The *** of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service(USDAARS)maintains seven in situ soil moisture networks throughout the continental United States,some since *** networks are crucial for understanding the spatial and temporal extent of droughts in their historical context,parameterization of hydrologic models,and local agricultural decision ***,the estimates from these networks are dependent upon their ability to provide reliable soil moisture information at a large *** is also not known how many network stations are sufficient to monitor watershed scale ***,the objectives of this research were to:(1)determine how temporally stable these networks are,including the relationships between various sensors on a year-to-year and seasonal basis,and(2)attempt to determine how many sensors are required,within a network,to approximate the full network *** data from seven in situ,it is concluded that approximately 12 soil moisture sensors are sufficient in most environments,presuming their locations are distributed to capture the hydrologic heterogeneity of the *** is possible to install a temporary network containing a suitable number of sensors for an appropriate length of time,glean stable relationships between locations,and retain these insights moving forward with fewer sensor resources.

This paper describes an experimental investigation on the flow characteristics within a rotating cylinder containing a rolling bed of sand. The axis of the cylinder was horizontal and there was no axial bulk flow of particles. The velocity field of the gas flowing through the cylinder was measured by hot-wire anemometry. The measurements indicate that the velocity field is asymmetric with respect to a diameter perpendicular to the granular bed. CFD calculations confirm this finding. The gas velocity profiles are crucial in determining heat transfer from gas to solid.

Multiple sclerosis （MS） is a chronic, inflammatory and neu- rodegenerative disease of the central nervous system （CNS） affecting at least 2.5 million people worldwide. Background:Sulfur mustard(SM)is a chemical warfare vesicant that severely injures exposed eyes,lungs,and *** hydrochloride(NM)is widely used as an SM *** study aimed to develop a depilatory double-disc(DDD)NM skin burn model for investigating vesicant pharmacotherapy ***:Hair removal method(clipping only versus clipping followed by a depilatory),the effect of acetone in the vesicant administration vehicle,NM dose(0.5-20μmol),vehicle volume(5-20μl),and time course(0.5-21 days)were investigated using male and female CD-1 ***,an indicator of burn response,was assessed by biopsy skin *** ideal NM dose to induce partial-thickness burns was assessed by edema and histopathologic *** optimized DDD model was validated using an established reagent,NDH-4338,a cyclooxygenase,inducible nitric oxide synthase,and acetylcholinesterase inhibitor ***:Clipping/depilatory resulted in a 5-fold higher skin edematous response and was highly reproducible(18-fold lower%CV)compared to clipping *** did not affect edema *** edema occurred 24-48 h after NM administra-tion using optimized dosing methods and *** partial-thickness burns were achieved with 5μmol of NM and responded to treatment with *** dif-ferences in burn edematous responses were observed between males and ***:A highly reproducible and sensitive partial-thickness skin burn model was developed for assessing vesicant pharmacotherapy *** model pro-vides clinically relevant wound severity and eliminates the need for organic solvents that induce changes to the skin barrier function.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a common cause of cancer-related death,with incidence increasing ***,the overall prognosis for patients with HCC is poor and many patients present with advanced stages of disease that preclude curative *** and interventional radiologists play a key role in the management of patients with *** radiologists can use contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CT),magnetic resonance imaging,and ultrasound to diagnose and stage HCC,without the need for pathologic confirmation,by following established *** staged,the interventional radiologist can treat the appropriate patients with percutaneous ablation,transarterial chemoem-bolization,or ***-up imaging after these liver-directed therapies for HCC can be characterized according to various radiologic response criteria;although,enhancement-based criteria,such as European Association for the Study of the Liver and modified Response Evaluation Criter in Solid Tumors,are more reflective of treatment effect in *** imaging technologies like volumetric analysis,dual-energy CT,cone beam CT and perfusion CT may provide additional benefits for patients with HCC.

The demographic trend of a species depends on the dynamics of its local populations,which can be compromised by local or by global ***,the relevance of local and global phenomena has rarely been investigated ***,we tested whether local phenomena compromised a species'demographic trend using the Eurasian common lizard Zootoca vivipara,the terrestrial reptile exhibiting the widest geographic distribution,as a model *** analyzed the species'ancient demographic trend using genetic data from its 6 allopatric genetic clades and tested whether its demographic trend mainly depended on single clades or on global *** vivipara's effective population size increased since 2.3 million years ago and started to increase steeply and continuously from 0.531 million years *** growth rate exhibited 2 maxima,both occurring during global climatic changes and important vegetation changes on the northern *** population size and growth rate were negatively correlated with global surface temperatures,in line with global parameters driving long-term demographic *** vivipara's ancient demography was neither driven by a single clade,nor by the 2 clades that colonized huge geographic areas after the last *** low importance of local phenomena,suggests that the experimentally demonstrated high sensitivity of this species to short-term ecological changes is a response in order to cope with short-term and local *** suggests that what affected its long-term demographic trend the most,were not these local changes/responses,but rather the important and prolonged global climatic changes and important vegetation changes on the northern hemisphere,including the opening up of the forest by humans.
