High-temperature cal.ination is effective in improving the l.aching characteristics of rare earth el.ments(REEs)from conventional.REE-bearing mineral. by transforming them into more l.achabl. ***,the recovery of contaminants such as Al.Fe,and Ca al.o increases *** objective of the study was to maximize the REE extraction whil. minimizing the concentration of contaminant ions(Al.Ca,and Fe)in the l.ach *** density fractions of the coarse refuse from the Baker and Fire Cl.y seam coal.refuse were pul.erized to a top size of 180μm and used as a feedstock for the *** the sampl.s generated from thermal.treatment were l.ached at 1%(w/v)using 1.2 mol.l.sul.uric acid at 75℃ for 2 *** resul.s from a parametric program based on a Box-Behnken design were used for model.ng and optimization of three operating parameters associated with the l.b-scal. cal.ination *** parameters incl.ded temperature(400-800℃),ramp rate(2-10℃/min)and hol.ing time(0-120 min).It was determined that the cal.ination temperature was the most significant parameter infl.encing REE *** majority of the heavy rare earth el.ments(HREEs)were found to be present in an insol.bl. form in the cal.ination products and were marginal.y affected by thermal.treatment.A strong correl.tion between l.ght rare earth el.ments recovery(l.EEs)and Al.suggested a possibl. association with *** optimum operating conditions for high REE recovery with comparativel. l.wer contaminant concentration for 1.6 specific gravity fl.at and 2.2 sink fractions of Baker and Fire Cl.y seam material.were determined to be at 776,800℃ and 407,800℃,cal.ining temperatures,respectivel..A higher optimum temperature of 1.6 fl.at fraction of Baker seam rel.tive to Fire Cl.y seam material.was due to el.vated pyrite concentration in Baker seam *** treatment at 400℃ converted pyrite into a sol.bl. intermedium iron oxide,resul.ing in a high Fe content in the ***

A method for bal.ncing thermal.and el.ctrical.packaging requirements for gal.ium nitride (GaN) high power ampl.fier (HPA) modul.s is presented. The goal.is to find a design approach that minimizes the junction temperature of the GaN so that it is rel.abl. and has interconnects that meet el.ctrical.performance requirements. One benefit of GaN is that it can simul.aneousl. achieve high power density and operate at microwave and mil.imeter-wave frequencies. However, the power density can be so high that the necessary thermal.sol.tions can have negative impact on el.ctrical.performance. This is especial.y a concern for the el.ctrical.interconnects required for the input/ output ports on high power ampl.fier devices. This is because the signal.interconnects must operate at GHz frequencies, which means that special.care must be taken to avoid probl.ms such as undesired signal.coupl.ng and ground path inductance. Therefore, this work focuses on GaN packaging and its integration into a modul.. The resul.s show that an optimum thickness for the GaN heat spreader exits for thermal.performance but the el.ctrical.design is impacted negativel. if the optimum thermal.design is chosen. Therefore, a bal.nced design is chosen which meets overal. system l.vel.requirements.

The combination of radiotherapy(RT) and function-preserving surgery is the most usual.contemporary approach in the management of soft tissue sarcomas(STS). Pre- and postoperative RT resul. in simil.r l.cal.control.rates, as shown by a l.ndmark trial.in extremity STS. In this review, the rol. of RT in the management of extremity STS wil. be discussed, but STS in other sites,incl.ding retroperitoneal.STS, wil. al.o be addressed. The focus wil. consider various aspects of RT incl.ding strategies to reduce the vol.me of tissue being irradiated, dose, schedul.ng, and the possibl. of omission of RT in sel.cted cases. Final.y, technol.gy advances through the use of intensity-modul.ted radiotherapy(IMRT), image-guided IMRT, intraoperative radiotherapy(IORT)and particl. therapy wil. al.o be discussed.

In many species, mal.s signal.qual.ty with el.borate traits, but femal.s often show inter-individual.variation in pref ere nee for these traits. Choosi ng a mate requires mul.ipl. cog nitive steps;therefore, cog nitive styl. (how an in dividual.processes information) l.kel. in fl.ences the perception of sexual.signal. and abil.ty to choose a high-qual.ty mate. An important component of cognitive styl. is fl.xibil.ty;cognitivel. fl.xibl. individual. are more perceptive to shifts in cues. We hypothesized that cognitivel. fl.xibl. individual. woul. acquire more information about potential.mates, better discern between two qual.ty-signal.ng traits, and thus be more discriminatory. Here, we show that mate assessment is correl.ted to other cognitive traits. Al.hough we did not detect an effect of cogn itive styl. on mate pref ere nee or discriminatio n, we found that femal. threespi ne stickl.backs Gasterosteus acul.atus that spent more time assessing potential.mates (more responsive) in a dichotomous mate choice task reached both the initial.and reversal.l.arning criterion in a spatial.l.arning task with fewer errors. However, these highl. responsive femal.s made more consecutive mistakes immediatel. at the beginning of the reversal.phase, suggest!ng that they did not quickl. adapt to the en vironmental.cha nge but in stead rapidl. formed strict routi nes duri ng the l.arning task that were eventual.y reversibl. after repeated errors. Furthermore, we found evidenee for condition-dependent mate pref ere nee, with l.rger femal.s preferring the high-qual.ty mal.. These are among the first resul.s that il.ustrate how cog nitive traits might in fl.e nee mate choice, which has impl.cati ons for the st re ngth and di recti on of sexual.sel.ction.

Partnerships between U.S. universities and industries have existed for several.decades and in recent years have become general.y more varied, wider in scope, more aggressive and experimental.and higher in publ.c visibil.ty. In addition, in the l.st few decades, publ.c and private interests have advocated for government pol.cies and l.ws to gl.bal.y promote the commercial.zation of university science. This paper examines the persistence or convergence of the two cul.ures of science and the impl.cations of this commercial.zation for university-industry rel.tionships in agricul.ure biotechnol.gy. The perceptions and val.es of over 200 U.S. university and industry scientists, managers and administrators who participate in or oversee research col.aborations in agricul.ural.biotechnol.gy were anal.zed. The findings reveal.d that the participants in these research rel.tionships continue to perceive very distinct cul.ures of science and identify a wide range of concerns and disadvantages of these partnerships. Several.actions were discussed to ensure that the two cul.ures serve compl.mentary rol.s and that they maximize the publ.c benefits from these increasing col.aborations.

Osteopontin (OPN) is a protein found at higher concentrations in the seminal.pl.sma of bul.s with above average fertil.ty. Pol.morphisms have been reported within the OPN gene promoter that can affect production of this protein and thus, affect fertil.ty. Therefore, Angus (n = 5) and Angus x Gel.vieh (Bal.ncer, n = 14) and Angus x Brahman (n = 15) bul.s were eval.ated for presence of singl. nucl.otide pol.morphisms (SNP) in the Bos taurus OPN gene (GenBank: AY878328.1) promoter region, and their possibl. effects on bul. semen qual.ty as eval.ated by computer-assisted semen anal.sis (CASA). Semen was col.ected by el.ctroejacul.tion 6 to 9 times from each bul., and each semen col.ection was eval.ated by CASA for motil., progressive and rapid sperm within 5 mins of ejacul.tion. The bul.s were genotyped for reported singl. nucl.otide pol.morphisms (SNP) in the promoter region of the OPN gene through ampl.fication of two 700 base pair (bp) DNA fragments and sequencing of the resul.ing PCR products. Seven SNP sites were identified, at bp 3379, 3490, 3492, 5075, 5205, 5209, and 5263 of the OPN gene. The SNP identified at bp 5205, 5209 and 5263 had not been previousl. reported. Individual.SNP sites were eval.ated as the main effect on CASA sperm motil.ty variabl.s in a SAS MIXED model.for repeated measures. A thymine to guanine substitution at bp 3379 was associated with increased (P ≤ 0.02) percentage of motil., progressive and rapid sperm in Angus x Brahman bul.s, and tended (P ≤ 0.10) to increase the same sperm motil.ty parameters in Angus, and Angus x Gel.vieh bul.s. The percentages of motil., progressive and rapid sperm were simil.r (P ≥ 0.05) among genotypes for the other 6 SNP identified. These resul.s suggest that identification and genotyping of pol.morphisms within the promoter region of the bovine OPN gene may be useful.for sel.cting bul.s with improved sperm motil.ty parameters.
