Basin has be.n docume.te. as having ne.ative.impacts on native.planktivore.populations. Silve. carp have.the.pote.tial, to alte. the.trophic food we. through ne.ative.inte.actions with native.planktivore. in large.rive. syste.s. Due.to incre.sing Silve. carp range., inte.actions be.we.n Silve. carp and othe. native.planktivore. is like.y to incre.se. One.abundant native.planktivore.that is ofte. found in similar habitats as Silve. carp is Gizzard shad(Dorosoma ce.e.ianum). Pote.tial compe.ition for re.ource. e.ists be.ause.of ove.lapping habitat use.and forage. Give. the.similaritie. be.we.n the.e.two planktivore., we.sought to e.aluate.daily growth rate. and de.e.mine.hatch date. of age.0 Silve. carp and Gizzard shad in the.Middle.Mississippi Rive.. Silve. carp and Gizzard shad we.e.colle.te. from the.Middle.Mississippi Rive. using an e.e.trifie. surface.trawl from June.through Se.te.be. with size. ranging from 21—65 mm total le.gth for Gizzard shad and 24—85 mm total le.gth for Silve. carp. A sample.of age.0 fish(n=697) was colle.te. at the.e.d of the.growing se.son including 292 Gizzard shad and 405 Silve. carp. Size.structure.total le.gth in mm) of Silve. carp(49.05±0.41; ± Se. was significantly gre.te.(T= –16.43, df=695, Pe. we.e.similar be.we.n Silve. carp(July 26 th to August 18 th) and Gizzard shad(July 28 th to August 19 th). Growth of Silve. carp(2.24 mm pe. day) was significantly gre.te.(Pe. day). Mortality was similar be.we.n Silve. carp(28.1%)and Gizzard shad(25.1%) at this e.rly life.stage. Silve. carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix we.e.introduce. into the.U.S. to control wate. quality in aquaculture.ponds. From this point of origin, silve. carp e.cape. into ne.rby rive.s through multiple.flood e.e.ts. Be.ause.of the.r docume.te. ne.ative.e.fe.ts on native.biota, silve. carp have.be.n labe.e. as proble.atic. The.e.ore. e.aluating the.biology and e.ology of the.e.non-indige.ous spe.ie. is critical. Multiple.parame.e.s are.ne.de. to e.aluate.silve. carp populations(le.gth, we.ght, age. and se.). Furthe.more. de.e.oping me.hods for rapidly acquiring the.e.data are.ne.de.. In re.ation to se. de.e.mination, se.ual dimorphism was obse.ve. whe.e.male. e.hibit distinct pe.toral fin ray fe.ture.. Spe.ifically, male. have.pronounce. ridge. or a "rough patch" on the.dorsal surface.of pe.toral fins. The.e.ore. to te.t if this was an applicable.way of de.e.mining silve. carp ge.de.; silve. carp we.e.colle.te. from Midwe.te.n U.S. rive.s(N=2015) in the.fall of 2011(N=870), spring of 2012(N=645), winte. of 2013—2014(N=202) and summe.2015(N=323) via e.e.trofishing. For e.ch silve. carp colle.te., pre.e.ce.e.g., rough patch) or abse.ce.e.g.,smooth) of pronounce. ridge. on the.top side.of the.pe.toral fins was re.orde., and an incision was made.in the.body cavity to ide.tify ge.de.. Base. on the.re.ults of our e.aluation, ge.de. was corre.tly ide.tifie. ove.99% of the.time.2006 out of 2015) base. on the.pe.toral fin dimorphism. In the.sample. take. in the.winte. of 2013—2014 and summe. of 2015, accuracy for silve. carp shorte. than 300 mm and longe. than 800 mm was 53.7%(19 out of 41) while.accuracy for silve. carp be.we.n 300 mm and 800 mm total le.gth was 98.9%(289 out of 292). This study also sought to inve.tigate.whe.he. mate.nal die.s supple.e.te. with fishme.l(FM) rich in ome.a-3 polyunsaturate. fatty acids(PUFAs) offe. prote.tion to the.fe.us whe. subje.te. to mate.nal e.dotoxin stre.s. Using RT-qPCR, re.ative.mRNA e.pre.sion was asse.se. in both fe.al lambs and 6-month-old lambs from dams supple.e.te. with soybe.n me.l(SM) or FM and challe.ge. with e.the. e.dotoxin or saline. From this it was found that fe.al mine.alocorticoid re.e.tor(MR) ge.e.e.pre.sion had a te.de.cy to be.alte.e. during e.dotoxin challe.ge. howe.e., in the.6-month-old offspring, MR and glucocorticoid re.e.tor(GR) ge.e.e.pre.sion we.e.diffe.e.tly alte.e. across tre.tme.t groups.
