Leveraging crystal symmetry for thermoelectric performance optimization in cubic GeSe

In thermoelectrics,the manipulation of crystal symmetry is instrumental in optimizing the electrical and thermal transport *** this context,the present study explored the largely overlooked high-symmetry cubic GeSe,which presented larger band degeneracy than its widely studied medium-symmetry rhombohedral *** have successfully stabilized cubic Ge Se a ambient conditions through co-alloying with AgSnTe_(2)and *** incorporation of AgSnTe_(2)initiates the transition of GeSe from a low-symmetry orthorhombic to a mediumsymmetry rhombohedral phase,culminating in a highsymmetry cubic structure,underpinned by variation in chemical bonding *** this,the persistence of Ag_(2)Te precipitates impedes the total elimination of the residual orthorhombic phase due to the disparate chemical bonding mechanism between Ag_(2)Te and *** Bi into the rhombohedral-dominated(GeSe)_(0.7)(AgSnTe_(2))_(0.3)matrix leads to the dissolution of Ag_(2)Te precipitates,elimination of the residual orthorhombic phase,and the subsequent stabilization of the exclusive cubic *** to its orthorhombic counterpart,the cubic GeSe exhibits diminished bandgap and Ge vacancy formation energy,amplified band degeneracy,reduced sound velocity,intensified lattice anharmonicity and multiple phonon scattering centres engendering elevated carrier concentration and density-ofstates effective mass,alongside restrained lattice therma ***,a peak zT of 0.46 at 573 K is attained for cubic(Ge_(0.7)Bi_(0.3)Se)_(0.7)(AgSnTe_(2))_(0.3),signifying a ninefold increase relative to the initial orthorhombic Ge *** results illuminate the critical role of crystal symmetry manipulation in advancing the thermoelectric performance.

Defective TiO2 has attracted increasing attention for use in photocatalytic and electrochemical materials because of its narrowed band-gap and improved visible-light photocatalytic activity. However, a facile and efficient approach for obtaining defect-rich TiO2 still remains a challenge. herein, we demonstrate such an approach to narrow its bandgap and improve visible-light absorption through implanting abundant defects by aerodynamic levitated laser annealing （ALLA） treatment. Note that the ALLA method not only provides rapid annealing, solidifying and cooling process, but also exhibits high efficiency for homogeneous and defective TiO2 nanoparticles. The laser-annealed TiO2 achieves a high hydrogen evolution rate of 8.54 mmol.h-1.g-1, excellent decomposition properties within 60 min, and outstanding recyclability and stability, all of which are superior to the corresponding properties of commercial P25.

Design, synthesis and molecular docking studies of novel triazole antifungal compounds

Based on the active site of Candida albicans lanosterol 14α-demethylase (CACYP51), novel triazole compounds structurally different from the current triazole drugs were designed and synthesized. In vitro antifungal activities showed that compounds 10, 11, 16 and 20 exhibited strong activities. In addition, compounds 10, 11 and 16 also displayed certain activities against fluconazole-resistant fungi.

Activities of Biapenem against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Macrophages and Mice

Objective To assess the activities of biapenem against multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Methods Biapenem/clavulanate(BP/CL) was evaluated for in vitro activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis(Mtb) multidrug-resistant(MDR) isolates, extensively drug-resistant(XDR) isolates, and the H37 RV strain. BP/CL activity against the H37 Rv strain was assessed in liquid cultures, in macrophages, and in mice. Results BP/CL exhibited activity against MDR and XDR Mtb isolates in liquid cultures. BP/CL treatment significantly reduced the number of colony forming units(CFU) of Mtb within macrophages compared with control untreated infected macrophages. Notably, BP/CL synergized in pairwise combinations with protionamide, aminosalicylate, and capreomycin to achieve a fractional inhibitory concentration for each pairing of 0.375 in vitro. In a mouse tuberculosis infection model, the efficacy of a cocktail of levofloxacin + pyrazinamide + protionamide + aminosalicylate against Mtb increased when the cocktail was combined with BP/CL, achieving efficacy similar to that of the positive control treatment(isoniazid + rifampin + pyrazinamide) after 2 months of treatment. Conclusion BP/CL may provide a new option to clinically treat MDR tuberculosis.

Enhancing the regeneration of cartilage defects remains challenging owing to limited innate self-healing as well as acute inflammation arising from the overexpression of reactive oxygen species(ROS)in post-traumatic ***,stem cell-derived exosomes(Exos)have been developed as potential cell-free therapy for cartilage *** this approach promotes chondrogenesis,it neglects the emerging inflammatory *** this study,a smart bilayer-hydrogel dual-loaded with sodium diclofenac(DC),an anti-inflammatory drug,and Exos from bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells was developed to mitigate initial-stage inflammation and promote late-stage stem-cell recruitment and chondrogenic ***,the upper-hydrogel composed of phenylboronic-acid-crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol degrades in response to elevated levels of ROS to release DC,which mitigates oxidative stress,thus reprogramming macrophages to the pro-healing ***,Exos are slowly released from the lower-hydrogel composed of hyaluronic acid into an optimal microenvironment for the stimulation of *** in vitro and in vivo assays confirmed that the dual-loaded bilayer-hydrogel reduced post-traumatic inflammation and enhanced cartilage regeneration by effectively scavenging ROS and reprogramming *** proposed platform provides multi-staged therapy,which allows for the optimal harnessing of Exos as a therapeutic for cartilage regeneration.

Objective Nutrition is closely related to the health of the elderly population. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive picture of the nutrition status of elderly Chinese and its related dietary,geographical, and socioeconomic *** A total of 13,987 ≥ 60-year-old persons from the 2010–2013 Chinese National Nutrition and health Survey were included to evaluate various aspects of malnutrition, including underweight,overweight or obesity, and micronutrient *** Overall, the prevalence of obesity, overweight, and underweight was 12.4%, 34.8%, and 5.7%,respectively, with disparities both geographically and socioeconomically. The prevalence of underweight was higher among the older old(≥ 75 years), rural residents and those with low income, with low education status, and residing in undeveloped West areas. More than 75% of the elderly do not meet the Dietary Reference Intakes for vitamins A, B1, B2, and E, folate, calcium, selenium, potassium, biotin,and choline, with the prevalence of inadequate intake increasing with age for most nutrients. At the population level, the mean intakes of numerous food groups did not meet the recommendations by the Chinese Dietary *** Obesity epidemic, inadequacy of micronutrient intake, and high prevalence of underweight and anemia in susceptible older people are the major nutrition challenges for the rapidly aging population in China.

The inhibitory effects of NKX3.1 on IGF- 1R expression and its signalling pathway in human prostatic carcinoma PC3 cells

NKX3.1, which is a prostate-specific homeobox gene, plays an important role in prostate cancer and usually functions as a tumour suppressor gene. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of NKX3,1 on insulin-like growth factor （IGF）- 1R expression and its downstream signalling pathway in PC3 cells, PC3 cells were stably transfected with NKX3.1 expression plasmid （pcDNA3.1-NKX3.1） or vector plasmid （pcDNA3.1＋）. The IGF-IR mRNA and protein expression levels were assessed in PC3-NKX3.1 transfectants by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR） and Western blotting. The expression and activation of IGF-1/IGF-1R downstream signalling targets were examined by Western blotting and luciferase reporter assay. The cells were subsequently treated with relevant concentrations of IGF-1. The effect of IGF-1 on cell growth was examined by 3-（4,5）-dimethylthiahiazo（-z-yl）-3, 5-diphenytetrazoliumromide （MTT） assay and flow cytometry analysis. A significant suppression of IGF-1R mRNA and protein expression was observed after forced expression of NKX3.1 in PC3 cells. Correspondingly, the forced expression of NKX3.1 decreased IGF-l-induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 （ERK1/2） and protein kinase B （AKT） and activation of the Elk-1 transcription factor and downregulated the expression of the downstream target genes c-fos and cyclin D1. Furthermore, the forced expression of NKX3.1 inhibited IGF-l-induced cell growth. In conclusion, NKX3.1 could downregulate IGF-1R expression and could inhibit IGF-1R-mediated mitogen-activated protein kinase （MAPK）/ERK and AKT signalling pathways, which might partially leads to the inhibition of IGF-l-induced cell growth. This study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms that NKX3,1 exerts against prostate cancer and ultimately expands the scope of alternative approaches in advanced prostate cancer therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of Tiaobu Feishen formulae(TBFS) on cigarette smoke-induced inflammation in vitro using lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced and cigarette smoke extract(CSE)-induced NCI-H292 ***: We evaluated the inhibitory effects of Bufei Jianpi formula(BJF), Bufei Yishen formula(BYF), and Yiqi Zishen formula(YZF) on the expressions of inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α and interleukin(IL)-8, matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-9, tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloprotease(TIMP)-1, and superoxide dismutase(SOD) in H292 cells stimulated with LPS or CSE. Their related transcription factors and signaling pathways were also ***: BJF, BYF, and YZF significantly inhibited the LPS-or CSE-induced expressions of TNF-α, IL-8,MMP-9, TIMP-1, and SOD in H292 cells, and suppressed the activation of transcription factors including nuclear transcription factor(NF)-κB, activator protein(AP)-1, and signal transducers and activators of transcription(STAT) 3 and their corresponding pathways, including NF-κB, mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK), STAT3, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor(PPAR).CONCLUSION: BJF, BYF, and YZF effectively suppressed inflammatory responses, protease-antiprotease imbalance, and oxidative stress induced by LPS and CSE, an effect that was closely associated with the inhibition of the NF-κB, MAPK, STAT3, and PPAR pathways.
