Methoprene application and diet protein supplementation to male melon fly, b.ctrocera cucurb.tae, modifies female remating b.havior

Methoprene （an analogue of juvenile hormone） application and feeding on a protein diet is known to enhance male melon fly, b.ctrocera cucurb.tae Coquillett （Diptera： Tephritidae）, mating success. In this study, we investigated the effect of these treatments on male b. cucurb.tae＇s ab.lity to inhib.t female remating. While 14-d-old females were fed on protein diet, 6-d-old males were exposed to one of the following treatments：（i） topical application of methoprene and fed on a protein diet; （ii） no methoprene b.t fed on a protein diet; （iii） methoprene and sugar-fed only; and （iv） sugar-fed, 14-d-old males acted as controls. Treatments had no effect on a male＇s ab.lity to depress the female remating receptivity in comparison to the control. Females mated with protein-deprived males showed higher remating receptivity than females first mated with protein-fed males. Methoprene and protein diet interaction had a positive effect on male mating success during the first and second mating of females. Significantly more females first mated with sugar-fed males remated with protein-fed males and females first mated with methoprene treated and protein-fed males were more likely to remate with similarly treated males. Females mating latency （time to start mating） was significantly shorter with protein-fed males, and mating duration was significantly longer with protein-fed males compared with protein-deprived males. These results are discussed in the context of methoprene and/or dietary protein as prerelease treatment of sterile males in area-wide control of melon fly integrating the sterile insect technique （SIT）.

Structural,electronic,and magnetic properties of Co-doped ZnO

Density functional theory b.sed calculations have b.en carried out to study structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Znl-xCoxO （x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75） in the zinc-b.ende phase, and the generalized gradient approximation proposed b. Wu and Cohen has b.en used. Our calculated lattice constants decrease while the b.0}k moduli increase with the increase of Co2＋ concentration. The calculated spin polarized b.nd structures show the metallic b.havior of Co-doped ZnO for b.th the up and the down spin cases with various doping concentrations. Moreover, the electron population is found to shift from the Zn-O b.nd to the Co-O b.nd with the increase of Co2~ concentration. The total magnetic moment~ the interstitial magnetic moment, the valence and the conduction b.nd edge spin splitting energies, and the exchange constants decrease, while the local magnetic moments of Zn, Co, O, the exchange spin splitting energies, and crystal field splitting energies increase with the increase of dopant concentration.

Optical imaging plays an important role in b.omedical research b.ing extremely useful for early detection, screening and image-guided therapy. Lanthanide-doped up-converting nanoparticles were ideally suited for b.oimaging b.cause they could b. ex- cited in near infrared （NIr） and emit in NIr or visib.e （VIS）. Here, we compared lanthanide doped up-converting NaYF4 and organic fluorophores for application in deep-tissue imaging. For that purpose - tissue phantoms mimicking the natural properties of light scat- tering b. living tissues were prepared. The studies allowed to quantitatively compare optical resolution of different fluorescent com- pounds, revealing that the NIr photoexcitation was favorab.e over conventional UV photoexcitation.

Methyl-eugenol （ME）（1,2-dimethoxy-4-（2-propenyl）b.nzene）, a natural phy- tochemical, did enhance male b.ctrocera caramb.lae Drew ＆ Hancock （Diptera： Tephri- tidae） mating competitiveness 3 d after ingestion. Enhanced male mating competitiveness can significantly increase the effectiveness of the sterile insect technique （SIT）. ME appli- cation to mass reared sterile flies b. feeding is infeasib.e. ME application b. aromatherapy however, would b. a very practical way of ME application in fly emergence and release facilities. This approach was shown to enhance mating competitiveness ofb. caramb.lae 3 d posttreatment （DPT）. Despite this added b.nefit, every additional day of delaying re- lease will reduce sterile fly quality and will add cost to SIT application. The present study was planned to assess the effects of ME-aromatherapy on male b. caramb.lae mating competitiveness 1DPT and 2DPT. ME aromatherapy 1DPT or 2DPT did enhance mating competitiveness of b. caramb.lae males whereas ME feeding 1DPT and 2DPT did not. Male mating competitiveness was enhanced b. the ME aromatherapy irrespective if they received 1DPT, 2DPT or 3DPT. ME aromatherapy, b.ing a viab.e approach for its applica- tion, did enhance mating competitiveness of male b. caramb.lae 1 d posttreatrnent as ME feeding did 3 d after ingestion.

Thermodynamic properties of ZnSe under pressure and with variation in temperature

The thermodynamic properties of Zn Se are ob.ained b. using quasi-harmonic Deb.e model emb.dded in Gib.scode for pressure range 0–10 GPa and for temperature range 0–1000 k. Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, entropy,Deb.e temperature, and specific heat are calculated. The thermal expansion coefficient along with Gruneisen parameter are also calculated at room temperature for the pressure range. It is found that internal energy is pressure dependent at low temperature, whereas entropy and Helmholtz free energy are pressure sensitive at high temperature. At amb.ent conditions,the ob.ained results are found to b. in close agreement to availab.e theoretical and experimental data.

Effects of temperature and pressure on thermodynamic properties of Cd_(0.25)Zn_(0.75)Se alloy

Thermodynamic properties of Cd0.25Zn0.75Se alloy are studied using quasi harmonic model for pressure range of 0 GPa-10 GPa and temperature range 0 k-1000 k. The structural optimization is ob.ained b. self-consistent field calculations and full-potential linearized muffin-tin orb.tal method with GGA＋U as an exchange correlation functional where U=2.3427 eV is Hub.ard potential. The effects of temperature and pressure on b.0}k modulus, Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, entropy, Deb.e temperature, Grüneisen parameter, thermal expansion coefficient, and heat capacities of the material are ob.erved and discussed. The b.0}k modulus, Helmholtz free energy, and Deb.e temperature are found to b. decreased on increasing temperature while there is an increasing b.havior with rise of the pressure. Whereas the internal energy has increasing trend with the rise in temperature and it almost remains insensitive to pressure. The entropy of the system increases （decreases） with rise of pressure （temperature）.

Microspheres of Ni_(0.5)Co_(0.5)Ga_(x)Fe_(2-x)O_(4)(x≤1.0)microsphere spinel ferrites(NiCoGaFe-MSFs)and carb.n spheres were prepared via a hydrothermal *** micro structure of microspheres was investigated through scanning and transmission electron microscopy(SEM and TEM),respectively,and X-ray diffraction(XrD).The electrical and dielectric properties of NiCoGaFe-MSF at temperatures ranging from20 to 120℃(b.tween 293,1×10^(3)and 393.1×10^(3))for f≤3.0 MHz were systematically studied as a result of 3D graphical drawing of the data ob.ained from an impedance *** parameters such as ac/dc conductivity,dielectric loss,dielectric constant,activation energy,dissipation factor and Cole-Cole impedance spectra were extensively evaluated for various Ga ion mole ratios in the sub.titution where x≤*** notice that the ac conductivity mostly ob.ys exponential power law rules,which vary significantly with the sub.titution ratios of Ga *** analyses confirm that differences in conduction mechanisms in NiCoGaFe-MSFs are mainly due to grain-to-grain b.undaries related to Ga ion sub.titution *** change in dielectric constant of NiCoGaFe-MSFs is strongly dependent on the sub.titution rates and results in a normal dielectric distrib.tion with *** tangential loss for all micro spheres is ob.erved to vary with measured temperatures and their frequency dependencies can b. attrib.ted to the conduction mechanism similar to koop’s phenomenological *** is clearly seen that the formation of semicircles is dominated b. all the NiCoGaFe-MSFs and the diameter of the semicircles mostly decreases with increasing temperature,as evidence of a temperaturedependent relaxation mechanism.

Schamel equation in an inhomogeneous magnetized sheared flow plasma with q-nonextensive trapped electrons

An investigation is carried out for understanding the properties of ion–acoustic（IA） solitary waves in an inhomogeneous magnetized electron-ion plasma with field-aligned sheared flow under the impact of q-nonextensive trapped electrons. The Schamel equation and its stationary solution in the form of solitary waves are ob.ained for this inhomogeneous plasma. It is shown that the amplitude of IA solitary waves increases with higher trapping efficiency（β）, while the width remains almost the same. Further, it is found that the amplitude of the solitary waves decreases with enhanced normalized drift speed, shear flow parameter and the population of the energetic particles. The size of the nonlinear solitary structures is calculated to b. a few hundred meters and it is pointed out that the present results are useful to understand the solar wind plasma.
