma and cambial cells. This study focused on the impact of PWN infection on technological parameters of wood and evaluated the impact of anatomic and biochemical incidences of tree defense reactions on basic density, extractive content and moisture sorption properties of Pinus pinaster *** of infected and uninfected wood were *** presence of nematodes reduced wood basic density by2 % and decreased the total content of extractives in infected wood as compared with uninfected（5.98 and8.90 % of dry wood mass, respectively）. Extractives in infected trees had inverse distribution along the trunk as compared with uninfected trees. The adsorption isotherms for infected and uninfected wood had similar *** recorded differences（some statistically significant） in the equilibrium moisture content of infected and uninfected wood under varying environmental conditions. Despite the verified differences in wood basic density, extractive content and moisture sorption properties, the overall conclusion is that the PWN had a slight impact on these characteristics of wood.

AIM:To derive and validate a score for the prediction of mid-term bleeding events following discharge for myocardial infarction(MI).METHODs:One thousand and fifty patients admitted for MI and followed for 19.9 ± 6.7 mo were assigned to a derivation cohort.A new risk model,called BLEEDMI,was developed for predicting clinically significant bleeding events during follow-up(primary endpoint) and a composite endpoint of significant hemorrhage plus all-cause mortality(secondary endpoint),incorporating the following variables:age,diabetes mellitus,arterial hypertension,smoking habits,blood urea nitrogen,glomerular filtration rate and hemoglobin at admission,history of stroke,bleeding during hospitalization or previous major bleeding,heart failure during hospitalization and anti-thrombotic therapies prescribedat *** BLEED-MI model was tested for calibration,accuracy and discrimination in the derivation sample and in a new,independent,validation cohort comprising 852 patients admitted at a later ***:The BLEED-MI score showed good calibration in both derivation and validation samples(HosmerLemeshow test P value 0.371 and 0.444,respectively) and high accuracy within each individual patient(Brier score 0.061 and 0.067,respectively).Its discriminative performance in predicting the primary outcome was relatively high(c-statistic of 0.753 ± 0.032 in the derivation cohort and 0.718 ± 0.033 in the validation sample).Incidence of primary/secondary endpoints increased progressively with increasing BLEED-MI *** the validation sample,a BLEED-MI score below 2 had a negative predictive value of 98.7%(152/154) for the occurrence of a clinically significant hemorrhagic episode during follow-up and for the composite endpoint of post-discharge hemorrhage plus all-cause *** accurate prediction of bleeding events was shown independently of mortality,as BLEED-MI predicted bleeding with similar efficacy in patients who did not die during follow-up:Area Under the

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a finite aligned space to be a topological space, we prove the existence of two kinds of convex geometries, and we compare several concepts and results for arbitrary （that is, not necessarily finite） aligned, topological and Higgs spaces.

AIM： To evaluate the use of web-based technologies to assess the learning curve and reassess reproducibility of a simplified version of a classification for gastric magnification chromoendoscopy （MC）. METHODs： As part of a multicenter trial, a hybrid approach was taken using a CD-ROM, with 20 films of MC lasting 5 s each and an ＂autorun＂ file triggering a local HTML frameset referenced to a remote questionnaire through an Internet connection. Three endoscopists were asked to prospectively and independently classify 10 of these films randomly selected with at least 3 d apart. The answers were centrally stored and returned to participants together with adequate feedback with the right answer. REsULTs： For classification in 3 groups, both intra- [Cohen＇s kappa （K） = 0.79-1.00 to 0.89-1.00] and inter-observer agreement increased from 1st （moderate） to 6th observation （k = 0.94）. Also, agreement with reference increased in the last observations （0.90, 1.00 and 1.00, for observers A, B and C, respectively）. Validity of 100% was obtained by all observers at their 4th observation. When a 4th （sub）group was considered, inter-observer agreement was almost perfect （K = 0.92） at 6th observation. The relation with reference clearly improved into K （0.93-1.00） and sensitivity （75%-100%） at their 6th observations. CONCLUsION： This MC classification seems to be easily explainable and learnable as shown by excellent intra- and inter-observer agreement, and improved agreement with reference. A web system such as the one used in this study may be useful for endoscopic or other image based diagnostic procedures with respect to definition, education and dissemination.

Rainfall simulators have been used for many years contributing to the understanding of soil and water conservation ***,rainfall simulators’design and operation might be rather demanding for achieving specific rainfall intensity distributions and drop characteristics and are still open for *** study explores the potential of combining spray nozzle simulators with meshes to change rainfall characteristics,namely drop properties(drop diameters and fall speeds).A rainfall simulator laboratory set-up was prepared that enabled the incorporation of different wire meshes beneath the spray *** tests conducted in this exploratory work included different types of spray nozzles,mesh materials(plastic and steel),square apertures and wire thicknesses,and positions of the meshes in relation to the *** intensity and drop size distribution and fall speed were *** showed that the meshes combined with nozzles increased the mean rainfall intensity on the 1 m^(2) control plot below the nozzle and altered the rain drops’properties,by increasing the mass-weighted mean drop diameter,for example.
