Strain is a powerful tool to modify the optical properties of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides like MoS_(2),MoSe_(2),WS_(2) and WSe_(2).In this work we provide a thorough description of the technical details to perform uniaxial strain measurements on these two-dimensional semiconductors and we provide a straightforward calibration method to determine the amount of applied strain with high *** then employ reflectance spectroscopy to analyze the strain tunability of the electronic properties of single-,bi-and tri-layer MoS_(2),MoSe_(2),WS_(2) and WSe_(2).Finally,we quantify the flake-to-flake variability by analyzing 15 different single-layer MoS_(2) flakes.

Here,we propose a method to determine the thickness of the most common transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) placed on the surface of transparent stamps,used for the deterministic placement of two-dimensional materials,by analyzing the red,green and blue channels of transmission-mode optical microscopy images of the *** particular,the blue channel transmittance shows a large and monotonic thickness dependence,making it a very convenient probe of the flake *** method proves to be robust given the small flake-to-flake variation and the insensitivity to doping changes of *** also tested the method for MoSe2,WS2 and *** results provide a reference guide to identify the number of layers of this family of materials on transparent substrates only using optical microscopy.

We present a low-cost and easy-to-implement technique to fabricate large-area WS_(2) photodetector devices onto transparent and flexible polycarbonate *** method relies on the deposition of large-area(in the cm scale)thin films(~30 nm thick)of WS_(2) by a recently introduced abrasion-induced *** electrical contacts are then deposited by thermal evaporation through a shadow *** photodetectors present well-balanced performances with an good trade-off between responsivity(up to 144 mA/W at a source-drain voltage of 10 V and illumination power of 1μW)and response time(down to~70µs)and a detectivity value of 10^(8) *** found that the devices perform very reversibly upon several illumination and straining cycles and we found a moderate device-to-device variation.

Improving Scalability of Cloud Monitoring Through PCA-Based Clustering of Virtual Machines

Cloud computing has recently emerged as a leading paradigm to allow customers to run their applications in virtualized large-scale data centers. Existing solutions for monitoring and management of these infrastructures consider virtual machines （VMs） as independent entities with their own characteristics. However, these approaches suffer from scalability issues due to the increasing number of VMs in modern cloud data centers. We claim that scalability issues can bc addressed by leveraging the similarity among VMs behavior in terms of resource usage patterns. In this paper we propose an automated methodology to cluster VMs starting from the usage of multiple resources, assuming no knowledge of the services executed on them. The innovative contribution of the proposed methodology is the use of the statistical technique known as principal component analysis （PCA） to automatically select the most relevant information to cluster similar VMs. We apply the methodology to two case studies, a virtualized testbed and a real enterprise data center. In both case studies, the automatic data selection based on PCA allows us to achieve high performance, with a percentage of correctly clustered VMs between 80% and 100% even for short time series （1 day） of monitored data. Furthermore, we estimate the potential reduction in the amount of collected data to demonstrate how our proposal may address the scalability issues related to monitoring and management in cloud computing data centers.

Background Leaf area index(LAI)is a key indicator for the assessment of the canopy’s processes such as net primary production and *** this reason,the LAI is often used as a key input parameter in ecosystem services’modeling,which is emerging as a critical tool for steering upcoming urban reforestation ***,LAI field measures are extremely time-consuming and require remarkable economic and human *** this context,spectral indices computed using high-resolution multispectral satellite imagery like Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8,may represent a feasible and economic solution for estimating the LAI at the city ***,as far as we know,only a few studies have assessed the potential of Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data doing so in Mediterranean forest *** fill such a gap,we assessed the performance of 10 spectral indices derived from Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data in estimating the LAI,using field measurements collected with the LI-COR LAI 2200c as a *** hypothesized that Sentinel-2 data,owing to their finer spatial and spectral resolution,perform better in estimating vegetation’s structural parameters compared to Landsat *** We found that Landsat 8-derived models have,on average,a slightly better performance,with the best model(the one based on NDVI)showing an R^(2) of 0.55 and NRMSE of 14.74%,compared to R^(2) of 0.52 and NRMSE of 15.15%showed by the best Sentinel-2 model,which is based on the *** models were affected by spectrum saturation for high LAI values(e.g.,above 5).Conclusion In Mediterranean ecosystems,Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data produce moderately accurate LAI estimates during the peak of the growing ***,the uncertainty introduced using satellite-derived LAI in ecosystem services’assessments should be systematically accounted for.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest toward Blast Furnace Gas （BFG） as a low-grade energy source for industrial furnaces. This paper considers the revamping of a galvanic plant furnace converted to BFG from natural gas. In the design of the new system, the ejector on the exhaust line is a critical component. This paper studies the flow behavior of the ejector using a Computational Fluid Dynamics （CFD） analysis. The CFD model is based on a 3D representation of the ejector, using air and exhaust gases as working fluids. This paper is divided in three parts. In the first part, the galvanic plant used as case study is presented and discussed, in the second part the CFD approach is outlined, and in the third part the CFD approach is validated using experimental data and the numerical results are presented and discussed. Different Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes （RANS） turbulence models （k-to SST and k-e Realizable） are evaluated in terms of convergence capability and accuracy in predicting the pressure drop along the ejector. Suggestions for future optimization of the system are also provided.

Adsorption using solid sorbents has the potential to complement or replace current absorption technol- ogy, because of its low energy requirements. Among the commercially available adsorbent materials, attention is focused on activated carbons because they are easily regenerable by reason of their low heat of adsorption. These sorbents are generally available in the form of fine powders. Sound-assisted fluidization can process large amounts of fine powders, promoting and enhancing CO2 capture on fine sorbents, because it maximizes gas-solid contact. Temperature swing adsorption （TSA）, consisting of inducing sor- bent regeneration and CO2 recovery by appropriate temperature increase and gas purge, is one of the most promising techniques. This study investigates the CO2 desorption process by TSA in a sound-assisted flu- idized bed of fine activated carbon. Desorption tests were performed under ordinary and sound-assisted fluidization conditions to assess the capability of sound to promote and enhance the desorption efficiency in terms of CO2 recovery, CO2 purity, and desorption time. The results show that the application of sound results in higher desorption rates, CO2 recovery and purity. Regular and stable desorption profiles can be obtained under sound-assisted fluidization conditions. This stability makes it possible to successfully realize a cyclic adsorption/desorption process.
