Distribution and Abundance of Pelagic Tunicates in the North Yellow Sea

In this paper, the distribution patterns and abundance of pelagic tunicates in the North Yellow Sea of China during the period 2006-2007 were analyzed. Zooplankton samples were obtained with vertical towing from bottom to surface using a WP2 plankton net(200 μm mesh size; mouth area: 0.25 m2). Five species belonging to two classes were identified: Oikopleura dioica, O. longicauda and Fritillaria borealis belonging to class Appendicularia; Salpa fusiformis and Doliolum denticulatum of class Thaliacea. O. dioica and O. longicauda were the dominant species, occurring in the samples of all four seasons, with different distribution patterns. Their maximum abundance were 1664.7 ind. m-3(spring) and 1031.7 ind. m-3(spring) respectively. Following Oikopleura spp. were D. denticulatum, which was found only in autumn with an average abundance of 149.6 ind. m-3, and S. fusiformis, which was detected all the year long except for autumn with low abundance(max. abundance 289.4 ind. m-3 in summer). Only a very small amount of F. borealis was detected in summer samples, with an average abundance of 2.7 ind. m-3. The relationship between tunicates abundances and the environmental factors was analyzed using the stepwise regression model for each species. The variation of appendicularian abundance showed a significant correlation with the surface water temperature and with the concentration of Chl-a. No relationship was found between tunicates abundance and salinity, likely due to the slight changes in surface salinity of the studied area during the four seasons. Salps abundance and that of doliolids were significantly correlated to bottom water temperature, indicating that these two species(S. fusiformis and D. denticulatum) migrate vertically in the water column. In particular D. denticulatum, known to be a warm water species, showed not only an important correlation with water temperature, but also a spatial distribution connected to the warm currents in the North Yellow Sea. Robotic colonoscopes could potentially provide a comfortable, less painful andsafer alternative to standard colonoscopy. Recent exciting developments in thisfield are pushing the boundaries to what is possible in the future. This articleprovides a comprehensive review of the current work in robotic colonoscopesincluding self-propelled, steerable and disposable endoscopes that could bealternatives to standard colonoscopy. We discuss the advantages and disadvantagesof these systems currently in development and highlight the technicalreadiness of each system to help the reader understand where and when suchsystems may be available for routine clinical use and get an idea of where and inwhich situation they can best be deployed.

A slug capturing method in unconventional scenarios: The 5ESCARGOTS code applied to non-Newtonian fluids, high viscous oils and complex geometries

Previous work showed that a one-dimensional,hyperbolic,transient five-equation two-fluid model can predict automatically the formation,growth,and subsequent development of slugs in horizontal and near-horizontal *** method was implemented in a finite volume numerical scheme e called 5ESCARGOTS *** with experimental data showed that it can be used to predict the flow pattern and statistical characteristics(slug velocity,length,and frequency).However,the capabilities of this approach have been tested only for water-air flows in a straight horizontal *** this work,we validate the application of the code to some unconventional ***,we test the possibility of slug capturing approach to describe and predict the relevant features of air/high viscosity oils or air/non-Newtonian fluids *** between some slug characteristics and empirical correlations,available in literature,are ***,we move from simple geometries toward more complex conditions that may be representative of actual application cases,also employing high viscous oils as liquid *** against experimental data shows results in reasonable agreement.

TICA: Transcriptional Interaction and Coregulation Analyzer

Transcriptional regulation is critical to cellular processes of all organisms. Regulatory mechanisms often involve more than one transcription factor(TF) from different families, binding together and attaching to the DNA as a single complex. However, only a fraction of the regulatory partners of each TF is currently known. In this paper, we present the Transcriptional Interaction and Coregulation Analyzer(TICA), a novel methodology for predicting heterotypic physical interaction of TFs. TICA employs a data-driven approach to infer interaction phenomena from chromatin immunoprecipitation and sequencing(ChIP-seq) data. Its prediction rules are based on the distribution of minimal distance couples of paired binding sites belonging to different TFs which are located closest to each other in promoter regions. Notably, TICA uses only binding site information from input ChIP-seq experiments, bypassing the need to do motif calling on sequencing data. We present our method and test it on ENCOde ChIP-seq datasets, using three cell lines as reference including HepG2, GM12878, and K562. TICA positive predictions on ENCOde ChIP-seq data are strongly enriched when compared to protein complex(CORUM) and functional interaction(BioGRID) databases. We also compare TICA against both motif/ChIP-seq based methods for physical TF–TF interaction prediction and published literature. Based on our results, TICA offers significant specificity(average 0.902) while maintaining a good recall(average 0.284) with respect to CORUM, providing a novel technique for fast analysis of regulatory effect in cell lines. Furthermore, predictions by TICA are complementary to other methods for TF–TF interaction prediction(in particular, TACO and CENTDIST). Thus, combined application of these prediction tools results in much improved sensitivity in detecting TF–TF interactions compared to TICA alone(sensitivity of 0.526 when combining TICA with TACO and 0.585 when combining with CENTDIST)with little compromise

A multidisciplinary approach in recognizing seep-carbonates:A case study from the Loiano Formation(late Eocene)in the northern Apennines(Italy)

Carbonate deposits related to active seeps are documented along most continental margins and are characterized by peculiar seep-related facies and by chemical(isotope signature),paleontological and mineralogical *** fossil analogues are recognized all over the world by the same features and occurred since the beginning of *** this paper,we present a new seep outcrop(Castagneto village,Reggio Emilia,northern Italy)belonging to the late Eocene Loiano Formation which,to our knowledge,is in Italy the most ancient seep deposit with not-reworked chemosymbiotic *** outcrop can be roughly divided into two portions,a northern part showing abundant presence of macrofossils in silty carbonate matrix and subhorizontal subdivisions,and a southern part,where macrofossils are almost absent,characterized by sub-vertical internal subdivisions and a clear vertical structure consisting of the rhythmic alternation of light and dark *** analysis of samples from the southern portion showed the occurrence of authigenic calcite and pyrite,the latter with a peculiar framboidal *** feature,together with the occurrence of chemosymbiotic species and~(13)C isotope depletion,suggests possible hydrocarbon-rich fluid-related genesis and provides useful criteria for identifying hydrocarbon-rich fluid-related deposits in geologic units.

Endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR)is the technique of choice for large colonic laterally spreading tumors(LSTs)[1].The use of a dye-containing fluid solution for submucosal injection is necessary for a better depiction of polyp margins,deep wall layers,and possible residual tissue[2].In recent years,dedicated viscous solutions have been registered for gastrointestinal(GI)endoscopy together with other routinely used non-dedicated viscous solutions,such as hyaluronic acid or Gelofusine,Eleview(Aries Pharmaceutical,CA,USA).

N-acetyltransferase 2: Slow, intermediate or fast? A booming question of the molecular epidemiology in cancer research

Throughout history, humanity has referred to reactions occurring with food, plants and, recently, medicines or drugs. The increase in pulmonary tuberculosis cases and the availability of treatment showed that genetic human differences can interfere in the capacity to metabolize drugs. There are remarkable genetic polymorphisms of N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) activity that have been associated with different levels of susceptibility to developing many kinds of cancers. This review considers the field as an open window for the application of molecular epidemiology tools that led to the development of pharmacogenomics. We cover historical data and the most recent knowledge about NAT2 genetic polymorphisms and its distribution in different populations, which is an important concept being incorporated in epidemiological studies of cancer risk. We present up to date information about these studies, including meta-analysis based on the NAT2 distribution in different types of cancer. A critical broad at advances in NAT2 research, high-lighting recent studies related to NAT2 alleles in cancer susceptibility. Although there are multifactorial aspects involved in cancer risk, the variability in NAT2 allelic frequency can be related to carcinogenesis through alterations in the metabolic rate after exposure to carcinogens.

Closed-loop hydrometallurgical treatment of end-of-life lithium ion batteries: Towards zero-waste process and metal recycling in advanced batteries

This work presents an enhanced hydrometallurgical process for recycling lithium ion batteries. First, endof-life batteries were processed in a physical pre-treatment plant to obtain a representative electrode material. The resulting leachate was purified forth by iron-precipitation, liquid–liquid extractions, and an innovative Li–Na separation, in order to obtain valuable products. These products include high-grade graphite, cobalt oxide(Co3O4, purity 83%), cobalt oxalate(CoC2O4, purity 96%), nickel oxide(Ni O, purity89%), and lithium carbonate(Li2CO3, purity 99.8%). The recovery rate was quantitative for graphite, between 80% and 85% for cobalt depending on the nature of the recovery method, 90% for nickel, and 72%for lithium. Secondary streams were also valorized to obtain sodium sulfate(Na2SO4, purity 96%), and MnCoFe2O4 magnetic nano-sorbents according to the zero-waste concept. In order to close the loop, recycled Co3O4 and NiO were used as conversion-type anode materials for advanced lithium ion batteries showing promising performances.

We reported a female patient with unrecognized celiac disease and multiple extra intestinal manifestations, mainly related to a deranged immune function, including macroamilasemia, macrolipasemia, IgA nephropathy,thyroiditis, and anti-b2-glicoprotein-1 antibodies, that disappeared or improved after the implementation of a gluten-free diet.

Pharmacokinetic drug interactions in liver disease:Anupdate

Inhibition and induction of drug-metabolizing enzymes are the most frequent and dangerous drugdrug interactions. They are an important cause of serious adverse events that have often resulted in early termination of drug development or withdrawal of drugs from the market. Management of such interactions by dose adjustment in clinical practice is extremely difficult because of the wide interindividual variability in their magnitude. This review examines the genetic, physiological, and environmental factors responsible for this variability, focusing on an important but so far neglected cause of variability, liver functional status. Clinical studies have shown that liver disease causes a reduction in the magnitude of interactions due to enzyme inhibition, which is proportional to the degree of liver function impairment. The effect of liver dysfunction varies quantitatively according to the nature, reversible or irreversible, of the inhibitory interaction. The magnitude of reversible inhibition is more drastically reduced and virtually vanishes in patients with advanced hepatocellular insufficiency. Two mechanisms, in order of importance, are responsible for this reduction: decreased hepatic uptake of the inhibitory drug and reduced enzyme expression. The extent of irreversible inhibitory interactions is only partially reduced, as it is only influenced by the decreased expression of the inhibited enzyme. Thus, for appropriate clinical management of inhibitory drug interactions, both the liver functional status and the mechanism of inhibition must be taken into consideration. Although the inducibility of drugmetabolizing enzymes in liver disease has long been studied, very conflicting results have been obtained, mainly because of methodological differences. Taken together, the results of early animal and human studies indicated that enzyme induction is substantially preserved in compensated liver cirrhosis, whereas no definitive conclusion as to whether it is significant
