The Effect of Tool Construction and Cutting Parameters on Surface Roughness and Vibration in Turning of AISI 1045 Steel Using Taguchi Method

This paper presents an experimental investigation focused on identifying the effects of cutting conditions and tool construction on the surface roughness and natural frequency in turning of AISI1045 steel. Machining experiments were carried out at the lathe using carbide cutting insert coated with TiC and two forms of cutting tools made of AISI 5140 steel. Three levels for spindle speed, depth of cut, feed rate and tool overhang were chosen as cutting variables. The Taguchi method L9 orthogonal array was applied to design of experiment. By the help of signal-to-noise ratio and analysis of variance, it was concluded that spindle speed has the significant effect on the surface roughness, while tool overhang is the dominant factor affecting natural frequency for both cutting tools. In addition, the optimum cutting conditions for surface roughness and natural frequency were found at different levels. Finally, confirmation experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the Taguchi method in optimizing the cutting parameters for surface roughness and natural frequency.

The generation of high-power laser pulses using a compact hetero-integrated assembly based on a semiconductor laser with a dual-element composite 2 μm × 100 μm aperture and a compact heterothyristor switch is demonstrated. The achieved peak optical power was 33 W with a pulse duration of 3 ns at a thyristor operating voltage of 55 V. The leading edge of the laser pulse turn-on was 50 ps to a power level of 24.7 W, and the turn-on delay between the elements of the composite aperture was 160 ps.

Atomic Structure of the Pt Surface after Bombardment with Ar⁺ Ions (E ~ 30 keV)

The results of the modification of the atomic structure of the Pt surface after bombardment by accelerated beams of Ar+ ions are presented. Field ion microscopy was used to study the irradiated surface on an atomic scale. From the analysis of the ion contrast of the atomically clean surface of platinum after bombardment with Ar+, a large number of radiation defects of various types were found. Individual vacancies, interstitial atoms, Frenkel pairs, depleted zones, nanoclusters of displaced atoms, etc. have been registered. It has been established that the depth of the near-surface volume of the irradiated metal with defects (except for zero-dimensional defects) is 1 - 1.5 nm for the bombardment regime: F = 1016 ion/cm2 and E = 30 keV.

Modified Ceria-Zirconia Fluorite-Like Catalysts for the Combustion of Methane

For dispersed ceria-zirconia-based solid solutions prepared via the polymerized complex method and annealed at 700 ℃, effects of bulk doping by Ca, Mn, Co, Bi or Nb cations and surface modification by Mn and Pt on their structural features, surface/bulk oxygen reactivity and catalytic activity in methane combustion are considered. With up to 20 mol% doping, a structural type of homogeneous solid solutions of anion-deficient fluorite with disordered anion vacancies is formed. Doping by transition metal cations or Pt increases the mobility and reactivity of the surface/bulk oxygen. A broad variation in specific rates of methane combustion for the studied systems was observed, suggesting structural sensitivity of this reaction. In general, there is no universal relationship between the oxygen mobility, the reactivity and the catalytic activity in methane combustion, which is explained by the factor of specific methane activation on surface active sites. For the Pt-promoted samples, Pt efficiency in methane activation depends on the Pt-support interaction, and the most favorable ones being mixed Pt/MnOx and Pt/NbOx clusters on the surface of the supports that exhibit high lattice oxygen mobilities.

Role of Electromagnetic Fluctuations in Organic Electronics

Thin organic films find expanding applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices, biotechnology,food packing, and for many other purposes. Among other factors, the stability of films with a thickness below a micrometer is determined by the zero-point and thermal fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. These fluctuations result in the van der Waals and Casimir free energy and forces between a film and a substrate. The fluctuationinduced force may be both attractive and repulsive making the film either more or less stable, respectively. Here, we review recently obtained results for the Casimir free energy of both freestanding and deposited on the metallic and dielectric substrates peptide films. We also perform computations for the free energy of the peptide films deposited on a silica glass substrate in the region of parameters where this free energy vanishes. Possible applications of the obtained results are discussed.
