AIM To assess the relationship between the presence of toll-like receptor 4(TLR4) polymorphisms and bacterial infections in cirrhotic patients with ascites. METHODS We prospectively included consecutive patients with cirrhosis and ascites hospitalized during a 6-year period. Patients with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infection or any other immunodeficiency, patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma(beyond Milan's criteria) or any other condition determining poor short-term prognosis, and patients with a permanent urinary catheter were excluded. The presence of D299 G and/or T399 I TLR4 polymorphisms was determined by sequencing and related to the incidence and probability of bacterial infections, other complications of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and mortality during follow-up. A multivariate analysis to identify predictive variables of mortality in the whole series was performed. RESULTS We included 258 patients: 28(10.8%) were carriers of D299G and/or T399I TLR4 polymorphisms(polymorphism group) and 230 patients were not(wildtype group). The probability of developing any bacterial infection at one-year follow-up was 78% in the polymorphism group and 69% in the wild-type group(P = 0.54). The one-year probability of presenting infections caused by gram-negative bacilli(51% vs 44%, P = 0.68), infections caused by gram-positive cocci(49% vs 40%, P = 0.53), and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis(29% vs 34%, respectively, P = 0.99) did not differ between the two groups. The oneyear probability of transplant-free survival was 55% in the polymorphism group and 66% in the wild-type group(P = 0.15). Multivariate analysis confirmed that age, Child-Pugh score, active alcohol intake, previous hepatic encephalopathy, hepatocellular carcinoma and serum creatinine were associated with a higher risk of death during follow-up. A simple, efficient and low-cost methodology for the synthesis of α-aryl-α,β-unsaturated esters using paraformaldehyde as a source of carbon was developed. Factors that control reaction yields such as temperature, concentration and reaction time were evaluated. A mechanism is proposed based on experimental structures of the intermediates.

Plant Growth-Promoting Traits in Rhizobacteria of Heavy Metal-Resistant Plants and Their Effects on Brassica nigra Seed Germination

Phytoremediation is an emerging technology that uses plants and their associated microbes to clean up pollutants from the soil, water, and air. In order to select the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria （PGPR） for phytoremediation of heavy metal contamination, 60 bacterial strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of two endemic plants, Prosopis laevigata and Spharealcea angustifolia, in a heavy metal-contaminated zone in Mexico. These rhizobacterial strains were characterized for the growth at different pH and salinity, extracellular enzyme production, solubilization of phosphate, heavy metal resistance, and plant growth-promoting （PGP） traits, including production of siderophores and indol-3-acetic acid （IAA）. Overall, the obtained rhizobacteria presented multiple PGP traits. These rhizoba^teria were also resistant to high levels of heavy metals （including As as a metalloid）（up to 480 mmol L-1 As（V）, 24 mmol L-1 Pb（II）, 21 mmol L-1 Cu（II）, and 4.5 mmol L-1 Zn（II））. Seven rhizobacterial strains with the best PGP traits were identified as members of Alcaligenes, Bacillus, Curtobacterium, and Microbacterium, and were selected for further bioassay. The inoculation of Brassica nigra seeds with Microbacteriurn sp. CE3R2, Microbacterium sp. nE1R5, Curtobacterium sp. nM1R1, and Microbacterium sp. nM3E9 facilitated the root development; they significantly improved the B. nigra seed germination and root growth in the presence of heavy metals such as 2.2 mmol L-1 Zn（II）. The rhizobacterial strains isolated in the present study had the potential to be used as efficient bioinoculants in phytorremediation of soils contaminated with multiple heavy metals.

Changes in balance ability,power output,and stretch-shortening cycle utilisation after two high-intensity intermittent training protocols in endurance runners

Purpose：This study aimed to describe the acute effects of 2 different high-intensity intermittent trainings（HIITs） on postural control,countermovement jump（CMJ）,squat jump（SJ）,and stretch-shortening cycle（SSC） utilisation,and to compare the changes induced by both protocols in those variables in endurance ***：Eighteen recreationally trained endurance runners participated in this study and were tested on 2 occasions：10 runs of 400 m with 90 s recovery between running bouts（10×400 m）,and 40 runs of 100 m with 30 s recovery between runs（40 × 100 m）.Heart rate was monitored during both HIITs;blood lactate accumulation and rate of perceived exertion were recorded after both *** jump ability（CMJ and SJ） and SSC together with postural control were also controlled during both ***：Repeated measures analysis revealed a significan improvement in CMJ and SJ during 10 × 400 m（p〈0.05）,whilst no significan changes were observed during 40×100 *** related to SSC did not experience significan changes during any of the *** for postural control,no significan changes were observed in the 40×100 m protocol,whilst significan impairments were observed during the 10×400 m protocol（p〈0.05）.Conclusion：A protocol with a higher number of shorter runs（40×100 m） induced different changes in those neuromuscular parameters than those with fewer and longer runs（10×400 m）.Whereas the 40×100 m protocol did not cause any significan changes in vertical jump ability,postural control or SSC utilisation,the 10×400 m protocol impaired postural control and caused improvements in vertical jumping tests.

Background： nutrition is one of the most important factors that affect animal performance, and it therefore also impacts on financial results in beef systems. In this way, finding the best strategy for feeding supplements is of paramount importance. Aiming to evaluate the effect of supplement feeding strategies for beef cows in the last third of gestation, two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, 35 pregnant nellore cows were assigned to a completely randomized design with four treatments： control, which received no supplement; supplementation for the last 30 d of gestation（30-d; 3.0 kg/d）; supplementation for the last 60 d of gestation（60-d; 1.5 kg/d）; or supplementation for the last 90 d of gestation（90-d; 1.0 kg/d）. All supplemented treatments received the same total amount of supplement throughout the experiment： 90 kg（20% of crude protein）. A second experiment（Experiment 2） was delineated to evaluate the effects of the amounts offered in Experiment 1 on intake and metabolism. Four multiparous pregnant nellore cows were assigned to a 4 × 4 Latin square design, with periods of15 d ***： There was a linear effect of the number of days of supplementation on calving body weight（BW; P 〈 0.05）and a quadratic effect on BW change from parturition to d 31 post-calving（P 〈 0.05）, with cows on the 60-d strategy losing less BW post-calving. no difference was found in offspring birth BW（P 〉 0.10）. A significant linear effect on interval from parturition to conception（P 〈 0.05） was observed, with the highest calving to conception interval being observed in the 90-d strategy. Sea Level Variation at Western Coast of Mexican Pacific in Response to Tsunamigenic Earthquakes （2012-2015）

Tsunamis in Mexico are a real threat, still unknown to many, mainly by people living in or visiting the coast. The Tsunami Warning Center in Mexico recently created （September 19, 2011） monitors earthquakes and sea level change caused by these same. Sea level on the west coast of the Mexican Pacific was analyzed after the occurrence of local, regional and distant earthquakes, in order to determine the existence of an anomaly due to the quake itself. Variations in sea level due to local registered earthquakes Mw 6.0 to 7.4 range was from 0.10 to 0.30 m; for regional earthquakes of Mw 7.3 and 8.2 were 0.12 and 0.22 m respectively and to the distant earthquake of Mw 8.0 recorded in Solomon Islands, the change in sea level of the maximum recorded was 0.20 m in Manzanillo, Colima. It is important to know that earthquakes whether local, regional or distant whose magnitudes are in the range specified here, did not present a risk to the Mexican coast, but do not rely, having to monitor variations in sea level that earthquakes can produce and be aware that you may perhaps occur as a tsunami in Indonesia in 2004 or Japan in 2011.
