Taking into account anisotropy, nonparabolicity of the conduction band, and geometrical confinement, we discuss the heavy-hole excitonic states in a strained GaxIn1-xAs/GaAs quantum dot for various Ga alloy contents. The strained quantum dot is considered as a spherical InAs dot surrounded by a GaAs barrier material. The dependence of the effective excitonic g-factor as a function of dot radius and Ga ion content is numerically measured. Interband optical energy with and without the parabolic effect is computed using structural confinement. The interband matrix element for different Ga concentrations is also calculated. The oscillator strength of interband transitions on the dot radius is studied at different Ga concentrations in the GaxIn1-xAs/GaAs quantum dot. Heavy-hole excitonic absorption spectra are recorded for various Ga alloy contents in the GaxIn1-xAs/GaAs quantum dot. Results show that oscillator strength diminishes when dot size decreases because of the dominance of the quantum size effect. Furthermore, exchange enhancement and exchange sDlitting increase as exciton confinement inereases.

The basement of the Romanian Carpathians is made of neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic peri- Gondwanan terranes variably involved in the Variscan orogeny, similarly to other basement terrains of Europe. They were hardly dismembered during the Alpine orogeny and traditionally have their own names in the three Carpathian areas. The Danubian domain of the South Carpathians comprises the Dragsan and Lainici-Paiius peri-Amazonian terranes. The Dragsan terrane originated within the ocean surrounding Rodinia and docked with Rodinia at -800 Ma. It does not contain Cadomian magmatism and consequently it is classified as an Avalonian extra-Cadomian terrane, The Lainici-Pfiius terrane is a Ganderian fragment strongly modified by Cadomian subduction-related magmatism, It is attached to the Moesia platform. The TisoviD terrane is an ophiolite that marks the boundary between Drfagsan and Lainici-Paius terranes. The other basement terranes of the Romanian Carpathians originated close to the Ordovician north- African orogen, as a result of the eastern Rheic Ocean opening and closure. Except for the Sebes-Lotru terrane that includes a lower metamorphic unit of Cadomian age, all the other terranes （Bretila, Tulghes, negrisoara and Rebra in the East Carpathians, Somes, Biharia and Baia de Aries in the Apuseni mountains, Fagaras, Leaota, Carat and Pades in the South Carpathians） represent late Cambrian-Ordovician rock assemblages. Their provenance, is probably within paleo-nortbeast Africa, close to the Arabian-nubian shield. The late Cambrian-Ordovician terranes are defined here as Carpathian-type terranes. According to their lithostratigraphy and origin, some are of continental margin magmatic arc setting, whereas others formed in rift and back-arc environment and closed to passive continental margin settings. Land plants and algae form a supergroup, the Archaeplastida, believed to be monophyletic. We report the results of an analysis of the phylogeny of putative globins in the currently available genomes to bacterial and other eu- karyote hemoglobins （Hbs）. Archaeplastida genomes have 3/3 and 2/2 Hbs, with the land plant genomes having group 2 2/ 2 Hbs, except for the unexpected occurrence of two group 1 2/2 Hbs in Ricinus communis. Bayesian analysis shows that plant 3/3 Hbs are related to vertebrate neuroglobins and bacterial flavohemoglobins （FHbs）. We sought to define the bacterial groups, whose ancestors shared the precursors of Archaeplastida Hbs, via Bayesian and neighbor-joining anal- yses based on COBALTalignment of representative sets of bacterial 3/3 FHb-like globins and group I and 2 2/2 Hbs with the corresponding Archaeplastida Hbs. The results suggest that the Archaeplastida 3/3 and group 1 2/2 Hbs could have orig- inated from the horizontal gene transfers （HGTs） that accompanied the two generally accepted endosymbioses of a pro- teobacterium and a cyanobacterium with a eukaryote ancestor. In contrast, the origin of the group 2 212 Hbs unexpectedly appears to involve HGT from a bacterium ancestral to Chloroflexi, Deinococcales, Bacilli, and Actinomycetes. Furthermore, although intron positions and phases are mostly conserved among the land plant 3/3 and 2/2 globin genes, introns are absent in the algal 3/3 genes and intron positions and phases are highly variable in their 2/2 genes. Thus, introns are irrelevant to globin evolution in Archaeplastida.

Photodetectors operating at the wavelength in the visible spectrum are key components in high-performance optoelectronic *** this work,massive nonlinearities in amorphous silicon p-i-n photodiodes enabled by the photogating are presented,resulting in responsivities up to 744 mA/W at blue *** detectors exhibit significant responsivity gains at optical modulation frequencies exceeding MHz and a more than 60-fold enhanced spectral response compared to the non-gated *** detection limits down to 10.4 nW/mm^(2) and mean signal-to-noise ratio enhancements of 8.5dB are demonstrated by illuminating the sensor with an additional 6.6μW/mm^(2) red ***-optical simulations verify photocarrier modulation due to defect-induced field screening to be the origin of such high responsivity *** experimental results validate the theory and enable the development of commercially viable and complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS)compatible high responsivity photodetectors operating in the visible range for low-light level imaging and detection.

The management of complications in liver disease is often complex and *** has undergone a period of rapid expansion with numerous novel and specialized endoscopic modalities that are of increasing value in the investigation and management of the patient with liver *** this review,relevant literature search and expert opinions have been used to provide a brief overview and update of the current endoscopic management of patients with liver disease and portal *** main areas covered are safety of endoscopy in patients with liver disease,the use of standard endoscopy for the treatment of varices and the role of new endoscopic modalities such as endoscopic ultrasound,esophageal capsule,argon plasma coagulation,spyglass and endomicroscopy in the investigation and treatment of liver-related gastrointestinal and biliary *** is clear that the role of the endoscopy in liver disease is well beyond that of just treating *** the technology in endoscopy expands,so does the role of the endoscopist in liver disease.

Fungi provide ecological and environmental services to humans, as well as health and nutritional benefits, and are vital to numerousindustries. Fermented food and beverage products from fungi are circulating in the market, generating billions of ***, the highest potential monetary value of fungi is their role in blue carbon trading because of their ability to sequesterlarge amounts of carbon in the soil. There are no conclusive estimates available on the global monetary value of fungi, primarilybecause there are limited data for extrapolation. This study outlines the contribution of fungi to the global economy and providesa first attempt at quantifying the global monetary value of fungi. Our estimate of USD 54.57 trillion provides a starting point thatcan be analysed and improved, highlighting the significance of fungi and providing an appreciation of their value. This paperidentifies the different economically valuable products and services provided by fungi. By giving a monetary value to all importantfungal products, services, and industrial applications underscores their significance in biodiversity and conservation. Furthermore,if the value of fungi is well established, they will be considered in future policies for effective ecosystem management.

Testicular cancer seminoma is one of the most common types of cancer among men of reproductive *** with this condition usually present reduced semen quality,even before initiating cancer ***,the underlying mechanisms by which testicular cancer seminoma affects male fertility are largely *** aim of this study was to investigate alterations in the sperm proteome of men with seminoma undergoing sperm banking before starting cancer therapy,in comparison to healthy proven fertile men(control group).A routine semen analysis was conducted before cryopreservation of the samples(n=15 per group).Men with seminoma showed a decrease in sperm motility(P=0.019),total motile count(P=0.001),concentration(P=0.003),and total sperm count(P=0.001).Quantitative proteomic analysis identified 393 differentially expressed proteins between the study *** proteins involved in spermatogenesis,sperm function,binding of sperm to the oocyte,and fertilization were selected for validation by western *** confirmed the underexpression of heat shock-related 70 kDa protein 2(P=0.041),ubiquinol-cytochrome C reductase core protein 2(P=0.026),and testis-specific sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit alpha-4(P=0.016),as well as the overexpression of angiotensin I converting enzyme(P=0.005)in the seminoma *** altered expression levels of these proteins are associated with spermatogenesis dysfunction,reduced sperm kinematics and motility,failure in capacitation and *** findings of this study may explain the decrease in the fertilizing ability of men with seminoma before starting cancer therapy.

Science Letters:A novel way of liver preservation improves rat liver viability upon reperfusion

Background/aim:Currently, the liver is cold-preserved at 0～4 °C for experimental and clinical purposes. Here, we investigated whether milder hypothermia during the initial phase of the preservation period was beneficial for liver viability upon reperfusion. Methods:In the first set of experiments, rat livers were preserved either conventionally in clinically used histidine-trypthopan-ketoglutarate (HTK) solution (Group A:45 min and Group B:24 h) or by slow cooling HTK solution (from 13 °C to 3 °C) during the initial 45 min of preservation (Group C:24 h). In the second set of experiments, additional groups of livers were evaluated:Group BB—preservation according to Group B and Group CC—preservation according to Group C. Further, some livers were preserved at 13 °C for 24 h. Livers were then reperfused using a blood-free perfusion model. Results:Bile production was approximately 2-fold greater in Group C compared to Group B. Alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) release into perfusate were 2～3-fold higher in Group B compared to Group C. no significant differences were found in ALT and AST release between Group C and Group A. Livers in Group CC compared to Group BB exhibited significantly lower portal resistance, greater oxygen consumption and bromosulfophthalein excretion into bile and lower lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release into perfusate. Histological evaluation of tissue sections in Group BB showed parenchymal dystrophy of hepatocytes, while dystrophy of hepatocytes was absent in Group CC. Livers preserved at 13 °C for 24 h exhibited severe ischemic injury. Conclusion:These results suggest that the conventional way of liver preservation is not suitable at least for rat livers and that slow cooling of HTK solution during the initial phase of cold storage can improve liver viability during reperfusion.

This paper addresses the topic of the conceptual design of a regional aircraft with hybrid electric propulsion based on hydrogen fuel *** aims at providing an optimization-based method to design a hybrid propulsive system comprising two power sources(jet fuel and hydrogen)for the generation of the required propulsive power and at studying the impact of fuel cell technologies on the aircraft ***,by performing optimizations for two hybrid propulsive systems using either low temperature or high temperature proton-exchange membrane fuel cells,this study provides a preliminary assessment of the impact of the fuel cell operating temperature on the system design and the overall aircraft ***,this paper gives a description of the baseline turboprop regional aircraft with a focus on its high speed and low speed flight performances which will serve as requirements for the design of the hybrid ***,the hybrid electric architecture and the sizing models of the propulsion system are ***,optimizations are performed to design two parallel hybrid propulsive systems based on different fuel cells technologies and aimed at minimizing the block fuel per passenger over a mission of 200 n *** show how the proposed methodology and models lead to design two propulsive systems capable of reducing the fuel consumption per passenger by more than 30%compared to the baseline *** study also shows that the choice of fuel cell operating temperature has a first-order impact on the total mass.
