Background and Aims:Intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be treated by transarterial chemoem-bolization (TACE).However,there appear to be side effects,such as induction of proangiogenic factors,*** endothelial growth factor (VEGF),which have been shown to be associated with a poor *** prospective study was designed to compare serum VEGF level response after TACE with different embolic agents in patients with ***:Patients were assigned to one of three different TACE regimens:degradable starch microspheres (DSM) TACE,drugeluting bead (DEBDOX) TACE or lipiodol TACE (cTACE).All patients received 50 mg doxorubicin/m2 body surface area (BSA) during *** VEGF levels were assessed before TACE treatment,24 h post-treatment and 4 weeks ***:Twenty-two patients with 30 TACE treatments were *** to baseline VEGF levels,a marked increase was observed for 24 h post-TACE (164% of baseline level) and during the 4-week follow-up (170% of baseline level) only for the cTACE arm (p levels were only 114% and 123% for DEBDOX and 121% and 124% for DSM,***:Conventional TACE using lipiodol shows marked increase in blood levels of the proangiogenic factor VEGF,while DEBDOX and DSM TACE induce only a moderate VEGF response.

Convergence properties of trust-region methods for unconstrained nonconvex optimization is considered in the case where information on the objective function＇s local curvature is incomplete, in the sense that it may be restricted to a fixed set of ＂test directions＂ and may not be available at every iteration. It is shown that convergence to local ＂weak＂ minimizers can still be obtained under some additional but algorithmically realistic conditions. These theoretical results are then applied to recursive multigrid trust-region methods, which suggests a new class of algorithms with guaranteed second-order convergence properties.

Native and exotic seed dispersal by the stone marten(Martes foina):implications for the regeneration of a relict climactic forest in central Portugal

The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal that often consumes fleshy fruits,thus potentially promoting seed *** present study was developed in Bussaco National Forest,central Portugal,and aimed to assess the potential role of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic plants in different forest landscape *** from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were collected monthly and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery,following a randomized experimental *** emergence was monitored *** linear models were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ulmifolius,Arbutus unedo and Celtis australis)and 1 exotic plant species with invasive behavior(Prunus laurocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantly increased and accelerated the germination of the native *** but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive *** suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native plant ***,although the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species,the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potentially contribute to the proliferation of *** study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions,enabling for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management.

Cr（V）involvementin the toxicity pathway of testicular damage

AIM:The functional integrity of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) in male mice exposed to Cr(V) was studied in order to clarify the mechanism underlying testicular injury.METHODS:Adult male mice were subcutaneously injected repeated doses of 8.02 micromol (0.5 ml) of Cr/*** for 5 days. Animals receiving a similar volume of bis(hydroxyethyl)-aminotris(hydroxymethyl)methane buffer (BT) were used as controls. The animals were sacrificed on day 6 and small fragments of seminiferous tubules, approximately 8-10 mm length, were incised and sutured at both ends. They were exposed in vitro to horseradish peroxidase-containing culture medium for 10 minutes. Tissues were then fixed and processed for ultrastructural studies.RESUlTS:Controls and Cr(V)-treated group resulted in the uptake of the tracer by Sertoli cells. However, the major finding consisted in the permeability of the BTB only in the Cr(V)-group, as evidenced by the presence of the tracer within the junctions between the neighbouring Sertoli cells.CONClUSION:The BTB is disrupted in mice submitted to Cr(V). The permeability of the BTB is a crucial feature to be investigated for the understanding of lesions within the seminiferous tubule.

We study a subclass of the May–leonard stochastic model with an arbitrary,even number of species,leading to the rise of two competing partnerships where individuals are *** carrying out a series of accurate numerical stochastic simulations,we show that alliances compete each other forming spatial domains bounded by interfaces of empty *** solve numerically the mean field equations associated with the stochastic model in one and two spatial *** demonstrate that the stationary interface profile presents topological properties which are related to the asymptotic spatial distribution of species of enemy alliances far away from the interface ***,we introduce a theoretical approach to model the formation of stable interfaces using spontaneous breaking of a discrete *** show that all the results provided by the soliton topological model,presented here for the very first time,are in agreement with the stochastic simulations and may be used as a tool for understanding the complex biodiversity in nature.

The new ternary YbZn0.7Inl.3 compound was synthesized in evacuated quartz ampoules at 900 ℃, followed by annealing at 400 ℃. It crystallized in the UHg2 structure type with a=0.47934（5） nm, c=0.36955（5） nm, V=0.073535（15） nm3. The shortest distances between the atoms in this structure were equal to 0.3696 nm （Yb-Yb）, 0.3328 nm （Yb-M） and 0.2767 nm （M M）, respectively. Magnetization measurements indicated that the title compound exhibited a paramagnetic behavior down to 2 K, with antiferromagnetic-like interactions. Calculated magnetic moment for YbZn0.7inl.3 （μeft =3.86μB/Yb） could indicate mixed valence state of Yb.

Gemcitabine in elderly patients with advanced pancreatic cancer

AIM： TO assess feasibility, tolerability and efficacy of gemcitabine-based chemotherapy in patients ≥ 75 years old with advanced pancreatic cancer. METHODS： All consecutive patients ≥ 75 years old with advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma were included in this retrospective study. Necessary criteria to receive chemotherapy were： performance status 0-2, adequate biological parameters and no serious comorbidities. Other patients received best supportive care （BSC）. RESUlTS： Thirty-eight patients （53% women, median age 78 years, range 75-84） with pancreatic cancer （metastatic： n = 20, locally advanced： n = 18） were studied. Among them, 30 （79%） were able to receive chemotherapy [median number： 9 infusions （1-45）]. Six patients （23%） had at least one episode of grade 3 neutropenia and one patient developed a grade 3 hemolytic-uremic syndrome. No toxic death occurred. Three patients （11%） had a partial tumor response, 13 （46%） had a stable disease and 12 （43%） had a tumor progression. Median survival was 9.1 mo （metastatic： 6.9 too, locally advanced： 11.4 too）. CONClUSION： Tolerance and efficacy of gemcitabinebased chemotherapy is acceptable in elderly patients in good condition, with similar results to younger patients.

Performance of evolutionary optimized machine learning for modeling total organic carbon in core samples of shale gas fields

Rock samples'TOC content is the best indicator of the organic matter in source *** origin rock samples’analysis is used to calculate it manually by *** method requires time and resources because it relies on samples from many well intervals in source ***,research has been done to aid this *** learning algorithms can estimate total organic carbon instead of well logs and stratigraphic *** light of these efforts,the current work present a study on automating the total organic carbon estimation using machine learning approaches improved by an evolutionary methodology to give the model flexibility and *** algorithms,differential evolution,particle swarm optimization,grey wolf optimization,artificial bee colony,and evolution strategies were used to improve machine learning models to predict *** six metaheuristics were integrated into four machine learning methods:extreme learning machine,elastic net linear model,linear support vector regression,and multivariate adaptive regression *** samples from the YuDong-Nan shale gas field,located in the Sichuan basin,were used to evaluate the hybrid *** findings show that combining machine learning models with an evolutionary algorithms in a hybrid fashion produce flexible models that accurately predict *** results show that,independent of the metaheuristic used to guide the model selection,optimized extreme learning machines attained the best performance scores according to six *** hybrid models can be used in exploratory geological research,particularly for unconventional oil and gas resources.
