Multifunctional zinc ion doped sol-gel derived mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Mesoporous bioactive glasses have been widely investigated for applications in bone tissue regeneration and,more recently,in soft tissue repair and wound *** this study we produced mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles(MBGNs)based on the SiO2-CaO *** the intention of adding subsidiary biological function,MBGNs were doped with Zn2+***-MBGNs with 8 mol%ZnO content were synthesized via microemulsion assisted sol-gel *** synthesized particles were homogeneous in shape and *** exhibited spherical shape,good dispersity,and a size of 130±10 *** addition of zinc precursors did not affect the morphology of particles,while their specific surface area increased in comparison to *** presence of Zn2+ions inhibited the formation of hydroxycarbonate apatite(HCAp)on the particles after immersion in simulated body fluid(SBF).No formation of HCAp crystals on the surface of Zn-MBGNs could be observed after 14 days of ***,powders containing relatively high amount of zinc released Zn2+ions in low concentration(0.6-1.2 mg L^−1)but in a sustained *** releasing feature enables Zn-MBGNs to avoid potentially toxic levels of Zn2+ions,indeed Zn-MBGNs were seen to improve the differentiation of osteoblast-like cells(MG-63).Additionally,Zn-MBGNs showed higher ability to adsorb proteins in comparison to MBGNs,which could indicate a favourable later attachment of *** to their advantageous morphological and physiochemical properties,Zn-MBGNs show great potential as bioactive fillers or drug delivery systems in a variety of applications including bone regeneration and wound healing.

Since first isolation in 1947 from the Zika forest in Uganda, Zika virus(ZIKV) has been principally known as a benign agent associated with sporadic human infections in a restricted number of African countries. However, during 2015–2016,an Asian lineage of ZIKV caused an unprecedentedly large outbreak in the Americas and sizeable numbers of exported cases across the globe. In this review, we critically appraise the recent advances in molecular epidemiological studies of ZIKV performed to date, and we highlight the pivotal role played by genomic surveillance in elucidating the origins,dissemination and evolution of the Asian lineage of ZIKV in Asia and in the Americas.

Variation of Bioactive Compounds in Hypericum perforatum Growing in Turkey During Its Phenological Cycle

The present study was conducted to determine phenologic and morphogeneUc variation of hyperlcln, chlorogenlc acid and flavonoids, as rutin, hyperoside, apigenin-7-O-glucoside, quercitrin, quercetin content of Hypericum perforatum L. growing in Turkey. Wild growing plants were harvested at vegetative, floral budding, full flowering, fresh frulUng and mature fruiting stages and dissected into stem, leaf and reproductive tissues and assayed for bioacUve compounds by the High performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） method. Hypericin concentration ranged between 0 and 2.73 mg/g DW, chlorogenic acid 0.00-3.64 mg/g DW, rutin 0.00-3.36 mg/g DW, hyperoside 0.04- 22.42 mg/g DW, quercitrin 0.03-3.46 mg/g DW and quercetin 0.04-1.02 mg/g DW depending on ontogenetic and morphogenetic sampling. Leaves were found to be superior to stems and reproductive parts with regard to phenolic accumulation for all compounds tested while flowers accumulated the highest levels of hypericln. Quercltrln, quercetln and hypericin content in all tissues increased with advancing of developmental stages and reached their highest level during flower ontogenesis. Similarly, chlorogenic acid, hyperoside and apigenin-7-O-glucoside content in different plant parts increased during plant development, however, the highest level was observed at different stages of plant phenology for each tissue. Chlorogenic acid was not detected in stems, leaves and reproductive parts in several stages of plant phenology and its variation during plant growth showed inconsistent manner. In contrast to the other compounds examined, rutin content of stems and leaves decreased with advanc- ing of plant development and the highest level for both tissues was observed at the vegetative stage. However, content of the same compound in reproductive parts was the highest at mature fruiting. The present findings might be useful to obtain increased concentration of these natural compounds.

Quantifying post logging biomass loss using satellite images and ground measurements in Southeast Cameroon

Forest logging in the Congo Basin has led to forest fragmentation due to logging infrastructures and felling gaps. In the same vein, forest concessions in the Congo Basin have increasing interest in the rEDD＋ mechanism. However, there is little information or field data on carbon emissions from forest degradation caused by logging. To help fill this gap, Landsat 7 and 8 and SPOT 4 images of the East region of Cameroon were processed and combined with field measurements （measurement of forest roads widths, felling gaps and log yards） to assess all disturbed areas. Also, measurements of different types of forest infrastructures helped to highlight emission factors. Forest contributes to 5.18 % of the degradation of the annual allowable cut （AAC）（84.53 ha） corresponding to 4.09 % of forest carbon stock （6.92 t ha^-1）. Felling gaps constitute the primary source of degradation, represented an estimated area of 32.41 ha （2 % of the cutting area） far ahead of primary roads （18.44ha） and skid trails （16.36 ha）. Assessment of the impact of degradation under the canopy requires the use of high resolution satellite images and field surveys.

Chemical characterization of essential oil from the leaves of Callistemon viminalis(D.r.) and Melaleuca leucadendron(Linn.)

Objective: To isolate and identify the compounds in the essential oils from the leaves of Callistemon viminalis(D.r.) and Melaleuca leucadendron(Linn.) collected in Dakar,***: The essential oils from the leaves of these two myrtaceaes were extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by gas chromatograph and gas chromatography–mass ***: A total of 34 constituents were identified in the oil of Callistemon viminalis and the major compounds were 1.8-cineole(58.12%), limonene(9.72%), a-terpineol(9.56%),geranial(6.02%), d-elemene(3.53%), myrcene(2.96%) and a-pinene(2.49%).For the essential oil of Melaleuca leucadendron, 43 constituents were identified, and 1.8-cineole(28.87%), epiglobulol(23.06%), a-pinene(12.22%), limonene(11.65%) and a-terpineol(7.06%) were major ***: Considering properties of the identified major compounds, essential oils of both studied myrtaceae could be used in the medicine field including the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry.

We present a compilation of all myxomycetes recorded from Papua new Guinea(PNG)and new Caledonia(NC).Specimens were collected during field trips in September 1983–January 1984 to both territories and in August 1991,October 2007,and April 2009 to *** and dung samples for moist chamber cultures were collected during the field trips in September 1983–January 1984(PNG and NC)and in August 1991 and October 2007(NC).In addition,information from previous publications and unpublished specimens in the herbarium at the Plant Protection Instituted in Port Moresby,PNG,are included.A total of 180 species are *** the 63 species from PNG 51 are new to the country,and 123 of the 149 species from NC are new to the territory.

Objective:This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Hepatitis B antigen among newly employed staff in a Tertiary Hospital in South-South ***:The medical records of a total of 238 newly employed members of staff of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital between 2000 and 2006 were *** socio-demographic data and Hepatitis B Surface Antigen(HBSAg) results were ***:The overall prevalence of Hepatitis B Surface Antiginaemia was found to be 5.04%.The prevalence was 7.30%in males and statistically significant compared to 3.50%in ***:There is a reasonably high prevalence of HBSAg among adults prior to employment into Health Care *** poses a danger to clients seeking care in these health care facilities and other health care *** Institutions must have clear policies on engagement of new staff relating to such communicable diseases based on existing Nigerian labour laws including the Workman Compensation *** must also implement policies on universal precautions to safeguard the health workers and clients in their *** enlightenment on the National Program on Immunization(NPI) must be intensified as a strategy to reduce the prevalence of HBSAg and its attendant consequences.

Enhancing optical absorption in visible light of ZnO co-doped with europium and promethium by first-principles study through modified Becke and Johnson potential scheme

By using first-principles calculations we studied the electronic, optical and magnetic properties of ZnO co-doped with Eu and Pm. In this calculation, we used Wien2 k code based on full potential linearized augmented plane waves(FP-LAPW) method with the modified Becke-Johnson(mBJ) approximation. This correction gives good band gap compared to experimental band gap. The introduction of Eu and Pm codoping leads to an increase in the band gap. Electrons can transit easily from the valence band to the conduction band, which results in an enhancement of visible light absorption in a wider absorption range. Absorption spectra reach a high value in visible and infrared light regions. With the significance of the obtained results, the studied compounds may potentially find spintronic and optoelectronic applications.
