Delineating Key Determinants of Domestic Fuelwood Consumption of Rural Households in Western Himalaya-Policy Implications

A study was carried out in district samba of Western Himalayan province of Jammu and Kashmir of *** data were collected in an interview schedule in personal interview with 180 household *** association between the level of fuelwood consumption(low versus high consumption) and different factors,each individually,was investigated using chi-square test of association at 0.001 level of *** was found that out of 25 socio-economic,biophysical and alternate fuel factors,15 factors(each individually) significantly influenced the domestic fuelwood *** regression models of alternate fuel use,social,economic and biophysical factors were developed to identify key variables influencing fuelwood consumption levels within each respective category.A composite model was also developed to identify key factors when all variables in all the pre-said categories were considered ***,in contrast to expectation the model with alternate fuel use did not provide a good *** biophysical model also did not provide a good *** economic and composite models were the same with equal level of accuracy of *** implies that economic aspects,rather than the availability of alternate fuels,dominate fuelwood consumption levels of rural *** to increase the exposure of the head of household to outside world needs to formulated to reduce the domestic fuelwood consumption *** nearer to state forests are to be educated about efficient use of fuelwood and be encouraged to intensify use of Liquified Petroleum *** wider implications of study are:the availability of alternate fuels is not a necessary condition to decrease household level domestic fuelwood *** factors needs to be considered in designing strategies to reduce fuelwood *** employment opportunities would increase the opportunity cost of fuelwood collection and this would reduce its use.

Effect of Ni^(7+) Ion Irradiation on structure and Ammonia sensing Properties of Thermally Oxidized Zinc and Indium Films

ZnO and In203 films were prepared by thermal oxidation of vacuum deposited zinc and indium films, respec- tively onto the glass substrate at 30 ℃. The fabricated films have been irradiated with 100-MeV Ni7＋ ions at different fluences ranging from 5×1011 to 5×1013 ions/cm2. The structural and gas sensing properties of pristine and irradiated films have been discussed. X-ray diffraction （XRD） pattern of pristine and irradiated films reveal that the films are polycrystalline in nature and crystallinity increases after irradiation. In this study, highly porous In203 nanorods evolved when being irradiated at a fluence of 5×1013 ions/cm2 while ZnO film shows decrease in number of nanowires. The ammonia sensing performance of the Ni^7＋ irradiated In203 films shows an improvement as compared to its pristine counterpart.

Aberrant crypt focus and fragile histidine triad protein in sporadic colorectal carcinoma

AIM:To characterize aberrant crypt focus (ACF) in adjoining mucosa in sporadic colorectal carcinoma and to evaluate fragile histidine triad (Fhit) protein and Ki67. METHODs:ACF was identified grossly and classified histologically in 75 resected specimens. ACF was typed into hyperplastic ACF (HACF) and dysplastic ACF (DACF). sections of ACF, carcinoma and normal colonic mucosa as control were studied for Fhit and Ki67 expressions by immunohistochemistry and were grouped according to staining intensity and the number of positive stained cells observed in different histological groups. Comparison was done between the different groups by Pearson's χ 2 test and γ test for the ordinal data. P value s considered as ***:Age range was 40 to 86 years in males (mean = 43.36) and 45 to 70 years in females (mean = 56). HACF was identified in all cases studied in the non-tumorous colonic mucosa; ACF was observed as non-contiguous scattered foci, which supports the hypothesis of acquisition of single focus monoclonality by colonic epithelial cells in tumor generation. Twenty-four (32%) had DACF and were observed as closure to carcinoma foci. Intensity of Fhit expression:(1) HACF 40% exhibited strong intensity, similar to normal, moderate in 36% and weak in 24%; (2) DACF strong in 25%, moderate in 37.5% and weak in 37.5%; and (3) carcinoma negative in 16%, strong in 43% and moderate and weak in 28.5% each. significant difference was observed in intensity of the Fhit protein expressions by HACF and DACF (P s showed a stronger Fhit intensity compared to younger patients (P = 0.036). Vegetarian diet intake and nonsmokers showed stronger Fhit intensities. Advanced stage tumor, non-vegetarian diet and younger age was associated with loss of Fhit protein. Association of periodontal disease with glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes in Indian population

This study aims to investigate the link between glycated hemoglobin and diabetic complications with chronic periodontitis. A total of 207 patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic periodontitis （CP） were divided according to tertiles of mean PIsA （periodontal inflamed surface area） scores as low, middle and high PIsA groups. simultaneously a group of 67 periodontally healthy individuals （PH） was recruited. Periodontal examinations, including full-mouth assessment of probing depths （PPD）, bleeding on probing, clinical attachment level and plaque scores were determined. Blood analyses were carried out for glycated hemoglobin （HbA1c）, fasting plasma glucose （FPG）, 2 h post parandial glucose （PPG）. Individuals in PH group had significantly better glycemic control than CP group. Upon one-way analysis of variance, subjects with increased PIsA had significantly higher HbA1c levels, retinopathy and nephropathy （P 〈 0.05）. After controlling for age, gender, body mass index （BMI）, socioeconomic status （sEs）, family history of diabetes and periodontitis, duration of diabetes, the mean PIsA in mm^2, PPD 4-6 mm （%） and PPD ≥7 mm （%） emerged as significant predictors for elevated HbAlc in regression model （P 〈 0.05）. Logistic regression analysis revealed that PIsA was associated with higher risk of having retinopathy and neuropathy （odds ratio）. In our study, the association between glycemic control and diabetic complications with periodontitis was observed.

The structural Proteins of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus Bacteriophage MAC-1

In the present investigation the structural proteins associated with MAC-1 bacteriophage have been characterized using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (sDs-PAGE);tandem mass spectrometry of protein bands from sDs-PAGE gel;from the open reading frames (ORFs) deduced from MAC-1 genome sequence and amino acid sequence homology searches from the Uniprot database (up000002418). Results have led to the identification of at least three structural proteins associated with MAC-1 phage genome. They are: capsid protein (~55,000-daltons);spike protein (~22,000-daltons) and a low molecular weight DNA binding protein (~4000-dal- tons). In addition, two other minor proteins were tentatively identified as replicative and scaffold proteins based on two to three unique peptides from mass spectrometry data. However, other proteins coded (ORFs) by phage genome remain to be identified.

severe acute pancreatitis often leads to pancreatic and peripancreatic collections but,rarely,it can lead to collections at sites remote from the *** male patients presented with abdominal pain and inguinoscrotal *** were initially misdiagnosed with obstructed inguinal hernia,epididymo-orchitis and hydrocele,***,their diagnosis of acute pancreatitis was revealed on laparotomy in one patient and on computed tomography(CT)in the remaining two *** these cases had extensive peripancreatic necrosis and paracolic collections tracking along the psoas muscle,downwards towards the *** collections were initially managed by percutaneous drainage and saline irrigation as a part of the‘step-up’*** of these patients required open necrosectomy,while all required incision and drainage of inguinoscrotal *** the patients were discharged in satisfactory *** swelling is unusual as a first presentation of acute pancreatitis.A high index of suspicion,with careful study of patient’s history and examination along with CT,may provide an accurate *** drainage may be required to control sepsis and also provide an egress route for intra-abdominal collections.

Huanglongbing （HLB） is the most destructive disease of citrus worldwide. The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama （Hemiptera： Psyllidae）, is the vector of the phloem-inhabiting bacterium, Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, which is presumed to cause HLB in Florida citrus. Laboratory and field studies were conducted to examine the behavioral responses of male and female D. cirri to their cuticular extracts. In olfactometer assays, more male D. citri were attracted to one, five, or 10 female cuticular extract equivalent units than blank controls. The results were confirmed in field studies in which clear or yellow traps baited with 10 female cuticular extract equivalent units attracted proportionately more males than clear traps baited with male cuticular extract or unbaited traps. Analyses of cuticular constituents of male and female D. citri revealed differences between the sexes in chemical composition of their cuticular extracts. Laboratory bioassays with synthetic chemicals identified from cuticular extracts indicated that dodecanoic acid attracted more males than clean air. Traps baited with dodecanoic acid did not increase total catch olD. citri as compared with blank traps at the dosages tested; however, the sex ratio ofpsyllid catch was male biased on traps baited with the highest lure loading dosage tested （10.0 mg）.

Agrobacterium Tumefaciens Based Transformation of Pelargonium x Hortrum cv. ‘samba’ with Anti-1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase cDNA to Regulate Ethylene Biosynthesis

Phytohormone, ethylene plays an important role in plant growth and development including fruit ripening and flower senescence. The synthesis of 1-aminocylo-propane-1- carboxylate (ACC), the immediate precursor of ethylene, from s-adenosyl-methionine is catalyzed by ACC synthase;and which is also a rate limiting step in the ethylene biosynthetic pathway. Therefore, it plays a key role in ethylene biosynthesis and the genes that code for ACC synthase are of special interest. Moreover, in zonal geraniums, ethylene bursts released from cuttings can have profound impact on the viability of explants for plant propagation. Biotechnological approach involving genetic modification that may reduce ethylene levels has potential for increasing the shelf-life of cuttings for plant propagation. These considerations have led us to clone several cDNA of ACC synthase genes from Pelargonium x hortorum cv. ?‘sincerity’. To transform geranium cells with Agrobacterium tumefaciens an in vitro regeneration? system was developed using very young petiole explants. An Antisense construct of ACC synthase cDNA (PHsacc41) ligated into binary vector pAM696 was introduced into A. tumefaciens EHA 105 cells. Petiole explants were incubated with the Agrobacterium for 15 min and then co-cultivated for several days on Ms medium containing 5 mM BAP and ?1 mM IAA in? the dark without the antibiotics. selection for transformants was carried out in the presence of kanamycin and timentin. Transgenic plantlets generated were examined for inserted gene cassette by PCR and southern blotting. Recovery of positive transformants that survived selection suggested that it is possible to transform and introduce genes via transformation in hybrid geraniums for genetic modification.
