Predictors of early outcome in unstable pelvic fractures

Objective： To define the preoperative and intraoperative variables which may affect the immediate postoperative outcome in surgically managed patients with unstable pelvic fractures. Methods： This study was performed prospectively from January 2009 to June 2011 on 36 consecutive patients admitted to the trauma ward of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, with unstable pelvic injuries. Results： In the present study of 36 patients, 29 were managed surgically. Surgical duration was 2 hours in pa- tients operated on within 1 week and 3.4 hours in those operated on after 1 week. The blood loss was 550 ml when surgery was done after a week, but when done within a week it was 350 ml. The average blood loss through Pfanenstial approach was 360 ml, through posterior approach was 408 ml and through combined approach was 660 ml which was significantly high. Conclusion： Anterior approach to the pelvis would cause significantly more amount of blood loss than poste- rior approach and extemal fixation. Surgical approaches do not have any influence on the surgical duration or the infec- tion rate. The blood loss significantly increases when the surgical time is more than 1 h. The infection rate is not influ- enced by the duration of surgery. Presence or absence of associated injuries to the head, chest or abdomen is the main determinants of patient＇s survival and it greatly influ- ences the duration of hospital stay.

This paper presents air gap aperture coupled microstrip antenna for dual-band operation over the frequency range of (2.9 to 6.0 GHz). This antenna differs from any other microstrip antenna with their feeding structure of the radiating patch element. Input signal couples to the radiating patch trough the aperture that exists on the ground plane of microstrip feed line. The dual-band achieved by variation of air gap [2 mm to 6 mm] between single patch antenna and aper-ture coupled microstrip antenna. The main advantage of this type antenna is increased the bandwidth of the antenna as compared to a single layered patch antenna. The two resonant frequencies can vary over a wide frequency range and the input impedance is easily matched for both frequencies. The obtain ratios of resonance frequencies are variable from 2.1 GHz to 1.1 GHz with increasing the air gap between single patch and aperture coupled microstrip antenna. The measured return loss [–14 dB] exhibits an impedance bandwidth of 35%. The input impedance and VSWR return loss have been measured with the help of Network analyzer.

Snails’ protection is essential because this species is to maintain a balanced ecology of water sources. They occur in rivers as well as ponds and balance the pH level of water. But these sources of water are contaminated by effluents, pollutants, acid rain, particulates, biological wastes etc. They can change the pH of water. Water is absorber of carbon dioxide and it converts carbon dioxide into carbonic. Other above mentioned wastes also increase the concentration of H+ ions in water. They produce hostile environment for snails. The outer part of snails is made of CaCO3. It produces chemical reaction in acidic medium and corrosion reaction is accelerated, and thus deterioration starts on the surface of snails. This medium makes their survival become miserable. For this work, corrosion of the snails’ study in the pH values of water is 6.5 in H2CO3 environment. The corrosion rates of snails were calculated by gravimetric methods and potentiostat technique. Aloe Vera was used for corrosion protection in acidic medium. The surface adsorption phenomenon was studied by Langmuir isotherm. Aloe Vera formed thin surface film on the interface of snails which adhered with chemical bonding. It was confirmed by activation energy, heat of adsorption, free energy, enthalpy and entropy. The results of surface coverage area and inhibitors efficiency indicated that Aloe Vera developed a strong protective barrier in the acidic medium.

Physics design of 14 MeV neutron generator facility at the Institute for Plasma Research

A high energy and high yield neutron source is a prime requirement for technological studies related to fusion reactor development. It provides a high-energy neutron environment for small-scale fusion reactor components research and testing such as tritium breeding, shielding, plasmafacing materials, reaction cross-section data study for fusion materials, etc. Along with ITER participation, the Institute of Plasma Research, India is developing an accelerator-based 14 MeV neutron source with a yield of 10^(12)n s^(-1). The design of the source is based on the deuterium–tritium fusion reaction. The deuterium beam is accelerated and delivered to the tritium target to generate 14 MeV neutrons. The deuterium beam energy and tritium availability in the tritium target are the base parameters of the accelerator-based neutron source design. The paper gives the physics design of the neutron generator facility of the Institute for Plasma Research. It covers the requirements, design basis, and physics parameters of the neutron generator. As per the analytical results generator can produce more than 1 × 10^(12)n s^(-1)with a 110 keV D^(+) ion beam of 10 mA and a minimum 5 Ci tritium target. However, the detailed simulation with the more realistic conditions of deuteron ion interaction with the tritium titanium target shows that the desired results cannot be achieved with 110 keV. The safe limit of the ion energy should be 300 keV as per the simulation. At 300 keV ion energy and 20 mA current, it reaches 1.6 × 10^(12)n s^(-1). Moreover, it was found that to ensure sufficiently long operation time a tritium target of more than 20 Ci should be used. The scope of the neutron source is not limited to the fusion reactor research studies, it is extended to other areas such as medical radioisotopes research, semiconductor devices irradiations, and many more.

Cardiac arrhythmias detection in an ECG beat signal using fast fourier transform and artificial neural network

Cardiac Arrhythmias shows a condition of abnor-mal electrical activity in the heart which is a threat to humans. This paper presents a method to analyze electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, extract the fea-tures, for the classification of heart beats according to different arrhythmias. Data were obtained from 40 records of the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database (only one lead). Cardiac arrhythmias which are found are Tachycardia, Bradycardia, Supraventricular Tachycardia, Incomplete Bundle Branch Block, Bundle Branch Block, Ventricular Tachycardia. A learning dataset for the neural network was obtained from a twenty records set which were manually classified using MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database Directory and docu- mentation, taking advantage of the professional experience of a cardiologist. Fast Fourier transforms are used to identify the peaks in the ECG signal and then Neural Networks are applied to identify the diseases. Levenberg Marquardt Back-Propagation algorithm is used to train the network. The results obtained have better efficiency then the previously proposed methods.

Experimental Modal Analysis of Stator Overhangs of a Large Turbogenerator

Modal analysis of engg. structure for comprehending/resolving the vibration related issues/problems are well known. Two classical techniques-analytical (Finite Element Method-FEM) and experimental (Impact testing/Natural Frequency Test-NFT/Bump test) are generally used as complementary as well as stand-alone depending on the time, nature of structure, availability of the analysis tools, cost etc. In the present study, experimental technique was used in mitigating the endwinding vibration problem of a turbogenerator. In one of the Turbogenerators of 50 Hz variant, an increasing vibration trend was observed with system frequency sweep in almost whole of the endwinding basket particularly more on exciter end during sustained short / open circuit conditional runs. Experimental modal analysis was carried out of the overhangs. Frequency response functions (FRFs) were generated in local and global modes. The analysis thereon indicated global resonance of stator overhangs. Accordingly, appropriate remedial measures were planned and implemented. Consequently, global resonance frequency was shifted to higher zone, which in turn, resulted into substantial reduction in endwinding vibration levels.
