AIM To directly visualize helicobacter pylori(h. pylori) by the highly sensitive and specific technique of immunohistochemical staining in colonic tissue from patients newly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis(UC).METhODS Colonoscopic biopsies from thirty patients with newly diagnosed UC and thirty controls were stained with Giemsa stain and immunohistochemical stain for detection of h. pylori in the colonic tissue. Results were confirmed by testing h. pylori Ag in the stool then infected patients were randomized to receive either anti h. pylori treatment or *** Twelve/30(40%) of the UC patients were positive for h. pylori by Giemsa, and 17/30(56.6%) by immunohistochemistry stain. Among the control group 4/30(13.3%) and 6/30(20 %) were positive for h. pylori by Giemsa and immunohistochemistry staining respectively. h. pylori was significantly higher in UC than in controls(P = 0.04 and 0.007). All Giemsa positive patients and controls were positive by immunohistochemical stain. Four cases of the control group positive for h. pylori also showed microscopic features consistent with early *** h. pylori can be detected in colonic mucosa of patients with UC and patients with histological superficial ulcerations and mild infiltration consistent with early UC. There seems to be an association between UC and presence of h. pylori in the colonic tissue. Whether this is a causal relationship or not remains to be discovered.

Interactive Effects of Drought Stress and Phytohormones or Polyamines on Growth and Yield of Two M(<i>Zea maize</i>L) Genotypes

Two maize genotypes (Nefertiti and Bashaier) were picked up from nine maize genotypes during the early vegetative growth (25 days) to be cultivated in open field upon the crop yield under the different drought stress levels (90,70,50,30) or under the interaction effect of drought stress and phytohormones or polyamines. According to the data of growth criteria, the maize genotype Nefertiti was found to be the most drought sensitive genotype, while the genotype Bashaier was found to be the most drought resistant genotype. Additionally while the photosynthetic pigments remained more or less unchanged in genotype Bashaier, their biosynthesis destroyed earlier in the drought sensitive genotype (Nefertiti). Also while the genotype Bashaier absorbed and accumulated a sufficient amount of mono and divalent cations (K+, Ca++ and Mg++), the genotype Nefertiti did not. Accordingly while the genotype Bashaier gave a crop yield up to 50% field capacity, the genotype Nefertiti gave a crop yield only up to 70% field capacity and failed to give a crop yield beyond this level. The interaction effect of drought stress and phytohormones and polyamines improved the all above characteristics. Interestingly each of these activators considerably improved the production of crop yield only in genotype Bashaier specially polyamines they produced more than 60% field capacity and at the level of 30% field capacity (the level which did not give crop yield in this genotype). however, phytohormones in generally did not make an important effect on the crop yield in genotype Nefertiti although they improved the dry matter production during the vegetative stages. Such situation seemed to be complicated and borne many questions to be studied in the future.

In this article, we study the problem of predicting future records and order statistics (two-sample prediction) based on progressive type-II censored with random removals, where the number of units removed at each failure time has a discrete binomial distribution. We use the Bayes procedure to derive both point and interval bounds prediction. Bayesian point prediction under symmetric and symmetric loss functions is discussed. The maximum likelihood (ML) prediction intervals using “plug-in” procedure for future records and order statistics are derived. An example is discussed to illustrate the application of the results under this censoring scheme.

In this paper, the inference for the Burr-X model under progressively first-failure censoring scheme is discussed. Based on this new censoring were the number of units removed at each failure time has a discrete binomial distribution. The maximum likelihood, Bootstrap and Bayes estimates for the Burr-X distribution are obtained. The Bayes estimators are obtained using both the symmetric and asymmetric loss functions. Approximate confidence interval and highest posterior density interval (hPDI) are discussed. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the proposed estimation methods developed here. The maximum likelihood and the different Bayes estimates are compared via a Monte Carlo simulation study.

Rubber plunger surface texturing for friction reduction in medical syringes

Friction is a genuine issue in the use of many medical devices involving rubbery materials such as plungers in medical syringes. This paper presents a new direction for the reduction of friction in medical syringes based on surface texturing of the rubber plunger. The specimens were prepared by casting poly(vinylsiloxane)(PVS) rubber into a pre-fabricated negative template obtained by 3D printing. Friction tests were performed on a home-made test-rig. It was clearly shown that friction resistance can be considerably manipulated when using textured plungers.

The propagation of plane longitudinal waves at an interface of a semi-infinite piezoelectric elastic medim under the influence of the initial stresses is discussed. Quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) is used to investigate multifragmentation resulting from an expanding nuclear matter. Equation of state, the structure of nuclear matter and symmetric nu-clear matter is discussed. Also, the dependence of the fragment mass distribution on the initial temperature (Tinit) and the radial flow velocity (h) is studied. When h is large, the distribution shows exponential shape, whereas for small h, it obeys the exponentially falling distribution with mass number. The cluster formation in an expanding system is found to be different from the one in a thermally equilibrated system. The used hamiltonian has a classical kinetic energy term and an effective potential term composed of four parts.

A meteorological data acquisition system is built using a PIC16F877A microcontroller and electric output-based sensors. This system is programmed in C language using the PCWh compiler. It is smart, accurate, cheap, small, light and easily movable. It is designed to automatically get instantaneous measurements of air temperature, atmospheric pressure, and relative humidity. Depending on their utilisation, these measurements are collected with repetition rate tuneable from one minute to one hour. They are displayed on LCD screen and transferred to a personal computer where they are stored and processed. As an application, such data are recorded in situ and used to estimate the radio refractivity of air near the ground in real time. This parameter is necessary to account for the propagation of radiofrequency waves through the lower atmosphere, during wireless transmissions.

The concept of generalized order statistics has been introduced as a unified approach to a variety of models of ordered random variables with different interpretations. In this paper, we develop methodology for constructing inference based on n selected generalized order statistics (GOS) from inverse Weibull distribution (IWD), Bayesian and non-Bayesian approaches have been used to obtain the estimators of the parameters and reliability function. We have examined Bayes estimates under various losses such as the balanced squared error (balanced Sel) and balanced LINEX loss functions are considered. We show that Bayes estimate under balanced Sel and balanced LINEX loss functions are more general, which include the symmetric and asymmetric losses as special cases. This was done under assumption of discrete-continuous mixture prior for the unknown model parameters. The parametric bootstrap method has been used to construct confidence interval for the parameters and reliability function. Progressively type-II censored and k-record values as a special case of GOS are considered. Finally a practical example using real data set was used for illustration.
