Nanopore-based devices have provided exciting opportunities to develop affordable label-free DNA sequencing *** a decade ago,graphene has been proposed as a two-dimensional(2D)nanopore membrane in order to achieve single-base ***,it was experimentally revealed that clogging of the graphene nanopore can occur due to the hydrophobic nature of graphene,thus hindering the translocation of *** overcome this problem,the exploration of alternative 2D materials has gained considerable interest over the last *** we show that a Ti_(2)C-based MXene nanopore functionalized by hydroxyl groups(–Oh)exhibits transverse conductance properties that allow for the distinction between all four naturally occurring DNA *** have used a combination of density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green’s function method to sample over multiple orientations of the nucleotides in the nanopore,as generated from molecular dynamics *** conductance variation resulting from sweeping an applied gate voltage demonstrates that the Ti_(2)C-based MXene nanopore possesses high potential to rapidly and reliably sequence *** findings open the door to further theoretical and experimental explorations of MXene nanopores as a promising 2D material for nanopore-based DNA sensing.

A successful energy transition depends on storage options in order to ensure power supply stability under auctuating generation of a growing share of renewable energies(RE).Battery storage is expensive and raw material intensive and therefore not suitable as a sole *** electricity may easily be converted to heat,which can be stored inexpensively for a short *** such simple Power-to-heat or P2h solutions,lack of electric power cannot be oset by conventional heat ***,if a building or an urban quarter is heated by means of cogeneration,so-called Combined heat and Power(ChP),or heat pumps(hP),the operation can be adjusted in such a way,that the building itself,*** massive structure,serves as heat *** generation and consumption is adjusted to the requirements of the grid(reactive power control).For the supply of a Berlin quarter,built in the 1950s and equipped with a district heating network and a ChP plant,the feasibility of the concept could be proved using dynamic building simulation as the analysis *** percent of the total heating consumption may useably be stored and extracted from the building *** absolute numbers:73 MWh/a heat can be buered corresponding to 34 MWh/a balancing *** each square meter of living area,3.7 kWh electrical balancing energy can be buered in the building’s thermal storage *** else is required than a re-programming of heating and possibly cooling *** capital investment is *** insulated and more massive structures could show a proportion of 27%of such shifted heat.

On low-pass digital filters in oceanography

Two types of filters are widely used to remove semidirunal and diurnal tidal signals and other high frequency noises in *** first type of filters uses moving average with weights in time domain,and can be easily *** data will be lost at each end of the time series,especially for the low low-pass *** second type of filters uses the discrete Fourier transform filter(DFTF)which operates in the frequency domain,and there are no data loss at the ends for the forward ***,owing to the Gibbs phenomenon and the discrete sampling(Nyquist effect),ringing appears in the inverse transformed data,which is especially serious at each *** some data at the ends are also *** present study tries to find out what causes the ringing and then to seek for methods to overcome the *** have found that there are two kinds of ringings,one is the Gibbs phenomenon,as defined *** other is the'Nyquist'ringing due to sampling Nyquist critical *** former is due to the abrupt transition in frequency *** Gibbs and Nyquist effects show the ringing at each end of the filtered time ***,the use of a cosine taper or a linear taper on the window in the frequency domain makes the transition band smooth,so that the Gibbs phenomenon will be *** applying the Fast Fourier Transform(FFT),the original time series at each end is properly tapered by a split cosine bell that reduces significant ringing since this method limits the energy transfer from outside of the Nyquist ***,the DFTF can be a powerful tool to suppress the signals in which we are not interested,with sharp peaks in low frequency variation and less data loss at each end.

Gold as a Potential Contrast Agent for Dual-Energy CT

Purpose: The K-edge of gold (81 keV) is located within the energy range of diagnostic CT. This might be advantageous for material differentiation in dual-energy CT (DECT). The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the differentiation between iodine or gold and body tissues using DECT at different kV spectra. Methods and Materials: A water filled tank phantom containing specimens with iodine (iopamidol), gold (sodium aurothiomalate), compact bone (compact porcine bone) and porcine muscle was scanned using a dual source CT (Definition, Siemens healthcare). Consecutive scans were performed at 80 kVp, 100 kVp, 120 kVp and 140 kVp with constant mAs settings. The mean attenuation values of the specimens were measured, and differences in calculated dual-energy ratios (DEratio) between body tissues and iodine or gold were determined for different DE spectra. Results: The attenuation of gold increased compared to 80 kVp at higher kVp-settings, while the attenuation of all other specimens decreased. The calculated DEratios at 80/100 kVp, 80/120 kVp and 80/140 kVp were 1.31, 1.62 and 1.91 for iodine, 0.89, 0.88 and 0.92 for gold, 1.20, 1.39 and 1.45 for compact bone, 1.01, 1.03 and 1.08 for muscle. The differences between the DEratios 80/100 kVp, 80/120 kVp and 80/140 kVp were 0.11, 0.23 and 0.46 for iodine and bone, 0.31, 0.51 and 0.53 for gold and bone, 0.29, 0.59 and 0.83 for iodine and muscle, 0.12, 0.15 and 0.16 for gold and muscle. Conclusion: DEratio of gold remains relatively stable along the energy spectrum of diagnostic CT and allows a reliable material differentiation between gold and bone already at contiguous low tube voltage settings (80 kV and 100 kV). Thus, gold might have a potential as a contrast agent for DECT.
