Is increased water consumption among older adults associated with improvements in glucose homeostasis?

Obesity and impaired glucose homeostasis in older adults place these individuals at risk for diabetes. dehydration, glucose homeostasis, and insulin resistance are related;while aging and dehydration are associated with decreased glucose tolerance, weight loss can improve glycemia. For older adults following hypocaloric diets, additional water consumption may lead to greater weight loss. Further more, research suggests an association between insulin resistance and the body water retention hormone, arginine vasopressin (AVP). Analysis of the association between plasma copeptin (an AVP derivative) and fasting glucose, insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) may provide further insight into the relationship between dehydration and diabetes risk. Our objective was to investigate the possibility that increased water consumption among older adults (n = 29, BMI = 31 ± 1 kg/m2, age = 62 ± 1 years) could improve glucose homeostasis beyond that observed with weight loss, as well as associations between plasma copeptin and diabetes risk. This retrospective analysis utilized data from a previous investigation, in which obese/overweight older adults were assigned to one of two groups: 1) Water: consume 500 ml of water prior to three daily meals over a 12-week hypocaloric diet intervention, or 2) Non-water: hypocaloric diet alone. In the present analysis, fasting plasma glucose and insulin, HOMA-IR, and plasma copeptin were evaluated, and compared to urinary specific gravity (USG), drinking water consumption, and body weight. Analyses performed using group assignment, volume of drinking water consumed or among a subgroup pair-matched for weight loss and sex did not reveal significant differences between groups. Regulation of d-galacturonate metabolism in <i>Caulobacter crescentus</i>by HumR, a LacI-family transcriptional repressor

The oligotrophic freshwater bacterium Caulobacter crescentus encodes a cluster of genes (CC_1487 to CC_1495) shown here to be necessary for metabolism of d-galacturonate, the primary constituent of pectin, a major plant polymer. Sequence analysis suggests that these genes encode a version of the bacterial hexuronate isomerase pathway. A conserved 14 bp sequence motif is associated with promoter regions of three operons within this cluster, and is conserved in homologous gene clusters in related alpha-Proteobacteria. Embedded in the hexuronate gene cluster is a gene (CC_1489) encoding a member of the LacI family of bacterial transcription factors. This gene product, designated here as HumR (hexuronate metabolism regulator), represses expression of the uxaA and uxaC operon promoters by binding to the conserved operator sequence. Repression is relieved in the presence of galacturonate or, to a lesser extent, by glucuronate. Other genes potentially involved in pectin degradation and hexuronate transport are also under the control of HumR. Adoption of a LacI-type repressor to control hexuronate metabolism parallels the regulation of xylose, glucose, and maltose utilization in C. crescentus, but is distinct from the use of GntR-type repressors to control pectin and hexuronate utilization in gamma-Proteobacteria such as Escherichia coli.

A superior homonymous quadrantanopia is a well recognized complication of anterior temporal lobe resection and occurs because of disruption of the Meyer loop, the anterior part of the optic radiation. The authors used diffusion tensor imaging tractography to visualize the optic radiation before and after surgery, demonstrating the disruption of Meyer loop in a patient who developed a quadrantanopia. Preoperative imaging of the optic radiation will be useful in predicting visual field defects following temporal lobe resection.

Evaluation of Cellulose as a Substrate for Hydrocarbon Fuel Production by <i>Ascocoryne sarcoides</i>(NRRL 50072)

The fungal endophyte, Ascocoryne sarcoides, produced aviation, gasoline and diesel-relevant hydrocarbons when grown on multiple substrates including cellulose as the sole carbon source. Substrate, growth stage, culturing pH, temperature and medium composition were statistically significant factors for the type and quantity of hydrocarbons produced. Gasoline range (C5-C12), aviation range (C8-C16) and diesel range (C9-C36) organics were detected in all cultured media. Numerous non-oxygenated hydrocarbons were produced such as isopentane, 3,3-dimethyl hexane and d-limonene during exponential growth phase. Growth on cellulose at 23°C and pH 5.8 produced the highest overall yield of fuel range organics (105 mg * g·biomass-1). A change in metabolism was seen in late stationary phase from catabolism of cellulose to potential oxidation of hydrocarbons resulting in the production of more oxygenated compounds with longer carbon chain length and fewer fuel-related compounds. The results outline rational strategies for controlling the composition of the fuel-like compounds by changing culturing parameters.

Background:To evaluate the efficacy of manual mid-stromal dissection in stabilizing progressive ***:Surgeries were performed in 16 eyes of 14 patients with progressive *** eyes were examined before and at 1 day,1 week,1,3,6 and 12 months after surgery,and every 6 months ***(simK,Kmax and pachymetry),best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)and subjective refraction were recorded up to the latest follow-up visit(mean follow-up time 6.6±2.4 years).Results:All surgeries were uneventful,and no postoperative complications *** values(n=15)stabilized in 6/11 eyes(55%)with a preoperative Kmaxdiopter(d),while all eyes>60 d showed continued *** 11/15 eyes(73%)pachymetry was *** with spectacles remained stable in 7/12 eyes(58%)and improved≥2 Snellen lines in 5/12 eyes(42%).BCVA with a contact lens remained stable in 4/9 eyes(44%),improved≥2 Snellen lines in 3/9 eyes(33%)and deteriorated in 2/9 eyes(22%).Conclusions:Manual mid-stromal dissection was effective in 50%of keratoconic corneas with Kmax valuesd and may be considered in cases ineligible for other interventions such as UV-crosslinking,stromal ring implantation or Bowman layer *** advantage of the procedure may be that the tissue is unaltered and that no synthetic or biological implant is required.

浅源地震是山区地壳抬升的主要驱动力（Avouac，2008）。然而，浅源大地震也触发大范围的同震滑坡，造成显著、但在空间上不均匀的侵蚀（Keefer，1994；Malamud et al，2004；Larsen et al，2010）。因此地壳抬升与同震滑坡的分布及规模间的相互作用就引发了一个根本的问题，即大地震及其相关的滑坡是创生还是消毁了山区地形。2008年中国四川Mw7．9汶川地震触发了超过56000处滑坡（dai et al，2011），其空间分布仅仅部分与构造变形样式有关（Shen et al，2009）。通过将滑坡面积一体积标度关系（Larsen et al，2010；Guzzetti et al，2009）应用于高分辨率卫星影像，我们仔细检查了造山方量的潜在变化。我们估计，同震滑坡产生了约5～15km^3的可侵蚀物质，大于2．6±1．2km^3（deMichele et al，2010）的同震地壳抬升净方量。这种差异表明，在可能的2000-4000年的地震复发周期中（Shen et al，2009），即使只有小部分滑坡物质从造山带中运移走，汶川地震也会在龙门山导致物质净亏损。我们的结果对长期以来广泛持有的大倾滑或走滑地震能造山的观点提出了挑战，并希望引起对同震滑移、滑坡量与地形生成之间的关系更多的思考研究。
