Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 in a Brazilian public hospital

BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has become a major health concern *** that context,the understanding of epidemiological and clinical features associated with the disease and its severity is crucial for the establishment of strategies aimed at disease control and *** To describe epidemiological features,signs,symptoms,and laboratory findings among severely ill COVID-19 patients from an inten-sive care unit in northeastern Brazil as well as to evaluate predictor factors for disease *** This is a prospective single-center study that evaluated 115 patients admitted to the intensive care unit in a northeastern Brazilian *** The patients had a median age of 65.60±15.78 *** was the most frequent symptom,affecting 73.9%of the patients,followed by cough(54.7%).Fever was reported in approximately one-third of patients and myalgia in 20.8%of the *** least two comorbidities were found in 41.7%of the patients,and hypertension was the most prevalent(57.3%).In addition,having two or more comorbidities was a predictor of mortality,and lower platelet count was positively associated with *** and vomiting were two symptoms that were predictors of death,and the presence of a cough was a protective *** This is the first report of a negative correlation between cough and death in severely ill severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-infected *** associations between comorbidities,advanced age,and low platelet count and the outcomes of the infection were similar to the results of previous studies,highlighting the relevance of these features.

Spinal cord injury results in the loss of sensory,motor,and autonomic functions,which almost always produces permanent physical ***,in the search for more effective treatments than those already applied for years,which are not entirely efficient,researches have been able to demonstrate the potential of biological strategies using biomaterials to tissue manufacturing through bioengineering and stem cell therapy as a neuroregenerative approach,seeking to promote neuronal recovery after spinal cord *** of these strategies has been developed and meticulously evaluated in several animal models with the aim of analyzing the potential of interventions for neuronal repair and,consequently,boosting functional *** the majority of experimental research has been conducted in rodents,there is increasing recognition of the importance,and need,of evaluating the safety and efficacy of these interventions in non-human primates before moving to clinical trials involving therapies potentially promising in *** article is a literature review from databases(PubMed,Science Direct,Elsevier,Scielo,Redalyc,Cochrane,and NCBI)from 10 years ago to date,using keywords(spinal cord injury,cell therapy,non-human primates,humans,and bioengineering in spinal cord injury).From 110 retrieved articles,after two selection rounds based on inclusion and exclusion criteria,21 articles were ***,this review arises from the need to recognize the experimental therapeutic advances applied in non-human primates and even humans,aimed at deepening these strategies and identifying the advantages and influence of the results on extrapolation for clinical applicability in humans.

Multicomponent alloys show intricate microstructure evolution,providing materials engineers with a nearly inexhaustible variety of solutions to enhance material *** microstructure evolution simulations are indispensable to exploit these *** simulations,however,require the handling of high-dimensional and prohibitively large data sets of thermodynamic quantities,of which the size grows exponentially with the number of elements in the alloy,making it virtually impossible to handle the effects of four or more *** this paper,we introduce the use of tensor completion for highdimensional data sets in materials science as a general and elegant solution to this *** show that we can obtain an accurate representation of the composition dependence of high-dimensional thermodynamic quantities,and that the decomposed tensor representation can be evaluated very efficiently in microstructure *** realization enables true multicomponent thermodynamic and microstructure modeling for alloy design.

depending on the magnitude and nature of a disaster,identifying the victims can be a complex task that requires coordinated work by disaster victim identification(DVI)teams based on pre-established ***,the analysis of fingerprints has been presented as a method to establish,when possible,the identity of the victims during the DVI *** study discusses the importance of this primary method of identification and the results obtained in four different disasters in which Brazilian DVI teams were involved:the Air France Flight AF447 plane crash in the Atlantic Ocean,floods and mudslides in the State of Rio de Janeiro,Brazil,the LaMia Flight 2933 plane crash in Colombia,and the tailings dam collapse in Brumadinho,***,we also report the use of the automatic fingerprint capture and identification system,called Alethia,developed by the Federal Police of Brazil and used in the victim identification process in the two latter events mentioned above.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States,with about 142820 new cases and 50830 deaths expected in *** disease(mCRC)remains a challenge for oncologists worldwide due to its potential ***,chemotherapy regimens containing 5-fluorouracil,leucovorin,oxaliplatin and irinotecan combinations are a standard of care in the metastatic ***,biological therapies involving vascular endothelial growth factor and epidermal growth factor receptor pathways,such as bevacizumab and cetuximab,have emerged as good option for improving mCRC patient ***,aflibercept plus standard chemotherapy has also been approved in second line regimen for mCRC *** review will discuss novel biological drugs and their indications for mCRC patients and will bring future perspectives in this regard.

Performance index: An expeditious tool to screen for improved drought resistance in the Lathyrus genus

Some species of the Lathyrus genus are among the most promising crops for marginal lands, with high resilience to drought, flood, and fungal diseases, combined with high yields and seed nutritional value. However, lack of knowledge on the mechanisms underlying its outstanding performance and methodologies to identify elite genotypes has hampered its proper use in breeding. Chlorophyl a fast fluorescence transient （JIP test）, was used to evaluate water deficit （WD） resistance in Lathyrus genus. Our results reveal unaltered photochemical values for al studied genotypes showing resistance to mild WD. Under severe WD, two Lathyrus sativus genotypes showed remarkable resilience maintaining the photochemical efficiency, contrary to other genotypes studied. Performance index （PIABS） is the best parameter to screen genotypes with improved performance and grain production under WD. Moreover, we found that JIP indices are good indicators of genotypic grain production under WD. Quantum yield of electron transport （wEo） and efficiency with which＆trapped excitons can move electrons further than QA （c0） revealed as important traits related to improved photosyn-thetic performance and should be exploited in future Lathyrus germplasm improvements. The JIP test herein described showed to be an expeditious tool to screen and to identify elite genotypes with improved drought resistance.

Easy preparation of multifunctional ternary PdNiP/C catalysts toward enhanced small organic molecule electro-oxidation and hydrogen evolution reactions

The small organic molecule electro-oxidation(OMEO) and the hydrogen evolution(HER) are two important half-reactions in direct liquid fuel cells(DLFCs) and water electrolyzers,respectively,whose performance is largely hindered by the low activity and poor stability of ***,we demonstrate that a simple phosphorization treatment of commercially available palladium-nickel(PdNi) catalysts results in multifunctional ternary palladium nickel phosphide(PdNiP) catalysts,which exhibit substantially enhanced electrocatalytic activity and stability for HER and OMEO of a number of molecules including formic acid,methanol,ethanol,and ethylene glycol,in acidic and/or alkaline *** improved performance results from the modification of electronic structure of palladium and nickel by the introduced phosphorus and the enhanced corrosion resistance of *** simple phosphorization approach reported here allows for mass production of highly-active OMEO and HER electrocatalysts,holding substantial promise for their large-scale application in direct liquid fuel cells and water electrolyzers.
