We introduce in the many-body GW scheme the modulation of the screened Coulomb interaction W arising from the macroscopic dielectric response in the *** derive expressions for the polaron binding energies,the renormalization of the effective masses and for the electron and hole relaxation *** and hole mobilities are then obtained from the incorporation of appropriate scattering ***-blende GaN and orthorhombic MAPbI3 are used as test beds finding fair agreement with results from rigorous electron-phonon coupling *** limited to polar phonons,our method has a negligible computational cost.

This paper presents an approach for the optimal design of a new retrofit technique called weakening and damping that is valid for civil engineering inelastic structures. An alternative design methodology is developed with respect to the existing ones that is able to determine the locations and the magnitude of weakening and/or softening of structural elements and adding damping while insuring structural stability. An optimal polynomial controller that is a summation of polynomials in nonlinear states is used in Phase I of the method to reduce the peak response quantities of seismically excited nonlinear or hysteretic systems. The main advantage of the optimal polynomial controller is that it is able to automatically stabilize the structural system. The optimal design of a shear-type structure is used as an example to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach, which leads to a reduction of both peak inter-story drifts and peak total accelerations.

New particle formation(NPF) in the tropical free troposphere(FT) is a globally important source of cloud condensation nuclei, affecting cloud properties and climate. Oxidized organic molecules(OOMs)produced from biogenic volatile organic compounds are believed to contribute to aerosol formation in the tropical FT, but without direct chemical observations. We performed in situ molecular-level OOMs measurements at the Bolivian station Chacaltaya at 5240 m above sea level, on the western edge of Amazonia. For the first time, we demonstrate the presence of OOMs, mainly with 4–5 carbon atoms, in both gas-phase and particle-phase(in terms of mass contribution) measurements in tropical FT air from Amazonia. These observations, combined with air mass history analyses, indicate that the observed OOMs are linked to isoprene emitted from the rainforests hundreds of kilometers away. Based on particle-phase measurements, we find that these compounds can contribute to NPF, at least the growth of newly formed nanoparticles, in the tropical FT on a continental scale. Thus, our study is a fundamental and significant step in understanding the aerosol formation process in the tropical FT.

Background:Hemodialysis(Hd) per se is a risk factor for *** the growing body of evidence on blood-flow restriction(BFR) exercise in Hd patients,identification of possible risk factors related to the prothrombotic agent d-dimer is required for the safety and feasibility of this training *** aim of the present study was to identify risk factors associated with higher d-dimer levels and to determine the acute effect of resistance exercise(RE) with BFR on this ***:Two hundred and six Hd patients volunteered for this study(all with a glomerular filtration rate of d of 50% arterial occlusion pressure during 50 min sessions of Hd(intradialytic exercise).RE repetitions included concentric and eccentric lifting phases(each lasting 2 s) and were supervised by a strength and conditioning ***:Several variables were associated with elevated levels of d-dimer,including higher blood glucose,citrate use,recent cardiovascular events,recent intercurrents,higher inflammatory status,catheter as vascular access,older patients(>70 years old),and Hd ***,RE+BFR significantly increases d-dimer after 4 *** with borderline baseline d-dimer levels(400-490 ng/mL) displayed increased risk of elevating d-dimer over the normal range(≥500 ng/mL).Conclusion:These results identified factors associated with a heightened prothrombotic state and may assist in the screening process for Hd patients who wish to undergo RE+BFR.d-dimer and/or other fibrinolysis factors should be assessed at baseline and throughout the protocol as a precautionary measure to maximize safety during RE+BFR.

Significant advances in surgical techniques and relevant medium-and long-term outcomes over the past two decades have led to a substantial expansion in the indications for major liver *** support these outstanding results and to reduce perioperative complications,anesthesiologists must address and master key perioperative issues(preoperative assessment,proactive intraoperative anesthesia strategies,and implementation of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery approach).Intensive care unit monitoring immediately following liver surgery remains a subject of active and often unresolved *** postoperative complications,posthepatectomy liver failure(PHLF)occurs in different grades of severity(A-C)and frequency(9%-30%),and it is the main cause of 90-d postoperative ***,recently redefined with pragmatic clinical criteria and perioperative scores,can be predicted,prevented,or *** review highlights:(1)The systemic consequences of surgical manipulations anesthesiologistsmust respond to or prevent,to positively impact PHLF(a proactive approach);and(2)the maximal intensivetreatment of PHLF,including artificial options,mainly based,so far,on Acute Liver Failure treatment(s),to buytime waiting for the recovery of the native liver or,when appropriate and in very selected cases,toward *** a clinical context requires a strong commitment to surgeons,anesthesiologists,and intensivists towork together,for a fruitful collaboration in a mandatory clinical continuum.

The degradation of agricultural terraces is considered a major challenge to soil and water conservation in steep-slope *** terracing is a widespread conservation practice,its sustainability is threatened by adverse climatic and man-made *** studies have shown the impact of terrace designs on the formation of runoff pathways,causing degradation processes on terrace platforms(*** erosion)and walls(***,landslides,collapse).This study evaluates a remote sensing versus a field-based approach to monitor hydrological processes responsible for terrace degradation,as tested in a north-Italian *** field-based approach was based on spatially measured Soil Moisture Content(SMC)using a Time domain Reflectometry(TdR)instrument,which clearly revealed saturation hotspots around two damaged terraces in the study ***,these zones showed a particular cross-sectional SMC profile,with the highest saturation close to the terrace platform *** remote sensing approach was based on aerial imagery acquired by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)and photogrammetric reconstruction of the vineyard geomorphology,allowing terrain-based analysis and physical erosion *** this approach,simulations indicated that terrace damages could be partly explained by the formation of preferential runoff pathways caused by the terrace *** parallel methodology allowed a comparison of the merits and limitations of either approach,as done in light of published *** occurrence of two SMC hotspots at terrace edges(and their non-typical cross-sectional profiles)could be better understood from simulated surface flow *** the causal relationship between heterogeneous soil saturation and terrace instability has been previously reported in literature,the novelty of the presented study is the use of topsoil SMC as an indicator of potential damages,favouring the scalability compared to fixed,local and often intrusive terrace sub-sur

Palladium based catalysts are the most active for methane oxidation. The tuning of their composition, structure and morphology at macro and nanoscale can alter significantly their catalytic behavior and robustness with a strong impact on their overall performances. Among the several combinations of supports and promoters that have been utilized, Pd/CeO2 has attracted a great attention due to its activity and durability coupled with the unusually high degree of interaction between Pd/Pd O and the support. This allows the creation of specific structural arrangements which profoundly impact on methane activation characteristics. Here we want to review the latest findings in this area, and particularly to envisage how the control(when possible) of Pd-CeO2 interaction at nanoscale can help in designing more robust methane oxidation catalysts.

Chromosomal evolution is widely considered an important driver of speciation because it can promote the establishment of reproductive *** reorganization is also expected to affect the mea n phe no type,as well as its developme nt and patter ns of phenotypic in tegrati on,through processes such as variation in genetic linkage between quantitative trait loci or between regulatory regions and their *** we explore the relationship between chromosomal evolution and phenotypic integration by analyzing a well-known house mouse parapatric contact zone between a highly derived Robertsonian(Rb)race(2n=22)and populations with standard karyotype(2n=40).Populations with hybrid karyotypes are scattered throughout the hybrid zone connecting the two parental *** mandible shape data and geometric morphometries,we test the hypothesis that patter ns of in tegration progressively diverge from the"normal"integration pattern observed in the standard race as they accumulate Rb *** find that the main pattern of integration observed between the posterior and anterior part of the mandible can be largely attributed to *** find no support for a gradual increase in divergence from normal patterns of integration as fusions ***,however,we find that the derived Rb race(2n=22)has a distinct allometric trajectory compared with the standard *** results suggest that either individual fusions disproportionately affect patterns of integration or that there are mechanisms which"purge"extreme variants in hybrids(*** fitness of hybrid shape).

Pressure-swirl atomizers are often employed to generate a water-mist spray,typically employed in fire *** the present study,an experimental characterization of dispersion(velocity and cone angle)and atomization(drop-size axial evolution)was carried out following a previously developed methodology,with specific reference to the initial region of the ***-based techniques were used to quantitatively evaluate the considered phenomena:velocity field was reconstructed through a Particle Image Velocimetry analysis;drop-size distribution was measured by a Malvern Spraytec device,highlighting secondary atomization and subsequent coalescence along the spray ***,a comprehensive set of relations was validated as predictive of the involved parameters,following an inviscid-fluid *** proposed model pertains to early studies on pressure-swirl atomizers and primarily yields to determine both initial velocity and cone *** spray thickness is also predicted and a classic correlation for Sauter Mean diameter is shown to provide good agreement with experimental *** analysis was carried out at the operative pressure of 80 bar;two injectors were employed featuring different orifice diameters and flow numbers,as a sort of parametric approach to this spray typology.
