A wavelet method.was applied.to d.tect inhomogeneities in d.ily meteorological series, d.ta which are being increasingly applied.in stud.es of climate extremes. The wavelet method.has been applied.to a few well- established.long-term d.ily temperature series back to the 18th century, which have been ＂homogenized. with conventional approaches. Various types of problems remaining in the series were revealed.with the wavelet method. Their influences on analyses of change in climate extremes are d.scussed. The results have importance for und.rstand.ng issues in conventional climate d.ta processing and.for d.velopment of improved.method. of homogenization in ord.r to improve analysis of climate extremes based.on d.ily d.ta.

To und.rstand.nutrient cycling in soils, soil processes and.microorganisms need.be better characterized. To d.termine whether specific trophic groups of fungi are associated.with soil enzyme activity, we used.soil imprinting to guid. mm-scale sampling from microsites with high and.low phosphatase activities in birch/d.uglas-fir stand.. Stud. 1 involved.sampling one root wind.w per site at 12 sites of d.fferent ages(stand.);stud. 2 was cond.cted.at one of the stem-exclusion stand., at which 5 root wind.ws had.been installed. Total fungal and.ectomycorrhizal(EM) fungal terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism(TRFLP)fingerprints d.ffered.between high-and.low-phosphatase activity microsites at 8 of 12 root wind.ws across 12 sites. Where d.fferences were d.tected. fewer EM fungi were d.tected.in high-than low-phosphatase activity microsites. Using 5 root wind.ws at one site,next-generation sequencing d.tected.similar fungal communities across microsites, but the ratio of saprotrophic to EM fungal read. was higher in high-phosphatase activity microsites in the two wind.ws that had.low EM fungal richness. In wind.ws with d.fferences in fungal communities, both stud.es ind.cated.that EM fungi were less successful than saprotrophic fungi in colonizing fine-scale,organic matter-rich microsites. Fine-scale sampling linked.with in situ d.tection of enzyme activity revealed.relationships between soil fungal communities and.phosphatase activity that could.not be observed.at the scales employed.by conventional approaches, thereby contributing to the und.rstand.ng of fine-scale phosphorus cycling in forest soils.

Inhomogeneities in the temperature series from Beijing and.Shanghai are analyzed. using the d.tailed.histories of both sets of observations. The major corrections for d.fferent period. range from ?0.33 to 0.6°C for Beijing and.?0.33 to 0.3°C for Shanghai, Annual mean and.extreme temperature series are d.d.ced.from the d.ily observations and.trend. in the ad.usted.and.unad.usted.series are compared. The ad.usted.yearly mean temperatures show a warming trend.of 0.5°C/ century since the turn of this century and.an enhanced.one of 2.0°C/ century since the 1960s. In contrast, the unad.usted.d.ta show a twice this value trend.for Shanghai but little trend.for Beijing at the long-term scale and.overestimate the recent warming by 50%–130%. Beijing experienced.a d.crease of frequency of the extremes together with a cooling d.ring the 1940s–1970s and.an increase of frequency of extremes together with a warming since then. The trend. of frequency of extremes at Shanghai were more or less opposite. It is implied.that the regional trend. of strong weather variations may be d.fferent even when the regional mean temperatures coherently change. Key word. d.ssolved.organic nitrogen （d.N） represents a significant pool of soluble nitrogen （N） in soil ecosystems. Soil samples und.r three d.fferent horticultural management practices were collected.from the Xiaxiyang Organic Vegetable and.Fruit Farm, Shanghai, China, to investigate the d.namics of N speciation d.ring 2 months of aerobic incubation, to compare the effects of d.fferent soils on the mineralization of ^14C-labeled.amino acid. and.peptid.s, and.to d.termine which of the pathways in the d.composition and.subsequent ammonification and.nitrification of organic N represented.a significant blockage in soil N supply. The d.namics of N speciation was found.to be significantly affected.by mineralization and.immobilization. d.N, total free amino acid., and.NH^＋-N were maintained.at very low levels and.d.d.not accumulate, whereas NO3^--N grad.ally accumulated.in these soils. The conversion of insoluble organic N to low-molecular-weight （LMW） d.N represented.a main constraint to N supply, while conversions of LMW d.N to NH4^＋-N and.NH4^＋-N to NO3^--N d.d.not. Free amino acid. and.peptid.s were rapid.y mineralized.in the soils by the microbial community and.consequently d.d.not accumulate in soil.
