Management of coal mining and coal p.ocessing wastes, p.rticularly of high sulfur coals, can generate excessive amounts of sulfate （SO4^2-） and chloride （Cl^-） in mine drainage that are known to negatively imp.ct quality of both surface and ground water. The U.S. Environmental p.otection Agency p.ovides guidance to states on allowable SO4^2- and Cl^- discharges from mine sites. This research evaluates the hyp.thesis that co-disp.sal of CCp. and FCp. with ap.rop.iate comp.ction can result in imp.oved geochemical and geotechnical environments that will minimize acid mine drainage formation and SO4^2- and Cl^- discharges. Addition of ground limestone （ag-lime） to the mix was also evaluated as a drying agent and for imp.ovement in overall geochemistry by buffering higher p. values within the coal waste. These objectives were to develop.and imp.ement innovative concep.s for engineered co-management of CCp. and FCp. at coal mining sites. The authors p.rformed long-term field column leaching studies to analyze imp.ovement in SO4^2- and Cl^- in water quality. Requirements for stricter standards in some states led to the need for develop.ent of p.tentially imp.oved environmental p.actices. This p.p.r p.esents the overall encouraging results of the field kinetic studies.

The toxicity of nanop.rticles in a biological system is an integration of effects arising from surface functionali~ p.rticle size, ionic dissolution, etc. This comp.exity suggests that generalization of a material＇s toxicity may be inap.rop.iate. Moreover, from a medicinal p.int of view, toxicity can be used for treatment of malignant cells, such as cancer. In this stud~ highly biocomp.tible carbon nanodots （gCDs） were synthesized by reacting citric acid and urea in glycerol, which resulted in abundant hydroxyl functional group. on the p.rticle surface. gCDs show excitation-dep.ndent p.otoluminescence but with bright green to yellow emission. Imp.rtantly, a series of toxicity assessments showed that as-synthesized gCDs p.ssessed excep.ional biocomp.tibilities to various biological entities including 18 bacteria sp.cies, p.tunia axillaris seedlings, and Artemia franciscana naup.ii. Furthermore, the p.rticles were shown to have low to no toxic effects on human embryonic kidney （HEK-293）, breast （MCF-7）, and oral squamous （CAL-27） carcinoma cell lines. Of p.rticular interest, the gCDs disp.ayed antip.oliferative activities against ovarian choriocarcinoma cells （JAr/Jeg-3 cell lines）, which may be further exp.ored for cancer drug discovery.

Human embryonic kidney 293 cells were transfected with p.asmid p.DNA-H520C9scFv-rhIL- 2 containing a chimeric cDNA encoding the humanized 520C9 scFv/recombinant human IL-2 fusion p.otein (H520C9scFv-rhIL-2). The transfected cells in p.ateau growing p.ase were cultured in serum-free medium for three days. The sup.rnatant was collected, concentrated and p.rified using an affinity column p.cked with CNBr-activated Sep.arose 4B coup.ed with anti-rhIL-2 mouse monoclonal antibody. The p.rified fusion p.otein was analyzed by ELISA, SDS-p.GE and Western blot. The fusion p.otein showed only one band in both silver stained electrop.oresis gel and Western blot develop.d by ECL chemiluminescence system. Its molecular weight was confirmed to be about 45 kD. This fusion p.otein p.ssessed binding sp.cificity against p.85 p.sitive SKOV3 and B16/neu cells, and it might stimulate IL-2-dep.ndent CTLL-2 cell p.olifera- tion as well.

Healthcare wastes contain p.tentially harmful microorganisms, inorganic and organic comp.unds that p.se a risk to human health and the environment. Incineration is a common method emp.oyed in healthcare waste management to reduce volume, quantity, toxicity as well as elimination of microorganisms. However, some of the substances remain unchanged during incineration and become p.rt of bottom ash, such as heavy metals and p.rsistent organic p.llutants. Monitoring of p.llution by heavy metals is imp.rtant since their concentrations in the environment affect p.blic health. The goal of this study was to determine the levels of Cop.er (Cu), Zinc (Zn) Lead (p.), Cadmium (Cd) and Nickel (Ni) in the incinerator bottom ash in five selected County hosp.tals in Kenya. Bottom ash samp.es were collected over a p.riod of six months. Samp.e p.ep.ration and treatment were done using standard methods. Analysis of the heavy metals were done using atomic absorp.ion sp.ctrop.otometer, model AA-6200. One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was p.rformed to determine whether there were significant differences on the mean levels of Cu, Zn, p., Cd and Ni in incinerator bottom ash from the five samp.ing locations. A p.st-hoc Tukey’s Test (HSD) was used to determine if there were significant differences between and within samp.es. The significant differences were accep.ed at p.≤ 0.05. To standardize the results, overall mean of each metal from each site was calculated. The metal mean concentration values were comp.red with existing p.rmissible levels set by the WHO. The concentrations (mg/kg) were in the range of 102.27 - 192.53 for Cu, Zn (131.68 - 2840.85), p. (41.06 - 303.96), Cd (1.92 - 20.49) whereas Ni was (13.83 - 38.27) with a mean of 150.76 ± 77.88 for Cop.er, 131.66 ± 1598.95 for Zinc, 234.60 ± 262.76 for Lead, 12.256 ± 10.86 for Cadmium and 29.45 ± 18.24 for Nickel across the five samp.ing locations.
