The clinical characteristics and risk factors for necrotizing soft tissue infection in children

Importance: Necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) is a serious infectious disease. However, the early clinical manifestations and indicators of NSTI in children are still unclear.Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics and risk factors of NSTI in pediatric patients.Methods: A total of 127 children with skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) were treated at our hospital and divided into two groups: the NSTI group and the non-NSTI group, based on their discharge diagnosis from January 2011 to December 2022. Then, we collected and analyzed the clinical characteristics and risk factors of all patients, including sex and age, disease inducement, admission temperature, local skin manifestations, infection site, the presence of sepsis, bacterial culture, and laboratory indicators.Results: In our study, there was a statistical difference in the age distribution and disease inducement between NSTI and non-NSTI groups. The occurrence of local skin manifestations (blisters/bullae and ecchymosis) and the presence of sepsis significantly increased in the NSTI group compared to the non-NSTI group. Additionally, only the platelet count on laboratory tests was statistically different between the NSTI and non-NSTI groups. Finally, the logistic regression analysis suggested that local skin manifestations such as blisters/bullae, and ecchymosis, as well as the presence of sepsis, were identified as risk factors for NSTI.Interpretation: Children with SSTI and skin manifestations such as blisters/bullae, ecchymosis, and the presence of sepsis are at a higher risk of developing NSTI. These symptoms serve as useful indicators for early detection of NSTI.

Objective:The efficacy of medications for Parkinson’s disease(PD)tend to decline over time,which has a serious impact on patients’health and quality of life.To some extent,traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)can resolve the distressing problem of ineffective dopaminergic medication in PD patients.The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitude,acceptance,and independent predictors of TCM in PD patients admitted to the outpatient department of a tertiary hospital.Methods:A cross-sectional study of PD patients was conducted in the outpatient department of a large tertiary hospital in Beijing from March 2022 to June 2023.A self-report questionnaire was developed to investigate PD patients’attitudes and acceptance of TCM based on the questionnaire.Multivariate logistic regression analyses were also performed to further clarify the independent predictors influencing patients’adoption of TCM therapy.Results:A total of 397 patients completed the questionnaire,of which 78.09%were willing to be treated with TCM and 21.91%indicated that they were not willing to use TCM.Multifactorial logistic regression analysis showed that several parameters were correlated with a patient’s willingness to include TCM in their therapeutic regime.These included education level of a bachelor’s degree(odds ratio[OR)=8.554;95%confidence interval[CI]:4.112–17.794;P<0.001,vs junior high school education),living in an urban setting(OR=8.022;95%CI:4.577–14.060;P<0.001,vs rural),having other underlying diseases(OR=5.126;95%CI:3.078–8.537;P<0.001,vs none),having previously used TCM(OR=3.083;95%CI:1.852–5.134;P<0.001,vs not used),believing that TCM therapy is safe(OR=3.530;95%CI:1.446–8.616;P=0.006,vs not thought),believing that TCM therapy is effective(OR=3.859;95%CI:1.482–10.047;P=0.006,vs not understood),and being willing to discuss ongoing TCM therapy with an attending physician(OR=62.468;95%CI:30.350–128.574;P<0.001,vs not informed).Conclusion:This study initially investigated the acceptance,attitude,and independent predictors of TCM use

The increasingly serious environmental challenges have gradually aroused people's interest in electric vehicles.Over the last decade,governments and automakers have collaborated on the manufacturing of electric vehicles with high performance.Cutting-edge battery technologies are pivotal for the performance of electric vehicles.Zn-air batteries are considered as potential power batteries for electric vehicles due to their high capacity.Zn-air battery researches can be classified into three categories:primary batteries,mechanically rechargeable batteries,and chemically rechargeable batteries.The majority of current studies aim at developing and improving chemically rechargeable and mechanically rechargeable Zn-air batteries.Researchers have tried to use catalytic materials design and device design for Zn-air batteries to make it possible for their applications in electric vehicles.This review will highlight the state-of-the-art in primary batteries,mechanically rechargeable batteries,and chemically rechargeable batteries,revealing the prospects of Zn-air batteries for electric vehicles.

A Review on Engineering Design for Enhancing Interfacial Contact in Solid-State Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

The utilization of solid-state electrolytes(SSEs)presents a promising solution to the issues of safety concern and shuttle effect in Li–S batteries,which has garnered significant interest recently.However,the high interfacial impedances existing between the SSEs and the electrodes(both lithium anodes and sulfur cathodes)hinder the charge transfer and intensify the uneven deposition of lithium,which ultimately result in insufficient capacity utilization and poor cycling stability.Hence,the reduction of interfacial resistance between SSEs and electrodes is of paramount importance in the pursuit of efficacious solid-state batteries.In this review,we focus on the experimental strategies employed to enhance the interfacial contact between SSEs and electrodes,and summarize recent progresses of their applications in solidstate Li–S batteries.Moreover,the challenges and perspectives of rational interfacial design in practical solid-state Li–S batteries are outlined as well.We expect that this review will provide new insights into the further technique development and practical applications of solid-state lithium batteries.

Study of deep transportation and plugging performance of deformable gel particles in porous media

Deformable gel particles(DGPs) possess the capability of deep profile control and flooding. However, the deep migration behavior and plugging mechanism along their path remain unclear. Breakage, an inevitable phenomenon during particle migration, significantly impacts the deep plugging effect. Due to the complexity of the process, few studies have been conducted on this subject. In this paper, we conducted DGP flow experiments using a physical model of a multi-point sandpack under various injection rates and particle sizes. Particle size and concentration tests were performed at each measurement point to investigate the transportation behavior of particles in the deep part of the reservoir. The residual resistance coefficient and concentration changes along the porous media were combined to analyze the plugging performance of DGPs. Furthermore, the particle breakage along their path was revealed by analyzing the changes in particle size along the way. A mathematical model of breakage and concentration changes along the path was established. The results showed that the passage after breakage is a significant migration behavior of particles in porous media. The particles were reduced to less than half of their initial size at the front of the porous media. Breakage is an essential reason for the continuous decreases in particle concentration, size, and residual resistance coefficient. However, the particles can remain in porous media after breakage and play a significant role in deep plugging. Higher injection rates or larger particle sizes resulted in faster breakage along the injection direction, higher degrees of breakage, and faster decreases in residual resistance coefficient along the path. These conditions also led to a weaker deep plugging ability. Smaller particles were more evenly retained along the path, but more particles flowed out of the porous media, resulting in a poor deep plugging effect. Rare earth fluorescent nanoprobes with minimal side effects enable tumor microenvironment activation for chemotherapy

Chemotherapy,the use of antitumor drugs to kill cancer cells,is currently one of the most effective treatments for cancer.However,serious toxic side effects caused by long-term drug accumulation can cause significant damage to the body,which limits the clinical application of antitumor drugs.In this study,a novel RENPs@DOX-Fe nanoprobe(NP) was constructed by coating the surface of rare earth nanomaterials(NaLuF_(4):Yb,Er) with a complex formed by doxorubicin(DOX) and iron ion(Ⅲ).Due to the low toxicity of anthracycline-metal complexes,the damage to normal cells is reduced.The unique acidic microenvironment in tumor cells facilitates the decomposition and gradual release of DOX from the DOX-Fe complex.In addition,the DOX-Fe complex can convert near-infrared(NIR) light into heat energy,which promotes the decomposition of the complex,further enhancing the release of DOX in the tumor environment.The change of ratio fluorescence of rare earth nanomaterials at 660 and 1550 nm after DOX release enables visual monitoring of drug release,which can potentially improve the chemotherapeutic effect.In vitro experiments established that RENPs@DOX-Fe NPs with NIR illumination had good therapeutic efficacy in tumors.This work provides new insights into designing tumor microenvironment-responsive nanoprobes for chemotherapy with minimal side effects.

Retrograde adeno-associated viruses(AAVs)are capable of infecting the axons of projection neurons and serve as a powerful tool for the anatomical and functional characterization of neural networks.However,few retro-grade AAV capsids have been shown to offer access to cor-tical projection neurons across different species and enable the manipulation of neural function in non-human primates(NHPs).Here,we report the development of a novel retro-grade AAV capsid,AAV-DJ8R,which efficiently labeled cortical projection neurons after local administration into the striatum of mice and macaques.In addition,intrastriatally injected AAV-DJ8R mediated opsin expression in the mouse motor cortex and induced robust behavioral alterations.Moreover,AAV-DJ8R markedly increased motor cortical neuron firing upon optogenetic light stimulation after viral delivery into the macaque putamen.These data demonstrate the usefulness of AAV-DJ8R as an efficient retrograde tracer for cortical projection neurons in rodents and NHPs and indicate its suitability for use in conducting functional interrogations.

Nowadays,tungsten oxides,as a typical transition metal oxide,are widely and intensively investigated owing to their excellent material properties and device properties.Controlling oxygen defi ciency in tungsten oxides is typically the key to enhance their performances for a variety of critical technological applications.With a gradual increase of oxygen defi ciency,various non-stoichiometric tungsten oxides can be formed by re-adjustment of the atomic arrangement,which exhibits superior performances than their traditional stoichiometric counterparts.This review mainly focuses on the recent advances in oxygen-defi cient tungsten oxides from the point of atomic structures,including the forming mechanism of non-stoichiometric tungsten oxides and the superiority of these oxygen-defi cient tungsten oxides in energy-related devices.Finally,the challenge and perspective of oxygen-defi cient tungsten oxides are also discussed.

Decreased eggshell strength caused by impairment of uterine calcium transport coincide with higher bone minerals and quality in aged laying hens

Background Deteriorations in eggshell and bone quality are major challenges in aged laying hens.This study compared the differences of eggshell quality,bone parameters and their correlations as well as uterine physiologi-cal characteristics and the bone remodeling processes of hens laying eggs of different eggshell breaking strength to explore the mechanism of eggshell and bone quality reduction and their interaction.A total of 24074-week-old Hy-line Brown laying hens were selected and allocated to a high(HBS,44.83±1.31 N)or low(LBS,24.43±0.57 N)eggshell breaking strength group.Results A decreased thickness,weight and weight ratio of eggshells were observed in the LBS,accompanied with ultrastructural deterioration and total Ca reduction.Bone quality was negatively correlated with eggshell quality,marked with enhanced structures and increased components in the LBS.In the LBS,the mammillary knobs and effective layer grew slowly.At the initiation stage of eggshell calcification,a total of 130 differentially expressed genes(DEGs,122 upregulated and 8 downregulated)were identified in the uterus of hens in the LBS relative to those in the HBS.These DEGs were relevant to apoptosis due to the cellular Ca overload.Higher values of p62 protein level,caspase-8 activity,Bax protein expression and lower values of Bcl protein expression and Bcl/Bax ratio were seen in the LBS.TUNEL assay and hematoxylin-eosin staining showed a significant increase in TUNEL-positive cells and tissue damages in the uterus of the LBS.Although few DEGs were identified at the growth stage,similar uterine tissue damages were also observed in the LBS.The expressions of runt-related transcription factor 2 and osteocal-cin were upregulated in humeri of the LBS.Enlarged diameter and more structural damages of endocortical bones and decreased ash were observed in femurs of the HBS.Conclusion The lower eggshell breaking strength may be attributed to a declined Ca transport due to uterine tissue damages,which could affect eggshell calcification and lead to

Hirschsprung's disease(HsCR)is the most common type of developmental gastrointestinal malformation causing intestinal obstruction in children,with an incidence of 1/5000 in live births.1 it is characterized by the absence of intrinsic ganglion cells in the myenteric and submucosal plexuses of the distal gastrointestinal tract,leading to the dysregulation of smooth muscle contraction/relaxation and resulting in intestinal obstruction.Depending on the length of the aganglionic intestine,HSCR can be categorized into short-segmental HSCR(S-HSCR),which affects up to the sigmoid colon from the anus,and long-segmental HSCR(LHSCR),which affects beyond the sigmoid colon.1 In some rare conditions,aganglionic lesions can affect the full length of the colon or even the whole intestine.
