Algae as Functional Foods for the Elderly

Older people may have more difficulties in acquiring the nutrients they need from diet and they are at greater risk of chronic diseases. Hence, functional foods based on algae, might have a role in improving very important nutrients intake without an increase in calories. This is crucial for middle age people that become less active and will not dispend as much energy as they use to, which will contribute for certain diseases associated with age. Algae produce a great variety of biological active compounds which cannot be found in other organisms. Moreover, they have been reported for their potential medicinal uses. Therefore, they have high potential as a source of functional ingredients. In this review, we will give relevant information about the issue, explain above, pointing out the information related to the compounds that could be responsible for the improvement in quality of life during elderly. It will be also referred that seaweeds can be a source of new compounds for drug discovery.

Degradation of indomethacin in river water under stress and non-stress laboratory conditions:degradation products,long-term evolution and adsorption to sediment

The pharmaceutical compound indomethacin is not totally removed in wastewater treatment plants,whose effluents flow into aquatic environments;concentrations in the 0.1-100 ng/L range are commonly found in surface waters,and its fate is ***,biological,photochemical and thermal degradation assays were conducted under stress and non-stress conditions to estimate its degradation rate in river water and establish its degradation products over *** results revealed that direct sunlight irradiation promoted the complete degradation of indomethacin（2 μg/L） in less than 6 hr,but indomethacin was detected over a period of 4 months when water was kept under the natural day-night cycle and the exposure to sunlight was partially limited,as occurs inside a body of *** biological degradation in water was negligible,while the hydrolysis at pH 7.8 was *** were monitored by ultra-pressure liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight/mass spectrometry after solid-phase extraction,and six degradation products were found;their structures were proposed based on the molecular formulae and fragmentation observed in high-resolution tandem mass spectra.4-Chlorobenzoic and 2-acetamido-5-methoxybenzoic acids were the long-term transformation products,persisting for at least 30 weeks in water kept under non-stress ***,the degradation in the presence of sediment was also monitored over time,with some differences being *** adsorption coefficients of indomethacin and degradation products on river sediment were calculated;long-term degradation products did not have significant adsorption to sediment.

There is ongoing research in freestanding single-atom thick elemental metal patches,including those suspended in a two-dimensional(2D)material,due to their utility in providing new structural and energetic insight into novel metallic 2D *** pores have shown promise as support systems for suspending such *** study explores the potential of Sn atoms to form freestanding stanene and/or Sn patches in graphene *** atoms were deposited on graphene,where they formed novel single-atom thick 2D planar clusters/patches(or membranes)ranging from 1 to 8 atoms within the graphene *** of three or more atoms adopted either a star-like or close-packed structural *** functional theory(DFT)calculations were conducted to look at the cluster configurations and energetics(without the graphene matrix)and were found to deviate from experimental observations for 2D patches larger than five *** was attributed to interfacial interactions between the graphene pore edges and Sn *** presented findings help advance the development of single-atom thick 2D elemental metal membranes.

AIM:To examine whether the administration of atorvastatin and rosuvastatin would prevent experimentallyinduced hepatic cirrhosis in ***:Liver cirrhosis was induced by injections of thioacetamide(TAA).Rats were treated concurrently with TAA alone or TAA and either atorvastatin(1,10 and 20 mg/kg) or rosuvastatin(1,2.5,5,10 and 20 mg/kg) given daily by nasogastric ***:Liver fibrosis and hepatic hydroxyproline content,in the TAA-treated group was significantly higher than those of the controls [11.5 ± 3.2 vs 2.6 ± 0.6 mg/g protein(P = 0.02)].There were no differences in serum aminotransferase levels in the TAA controls compared to all the groups treated concomitantly by *** statins used in our study did not prevent liver fibrosis or reduce portal hypertension,and had no effect on hepatic oxidative ***,the hepatic level of malondialdehyde was not lower in those groups treated by TAA + statins compared to TAA *** vitro studies,using the BrdU method have shown that atorvastatin had no effect of hepatic stellate cells ***,statin treatment was not associated with worsening of liver damage,portal hypertension or survival ***:Atorvastatin or rosuvastatin did not inhibit TAA-induced liver cirrhosis or oxidative stress in *** statins may have therapeutic applications in hepatic fibrosis due to other etiologies deserve further investigation.

The objectives of this research work were to evaluate the effect of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (gIT) on melon peel juice (MPJ) powder from fruit processing industry by-products,considering (i) the recovery and accessibility indexes,(ii) the changes on antioxidant activity,and (iii) the prebiotic *** exposition to gIT conditions a decrease on the total phenolic content (TPC = 65.31%) and antioxidant activity by ABTS = 39.77% and DPPH = 45.91% were ***,these both parameters exhibited stable accessibility,accounting with 81.89%,76.55%,and 54.07% for TPC,ABTS and DPPH,*** gastrointestinal digestion,the non-absorbed fraction exhibited a positive impact on the growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains,possibly associated with the high content of simple sugar (glucose and fructose).This fraction also showed to be safe on Caco-2 intestinal *** findings suggest that MPJ might be used as a potential food functional ingredient.

First Late Triassic Record of a Paleoentomofauna from South America(Malargüe Basin,Mendoza Province,Argentina)

Late Middle Triassic to early Late Triassic insects from Argentina have been previously described from the Bermejo and Cuyana Basins where they have been recovered from the Ischichuca-Los Rastros and Potrerillos-Cacheuta Formations, respectively. The insect fauna discussed herein was collected during field studies in 1986/1987 from the Llantenes section （Norian to Rhaetian？ Late Triassic）, which is situated in the Malargiie Basin in southern Mendoza province. The insect remains were found in the upper part of the Llantenes section （Llantenes Formation）, which is built up of two coarsening-upwards cycles reflecting a deltaic progradation of a fluvial into a lacustrine environment （lower part）, succeeded by repeated progradatious into a floodplaindominated environment （upper part; with finds of insects, conchostracans, fish remains, plant fragments, and drifted logs）. The new finds represent the youngest Triassic insect records described from Argentina and even from South America in its entirety. There is only one contemporaneous fossil assemblage in gondwana： in the Ciarence/Moreton Basin （Aberdare Conglomerate; Late Norian） in Australia. The new Triassic insects include an impression of an isolated Mecopterida-like wing （Mendozachorista volkheimeri gen. et sp. nov.; Mendozachoristidae fam. nov.）, coleopteran elytra of the Permosynidae （Ademosyne rosenfeldi sp. nov. and Ademosyne Uantenesensis sp. nov.） and other isolated body fragments. This new Late Triassic entomofauna from Argentina is of considerable importance in the reconstruction of the biotic recovery of continental environments in gondwana after the catastrophic mass extinction at the P/T boundary.

Carbon stock estimation in halophytic wooded savannas of Uruguay:An ecosystem approach

Savannas constitute a mixture of trees and shrub patches with a more continuous herbaceous *** contribution of this biome to the soil organic carbon(SOC)and above-ground biomass(AgB)carbon(C)stock globally is ***,they are frequently subjected to land use changes,promoting increases in CO_(2) *** Uruguay,subtropical wooded savannas cover around 100,000 ha,of which approximately 28%is circumscribed to sodic soils(i.e.,subtropical halophytic wooded savannas).Nevertheless,there is little background about the contribution of each ecosystem component to the C stock as well as site-specific allometric *** study was conducted in 5 ha of subtropical halophytic wooded savannas of the national protected area Esteros y Algarrobales del Rio *** work aimed to estimate the contribution of the main ecosystem components(e.g.,soil,trees,shrubs,and herbaceous plants)to the C ***-specific allometric equations for the most frequent tree species and shrub genus were fitted based on basal diameter(BD)and total height(H).The fitted equations accounted for between 77%and 98%of the aerial biomass variance of Netuma affinis and Vachellia *** shrubs(Baccharis sp.),the adjusted equation accounted for 86%of total aerial biomass.C stock for the entire system was 116.71±11.07 Mg·ha^(-1),of which 90.7%was allocated in the soil,8.3%in the trees,0.8%in the herbaceous plants,and 0.2%in the *** results highlight the importance of subtropical halophytic wooded savannas as C sinks and their relevance in the mitigation of global warming under a climate change scenario.

Simulations on the multi-shell target ignition driven by radiation pulse in Z-pinch dynamic hohlraum

We present the first simulation results of a multi-shell target ignition driven by Z-pinch dynamic hohlraum radiation *** radiation pulse is produced with a special Z-pinch dynamic hohlraum configuration,where the hohlraum is composed of a single metal liner,a low-Z plastic foam,and a high-Z metallic *** implosion dynamics of a hohlraum and a multi-shell target are investigated separately by the one-dimensional code *** the peak drive current is 50 MA,simulations suggest that an x-ray pulse with nearly constant radiation temperature(-310 eV)and a duration about 9 ns can be obtained.A small multi-shell target with a radius of 1.35 mm driven by this radiation pulse is able to achieve volumetric ignition with an energy gain(g)about 6.19,where g is the ratio of the yield to the absorbed *** this research,we better understand the effects of non-uniformities and hydrodynamics instabilities in Z-pinch dynamic hohlraum.
