Indirect calorimetry to estimate energy requirements for growing and finishing Nellore bulls

Determination of nutritional requirements is the basis for diet formulation. The objectives of this study were to determine the net energy requirements for maintenance （NEro） and weight gain （NEg） in Nellore bulls during the growing and finishing phases, and to estimate efficiency of metabolizable energy （ME） utilization for maintenance and gain （km, kg）. Five Nellore bulls were housed in individual pens at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais （Belo Horizonte, Brazil） and evaluated over four experimental periods at 210, 315,378 and 454 kg shrunk body weight （SBW）, approximately. During each period, heat production （HP） was quantified by open circuit indirect calorimetry for three feeding levels： ad libitum, restricted and fasting. The NEm requirement was determined by linear regression between the Log of HP andthe ME intake （MEI） for the ad libitum and restricted levels. This requirement was also determined by quantifying fasting heat production （FHP）. The NEQ requirement was calculated by the difference between MEI and HP during ad libitum feeding. The k and kg were calculated by the relationship between net energy （NE） and ME requirements for maintenance and weight gain （MEm, MEp）, respectively. The NEm requirements per kg of metabolic empty body weight （EBW0.75） fluctuated between 348 and 517 kJ d-1, showing a decreasing trend with age, and were higher than the values reported in the literature. The NEg requirements ranged between 48.3 and 164 kJ kg-1 EBW0.75 d-1, and varied according to age and weight gain. The k values varied between 58.6 and 69.7%, while kg varied between 23.4 and 40.2%. We concluded that NEm and NEg requirements were influenced by age and possibly by the level of stress, nervousness and activity of animals into the respirometry chamber. Further studies should quantify HP with records of positional changes （time spent standing vs. lying down）. Surface topographies of cell culture substrates can be used to generate in vitro cell culture environments similar to the in vivo cell niches. In vivo, the physical properties of the extracellular matrix (ECM), such as its topography, provide physical cues that play an important role in modulating cell function. Mimicking these properties remains a challenge to provide in vitro realistic environments for cells. Artificially generated substrates’ topographies were used extensively to explore this important surface cue. More recently, the replication of natural surface topographies has been enabling to exploration of characteristics such as hierarchy and size scales relevant for cells as advanced biomimetic substrates. These substrates offer more realistic and mimetic environments regarding the topographies found in vivo. This review will highlight the use of natural surface topographies as a template to generate substrates for in-vitro cell culture. This review starts with an analysis of the main cell functions that can be regulated by the substrate’s surface topography through cell-substrate interactions. Then, we will discuss research works wherein substrates for cell biology decorated with natural surface topographies were used and investigated regarding their influence on cellular performance. At the end of this review, we will highlight the advantages and challenges of the use of natural surface topographies as a template for the generation of advanced substrates for cell culture.

This study investigated the osteogenic performance of new brushite cements obtained from Li+-dopedβ-tricalcium phosphate as a promising strategy for bone ***(Li+)is a promising trace element to encourage the migration and proliferation of adipose-derived stem cells(hASCs)and the osteogenic differentiation-related gene expression,essential for ***-situ X-ray diffraction(XrD)and in-situ 1H nuclear magnetic resonance(1H NMr)measurements proved the precipitation of brushite,as main phase,and monetite,indicating that Li+favored the formation of monetite under certain ***+was detected in the remaining pore solution in significant amounts after the completion of *** calorimetry results showed an accelerating effect of Li+,especially for low concentration of the setting retarder(phytic acid).A decrease of initial and final setting times with increasing amount of Li+was detected and setting times could be well adjusted by varying the setting retarder *** cements presented compressive mechanical strength within the ranges reported for cancellous *** vitro assays using hASCs showed normal metabolic and proliferative *** immunodetection and gene expression profile of osteogenic-related markers highlight the incorporation of Li+for increasing the in vivo bone *** osteogenic potential of Li-doped brushite cements may be recommended for further research on bone defect repair strategies.

Magnesium-based materials show great potential for producing biodegradable stents,but their high corrosion rates are a *** study investigates whether ultrasound melt treatment can change the corrosion response of an extruded AZ91D-1.0%Ca(wt.%)in Earle's Balanced Salt Solution by tailoring the intermetallics'morphology in the as-extruded *** results showed that the wires from ultrasound-treated ingots corroded faster than non-treated ones in immersion for up to 6 *** trend shifted for longer periods,and ultrasound-treated material showed lower corrosion rates and uniform corrosion,while the non-treated material displayed localized corrosion *** testing of the wires demonstrated that immersion in EBSS lowered the tensile strength and elongation at fracture due to material degradation,regardless of the processing ***,this decline was sharper in the non-treated *** findings suggest that ultrasound melt processing can be a promising method for improving the corrosion resistance of magnesium-based materials,paving the way for their use in manufacturing biodegradable stents.

Appropriate information on solar resources is very important for a variety of technological areas, such as agriculture, meteorology, forestry engineering, and water resources, particularly for an innovative technology such as solar energy. In the market entry process of an innovative technology such as solar energy, the increased and sustained deployment of this energy technology strongly depends on the economy and reliability of the solar systems installed. The economy and reliability of a system are the consequences of a well-prepared project, resulting from an accurate knowledge of the solar resource available. Therefore, knowing the potential of the solar resource accurately is not only a need but also an imperative for the larger diffusion and use of the solar energy. The existing sources of the information on radiation in MG are quite varied, both at the institutional level and in different types of publications. The publications containing this information are project reports, internal reports of institutions, and several magazines. Thus, the quality of the data varies considerably, the information presents spatial and temporal discontinuity;moreover, the instruments and the measurement units are not standardised. The general objective of this paper is to recover, to qualify, to standardize, and to make available the best information from the current existing solar resource in MG, Brazil, either in the form of isoline charts of solar radiation or a numerical database. In this paper, the procedure to elaborate the maps of daily solar radiation and insolation, along with the monthly and annual averages, is described. We present one map with the localisation of the recording stations in addition to one annual and 12 monthly contour maps. The map of the daily global solar irradiation and the annual average determined in this project show that solar radiation on the state of Minas Gerais ranges from 4.5 to 6.5 kWh/m2. Burnett Order Stress and Spatially-Dependent Boundary Conditions for the Lattice Boltzmann Method

The impact of ancestral population size and incomplete lineage sorting on Bayesian estimation of species divergence times

Although the effects of the coalescent process on sequence divergence and genealogies are well understood, the vir- tual majority of studies that use molecular sequences to estimate times of divergence among species have failed to account for the coalescent process. Here we study the impact of ancestral population size and incomplete lineage sorting on Bayesian estimates of species divergence times under the molecular clock when the inference model ignores the coalescent process. Using a combination of mathematical analysis, computer simulations and analysis of real data, we find that the errors on estimates of times and the molecular rate can be substantial when ancestral populations are large and when there is substantial incomplete lineage sorting. For example, in a simple three-species case, we find that if the most precise fossil calibration is placed on the root of the phylogeny, the age of the internal node is overestimated, while if the most precise calibration is placed on the internal node, then the age of the root is underestimated. In both cases, the molecular rate is overestimated. Using simulations on a phylogeny of nine species, we show that substantial errors in time and rate estimates can be obtained even when dating ancient divergence events. We analyse the hominoid phylogeny and show that estimates of the neutral mutation rate obtained while ignoring the coalescent are too high. Using a coalescent-based technique to obtain geological times of divergence, we obtain estimates of the mutation rate that are within experimental estimates and we also obtain substantially older divergence times within the phylogeny [Current Zoology 61 （5）： 874-885, 2015].

Despite the National Policy for Solid Waste(PNrS)in 2010,nothing has changed to waste disposal in *** to reach 100%of all Municipal Solid Waste(MSW)collected and treated in landfills by Aug.2nd,2014,until nowadays,42%of this total remains in *** the most important national economic region treating its urban waste in landfills,what it has is no more than 4%of recycling and its landfills reaching the *** other ones is getting harder year by year,due to water reservoirs around the region,high freight costs,waste disposal and the severe control of emissions associated with its *** article comes to break the paradigm of investment and profitability proposing an alternative to the land-use,achieving higher rates of *** economic viability,carried out through well-known financial variables and Monte Carlo analysis,has taken into account proven local waste characteristics and market prices for recyclables and energy without *** considered a proposal highly intensive in capital and people,the revenues from the sales would be enough to guarantee the viability of 100%equity with Irr of 33.7%and rOI of 24.5%per year within the confidence of 99%.
