streamflow prediction in ungauged catchments by using the Grunsky method

Establish a reliable rainfall-runoff relation capable of predicting runoff in ungauged basins is a matter of interest across the world for a long time and has been taking importance during the past *** approaches,hydrological models and machine learning techniques have been used to estimate ***,returning some simplicity to the predictions might be necessary for practical *** this paper,we re-introduce *** approach,developed in the early 1900s to predict runoff from values of precipitation on a two-equations ***,we analyze the Grunsky generalized method applied for 716 Brazilian catchments,on an interannual and monthly ***,we established the best method to find the rainfall-runoff relation coefficient for each ***,we evaluate the performance of the method on a local scale,i.e.,catchment by ***,we analyze the method of regionalization,by grouping the catchments into six hydrologically similar *** local scale,the Kling-Gupta Efficiency(KGE)values range from 0.87 to 0.93 on the interannual scale and is greater than 0.50 on the monthly *** the regionalized approach,KGE varies from 0.60 to 0.84 on an interannual *** also found suitable KGE values on a monthly scale,with more than 22%of catchments with KGE greater than 0.50,being the best performances in the Non-seasonal and Extremely-wet groups,and the worst performance in the Dry *** findings indicate that Grunsky approach is suitable to predict streamflow for Brazilian catchments on interannual and monthly *** simple and easy-to-use equation presents a reliable alternative to more complex methods to compute runoff by only using rainfall data.

Based on"user pays"and"provider gets"principles,the Payment for Environmental services(PEs)consists of providing economic incentives or compensation for land users who adopt activities that promote ecosystem *** PEs initiatives have grown rapidly in Brazil over the last few decades,however,studies that address the panorama of these programs in the country are still scarce,regional,or ***,we investigate the PEs overview in Brazil through interviews and an extensive literature *** found in total 80 PEs programs implemented in Brazil,of which 14 were *** pro-grams are poorly distributed across the country,mostly concentrated in the Atlantic Forest(56.25%)and savanna(36.25%)biomes,in southeastern *** majority of programs primarily prioritize improving water quality and ***,reforestation,protection of native vegetation,and soil and water conservation are their main proposed *** positive impacts of Brazil's PEs experi-ences are evident;while the lack of transparency and monitoring,and poor spatial and financial dis-tribution are still major *** conclude that if correctly implemented,PEs schemes offer a path to reconcile environmental conservation with agricultural production in Brazil.

Information about extreme rainfall is lacking in regions of south America and *** study attempts to fill this scientific gap by use of a gridded parameterization for the stochastic weather generator,CLIGEN,to map depth-duration-frequency(DDF)*** of 500-year point-scale precipitation time series generated at each grid point allowed maps of return period precipitation to be produced for a se-lection of sixteen durations ranging from 10-min to 1-year and for nine return periods from 2 to 500 *** generalized extreme value(GEV)probability distribution was fitted for all durations,and given GEV quantiles,an interpolation method was applied to produce maps at 0.1° resolution that better resolve small-scale spatial climate *** addition to uncertainties related to GEV fitting,this study quantifies prediction intervals based on ground *** validation was important for identifying biases in CLIGEN,although uncertainties were not always satisfactorily defined due to sampling design and other *** daily/multi-day durations,100 stations with daily observations and ≥50-year records were selected for validation against the 0.1° CLIGEN map series,resulting in a median and average absolute error of 13%and 16%,*** sub-daily durations,prediction errors were larger *** analogy using available *** established the degree of bias in CUGEN for sub-daily durations,and three records in Brazil with high temporal resolutions were used to confirm that applied bias adjustments resulted in error ranges similar to the daily/multi-day *** atlas is freely available for study of extreme precipitation.

surface runoff and soil erosion in a natural regeneration area of the Brazilian Cerrado

The Brazilian Cerrado has been converted to farmland,and there is little evidence that this expansion will decrease,mainly because agriculture is the country's main economic ***,the impacts of intense modification of land use and land cover on surface runoff and soil erosion are still poorly un-derstood in this ***,we assessed surface runoff and soil loss in a woodland Cerrado area under a former pasture area,which was abandoned and has undergone a natural regeneration process for 7 years(RC).Its results were compared with that found in an undisturbed area of woodland Cerrado(CE),40-month-old eucalyptus(3.0×1.8 m)(EU),and pasture under rotational grazing(PA).The study was conducted on Red Acrisol located in the Brazilian *** performed rainfall simulations on a plot of 0.7 m2 and using three constant rainfall intensities of 60,90,and 120 mm h-1 for 1 *** each rainfall intensity,we carried out four repetitions using different plots in each treatment,i.e.12 plots per treat-ment studied and 48 plots in *** noted that the soil physical properties were improved in RC and,consequently,water infiltration and soil erosion control;RC presented surface runoff and soil loss different from EU and PA(a=0.05).The macroporosity and soil bulk density affected surface runoff in RC and PA because the RC was used as pasture and is currently regenerating back to the cerrado *** the rainfall intensity increased,EU became more similar to PA,which showed the highest surface runoff and soil *** findings indicate that natural regeneration processes(pasture to the cerrado vegetation)tend to improve the soil ecosystem services,improving infiltration and reducing surface runoff and soil erosion.

CLIGEN is a stochastic weather generator that creates statistically representative timeseries of daily and sub-daily point-scale weather variables from observed monthly statistics and other parameters. CLIGEN precipitation timeseries are used as climate input for various risk-assessment modelling applications as an alternative to observe long-term, high temporal resolution records. Here, we queried gridded global climate datasets (TerraClimate, ERA5, GPM-IMERG, and GLDAs) to estimate various 20-year climate statistics and obtain complete CLIGEN input parameter sets with coverage of the African and south American continents at 0.25 arc degree resolution. The estimation of CLIGEN precipitation parameters was informed by a ground-based dataset of >10,000 locations worldwide. The ground observations provided target values to fit regression models that downscale CLIGEN precipitation input parameters. Aside from precipitation parameters, CLIGEN’s parameters for temperature, solar radiation, etc. were in most cases directly calculated according to the original global datasets. Cross-validation for estimated precipitation parameters quantified errors that resulted from applying the estimation approach in a predictive fashion. Based on all training data, the RMsE was 2.23 mm for the estimated monthly average single-event accumulation and 4.70 mm/hr for monthly maximum 30-min intensity. This dataset facilitates exploration of hydrological and soil erosional hypotheses across Africa and south America.

Air pollution has become a critical issue in urban areas,so a broad understanding of its spatiotemporal characteristics is important to develop public *** study analyzes the spatiotemporal variation of atmospheric particulate matter(PM_(10) and PM_(2.5))and ozone(O_(3))in Barranquilla,Colombia from March 2018 to June 2019 in three monitoring *** average concentrations observed for the Móvil,Policía,and Tres Avemarías stations,respectively,for PM_(10):46.4,51.4,and 39.7μg/m^(3);for PM_(2.5):16.1,18.1,and 15.1μg/m^(3) and for O_(3):35.0,26.6,and 33.6μg/m^(3).The results indicated spatial and temporal variations between the stations and the pollutants *** highest PM concentrations were observed in the southern part of the city,while for ozone,higher concentrations were observed in the *** variations are mainly associated with the influence of local sources in the environment of each site evaluated as well as the meteorological conditions and transport patterns of the study *** study also verified the existence of differences in the concentrations of the studied pollutants between the dry and rainy seasons and the contribution of local sources as biomass burnings from the Isla salamanca Natural Park and long-range transport of dust particles from the sahara *** study provides a scientific baseline for understanding air quality in the city,which enables policy makers to adopt efficient measures that jointly prevent and control pollution.

The treatment of wastewaters is crucial to maintain the ecological status of receiving waters,and thereby guarantee the protection of aquatic life and human *** quality evaluation is conventionally based on physicochemical parameters,but increasing attention has been paid to integrate physicochemical and biological ***,the regulatory use of fish in biological testing methods has been subject to various ethical and cost concerns,and in vitro cell-based assays have thus become an important topic of ***,the present study intends:(a) to evaluate the efficiency of two different sample pre-concentration techniques (lyophilisation and solid phase extraction) to assess the toxicity of municipal effluents on rat cardiomyoblast H9c2(2-1) cells,and (b) maximizing the use of the effluent sample collected,to estimate the environmental condition of the receiving *** gathered results demonstrate that the H9c2(2-1) sulforhodamine B-based assay is an appropriate in vitro method to assess biological effluent toxicity,and the best results were attained by lyophilising the sample as *** to its response,the H9c2(2-1) cell line might be a possible alternative in vitro model for fish lethal testing to assess the toxicity of municipal *** physicochemical status of the sample suggests a high potential for eutrophication,and iron exceeded the permissible level for wastewater discharge,possibly due to the addition of ferric chloride for wastewater *** general,the levels of carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole are higher than those reported for other countries,and both surpassed the aquatic protective values for long-term exposure.

Communicating with the non-dominant hemisphere:Implications for neurological rehabilitation

Aphasic syndromes usually result from injuries to the dominant hemisphere of the brain. Despite the fact that localization of language functions shows little interindividual variability, several brain areas are simultaneously activated when language tasks are undertaken. Mechanisms of language recovery after brain injury to the dominant hemisphere seem to be relatively stereotyped, including activations of perilesional areas in the acute phase and of homologues of language areas in the non-dominant hemisphere in the subacute phase, later returning to dominant hemisphere activation in the chronic phase. Plasticity mechanisms reopen the critical period of language development, more specifically in what leads to disinhibition of the non-dominant hemisphere when brain lesions affect the dominant hemisphere. The non-dominant hemisphere plays an important role during recovery from aphasia, but currently available rehabilitation therapies have shown limited results for efficient language improvement. Large-scale randomized controlled trials that evaluate well-defined interventions in patients with aphasia are needed for stimulation of neuroplasticity mechanisms that enhance the role of the non-dominant hemisphere for language recovery. Ineffective treatment approaches should be replaced by more promising ones and the latter should be evaluated for proper application. The data generated by such studies could substantiate evidence-based rehabilitation strategies for patients with aphasia.

Black carbon(BC)is one of the short-lived air pollutants that contributes significantly to aerosol radiative forcing and global climate *** is emitted by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels,biofuels,and *** environments are quite complex and thus,the use of mobile jointly with fixed monitoring provides a better understanding of the dynamics of BC distribution in such *** present study addresses the measurement of BC concentration using real-time mobile and ambient monitoring in Barranquilla,an industrialized urban area of the Colombian Caribbean.A microaethalometer(MA200)and an aethalometer(AE33)were used for measuring the BC *** absorption Ångström exponent(AAE)values were determined for the study area,for identifying the BC emission *** results of the ambient sampling show that vehicle traffic emissions prevail;however,the influence of biomass burning was also *** mean ambient BC concentration was found to be 1.04±1.03μg/m^(3) and varied between 0.5 and 4.0μg/m^(3).From the mobile measurements obtained in real traffic conditions on the road,a much higher average value of 16.1±16.5μg/m^(3) was *** parts of the city showed BC concentrations higher than 20μg/m^(3).The spatial distribution of BC concentration shows that vehicle emissions and traffic jams,a consequence of road and transport infrastructure,are the factors that most affect the BC concentration.A comparison of results obtained from two aethalometers indicates that the concentrations measured by MA200 are 9%lower than those measured by *** AAE obtained was found to vary between 1.1 and 1.6,indicating vehicular emissions as the most crucial *** addition,it was observed that the BC concentration on working days was 2.5 times higher than on the weekends in the case of mobile monitoring and 1.5 times higher in the case of ambient monitoring.
