Nematodes are indicators of soil quality and soil *** of the relationships between nematode-based soil quality indices and environmental properties is beneficial for assessing environmental threats on soil *** study evaluated the spatial distribution of nematode-based soil quality indices in a 23-ha heavy metal-polluted nature reserve using geostatistical *** expected that a selection of abiotic soil properties(pH and moisture,clay,organic matter,cadmium(Cd),and zinc(Zn)contents)could explain a significant portion of the spatial variation of the indices and that regression kriging could more accurately model their spatial distribution than ordinary kriging.A stratified simple random sampling scheme was used to select 80 locations where soil samples were taken to extract nematodes and derive the *** area had a distinct gradient in soil properties with Cd and Zn content ranging from 0.07 to 68.9 and 5.3 to 1329 mg kg^(-1),*** regression models were fitted to describe the relationships between the indices and soil *** also modelling the spatial correlation structure of regression residuals using spherical semivariograms,regression kriging was used to produce maps of the *** regression models explained between 21% and 44% of the total original variance in the *** pH was a significant explanatory variable in almost all cases,while heavy metal conent had a remarkably low *** some cases,the regression residuals had spatial *** validation indicated that in all cases,regression kriging performed slightly better because of having lower values of the root mean square prediction error and a mean prediction error closer to zero than ordinary *** study showed the importance of soil properties in explaining the spatial distribution of biological soil quality indices in ecological risk assessment.

Binary interactions with high accretion rates onto main sequence stars

Energetic outflows from main sequence stars accreting mass at very high rates might account for the powering of some eruptive objects, such as merging main sequence stars, major eruptions of luminous blue variables, e.g., the great Eruption of Eta Carinae, and other intermediate luminosity optical transients（ILOTs; red novae; red transients）. These powerful outflows could potentially also supply the extra energy required in the common envelope process and in the grazing envelope evolution of binary systems. We propose that a massive outflow/jets mediated by magnetic fields might remove energy and angular momentum from the accretion disk to allow such high accretion rate flows. By examining the possible activity of the magnetic fields of accretion disks, we conclude that indeed main sequence stars might accrete mass at very high rates, up to≈10^-2m⊙yr^-1for solar type stars, and up toion≈1 m⊙yr^-1for very massive stars. We speculate that magnetic fields amplified in such extreme condits might lead to the formation of massive bipolar outflows that can remove most of the disk＇s energy and angular momentum. It is this energy and angular momentum removal that allows the very high mass accretion rate onto main sequence stars.

Effect of controlled rolling on the martensitic hardenability of dual phase steel

The C-mn and C-mn-Nb steels were thermo-mechanically processed to develop dual phase steel and to study the effect of controlled rolling on the martensitic hardenability of austenite. The steel specimens were intercritically annealed at 790℃, rolled at that temperature to the reductions of 10%, 23%, and 47% and immediately cooled at different rates. Quantitative metallography was used to construct the microstructure map, which illustrated that increasing deformation progressively reduced the proportion of new ferrite formed at all cooling rates and increased the amount of martensite at fast and intermediate rates. The martensitic hardenability of austenite remaining after all the rolling reductions was plotted as a function of cooling rates. It was observed that for the austenite-martensite conversion efficiencies greater than about 25%, controlled rolling increased the martensitic hardenability of austenite.

Kinetics of hydrogen peroxide quenching following UV/H_(2)O_(2)advanced oxidation by thiosulfate,bisulfite,and chlorine in drinking water treatment

Residual H_(2)O_(2)from UV/H_(2)O_(2)treatment can be quenched by thiosulfate,bisulfite,and chlorine,but the kinetics of these reactions have not been reported under the full range of practical *** this study,the rates of H_(2)O_(2)quenching by these compounds were compared in different water matrices,temperatures,pH,and when using different forms of bisulfite and *** general,it was confirmed that thiosulfate would be too slow to serve as a quenching agent in most practical *** pH 7-8.5,chlorine tends to quench H_(2)O_(2)more than 20 times faster than bisulfite in the various conditions *** important observation was that in lightly-buffered water(e.g.,alkalinity of 20 mg/L as CaCO_(3)),the form of chlorine can have a large impact on quenching rate,with gaseous chlorine slowing the reaction due to its lowering of the pH,and hypochlorite having the opposite *** impacts will become less significant when water buffer capacity(i.e.,alkalinity)increases(e.g.,to 80 mg/L as CaCO_(3)).In addition,water temperature should be considered as the time required to quench H_(2)O_(2)by chlorine at 4℃is up to 3 times longer than at 20℃.

AIm： To investigate intestinal alkaline phosphatase （iAP） in the intestinal mucosa of children with inflammatory bowel disease （IBD）. mETHODS： Colonic biopsy samples were taken from 15 newly diagnosed IBD patients and from 10 healthy controls. In IBD patients, specimens were obtainedboth from inflamed and non-inflamed areas. The lAP mRNA and protein expression was determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting analysis, respectively. Tissue localiza- tion of lAP and Toll-like receptor （TLR） 4 was investi- gated by immunofluorescent staining. RESULTS： The lAP protein level in the inflamed muco- sa of children with Crohn＇s disease （CD） and ulcerative colitis （UC） was significantly decreased when compared with controls （both P 〈 0.05）. Similarly, we found a significantly decreased level of lAP protein in the in- flamed mucosa in CD compared with non-inflamed mucosa in CD （P 〈 0.05）. In addition, the iAP protein level in inflamed colonic mucosa in patients with UC was decreased compared with non-inflamed mucosa in patients with CD （P 〈 0.05）. lAP protein levels in the non-inflamed mucosa of patients with CD were similar to controls, lAP mRNA expression in inflamed colonic mucosa of children with CD and UC was not significant- ly different from that in non-inflamed colonic mucosa with CD. Expression of lAP mRNA in patients with non- inflamed mucosa and in controls were similar. Co-local- ization of lAP with TLR4 showed intense staining with a dotted-like pattern, lAP was present in the inflamed and non-inflamed mucosa of patients with CD, UC, and in control biopsy specimens, irrespective of whether it was present in the terminal ileum or in the colon. However, the fluorescent signal of TLR4 was more pro- nounced in the colon compared with the terminal ileum in all groups studied. Background:Proprioceptive accuracy refers to the individual’s ability to perceive proprioceptive information,that is,the information referring to the actual state of the locomotor system,which originates from mechanoreceptors located in various parts of the locomotor system and from tactile receptors located in the *** accuracy appears to be an important aspect in the evaluation of sensorimotor functioning;however,no widely accepted standard assessment *** this systematic review,our goal was to identify and categorize different methods that are used to assess different aspects of proprioceptive ***:A literature search was conducted in 5 different databases(Pubmed,SPORTDiscus,PsycINFO,ScienceDirect,and SpringerLink).Results:Overall,1139 scientific papers reporting 1346 methods were included in this *** methods assess 8 different aspects of proprioception:(a)the perception of joint position,(b)movement and movement extent,(c)trajectory,(d)velocity,and the sense of(e)force,(f)muscle tension,(g)weight,and(h)*** apply various paradigms of psychophysics(i.e.,the method of adjustment,constant stimuli,and limits).Conclusion:As the outcomes of different tasks with respect to various body parts show no associations(i.e.,proprioceptive accuracy is characterized by site-specificity and method-specificity),the appropriate measurement method for the task needs to be chosen based on theoretical considerations and/or ecological validity.

m TOR signaling in liver regeneration: Rapamycin combined with growth factor treatment

AIm: To investigate the effects of mammalian target of rapamycin(mT OR) inhibition on liver regeneration and autophagy in a surgical resection ***: C57BL/6 mice were subjected to a 70% partial hepatectomy(PH) and treated intraperitoneally every 24 h with a combination of the m TOR inhibitor rapamycin(2.5 mg/kg per day) and the steroid dexamethasone(2.0 mg/kg per day) in phosphate bufferedsaline(PBS) or with PBS alone as vehicle control. In the immunosuppressant group, part of the group was treated subcutaneously 4 h prior to and 24 h after PH with a combination of human recombinant interleukin 6(IL-6; 500 μg/kg per day) and hepatocyte growth factor(HgF; 100 μg/kg per day) in PBS. Animals were sacrificed 2, 3 or 5 d after PH and liver tissue and blood were collected for further analysis. Immunohistochemical staining for 5-Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine(Brd U) was used to quantify hepatocyte proliferation. Western blotting was used to detect hepatic microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3(LC3)-Ⅱ protein expression as a marker for autophagy. Hepatic gene expression levels of proliferation-, inflammation- and angiogenesisrelated genes were examined by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and serum bilirubin and transaminase levels were analyzed at the clinical chemical core facility of the Erasmus mC-University medical ***: m TOR inhibition significantly suppressed regeneration, shown by decreased hepatocyte proliferation(2% vs 12% Brd U positive hepatocyte nuclei at day 2, P ght reconstitution(63% vs 76% of initial total liver weight at day 3, P = 0.04), and furthermore increased serum transaminase levels(aspartate aminotransferase 641 U/L vs 185 U/L at day 2, P = 0.02). Characteristics of allergic colitis in breast-fed infants in the absence of cow's milk allergy

AIm: To investigate the characteristics of mucosal le-sions and their relation to laboratory data and long-term follow up in breast-fed infants with allergic colitis. mETHODS: In this study 31 breast-fed infants were prospectively evaluated (mean age, 17.4 wk) whose rectal bleeding had not ceased after a maternal elimi-nation diet for cow's milk. Thirty-four age-matched and breast-fed infants (mean age, 16.9 wk) with no rectal bleeding were enrolled for laboratory testing as con-trols. Laboratory findings, colonoscopic and histological characteristics were prospectively evaluated in infants with rectal bleeding. Long-term follow-up with differ-ent nutritional regimes (L-amino-acid based formula or breastfeeding) was also included. RESULTS: Iron deficiency, peripheral eosinophilia andthrombocytosis were significantly higher in patients with allergic colitis in comparison to controls (8.4±3.2 μmol/L vs 13.7±4.7 μmol/L, Pg/L vs 0.33±0.17 g/L, Pg/L vs 376±89 g/L, Pmphonodular hyperplasia or aphthous ulceration were present in 83% of patients. Twenty-two patients were given L-amino acid-based formula and 8 contin-ued the previous feeding. Time to cessation of rectal bleeding was shorter in the special formula feeding group (mean, 1.4 wk; range, 0.5-3 wk) when com-pared with the breast-feeding group (mean, 5.3 wk; range, 2-9 wk). Nevertheless, none of the patients ex-hibited rectal bleeding at the 3-mo visit irrespective of the type of feeding. Peripheral eosinophilia and cessa-tion of rectal bleeding after administration of elemental formula correlated with a higher density of mucosal eosinophils. CONCLUSION: Infant hematochezia, after cow's milk allergy exclusion, is generally a benign and probably self-limiting disorder despite marked mucosal abnor-mality. Formula feeding results in shorter time to cessa-tion of rectal bleeding; however, breast-feeding should not be discouraged in long-lasting
