Fragile to strong crossover and Widom line in supercooled water： A comparative study

The aim of this paper is to discuss the relationship between the dynamics and thermodynamics of water in the supercooled region. Reviewed case studies comprehend bulk water simulated with the SPC/E, TIP4P and TIP4P/2005 potentials, water at protein interfaces, and water in solution with electrolytes. Upon supercooling, the fragile to strong crossover in the s-relaxation of water is found to occur when the Widom line emanating from the liquid-liquid critical point is crossed. This appears to be a general characteristic of supercooled water, not depending on the applied interaction potential and/or different local environments.

Agencies in charge of flood management use disaster reports(DRs)as the preferred source of information on past flooding events.A systematic survey of DRs prepared by Italian agencies suggests that DRs could be widely enhanced in view of targeting more effective communication to citizens,reinforcing the communication pillar in civil protection planning and management,and improving the resilience of the population to extreme *** loss of the rigor and details required for all the usual technical uses of DRs,we suggest recompiling them in the form of"disaster tales"(DTs),as tools that offer wider knowledge of the events to improve people’s preparedness and self-protection *** major flooding events have demonstrated the communication potential that videos and pictures taken by citizens have for risk perception and disaster *** watching and listening to what has happened the communication recipient can better understand the feelings of the people experiencing an *** structure of the improved reports,we suggest,will finally integrate data,graphs,and maps with interactive tools and be able to present handier multimedia views of the *** to three case studies of flooding in Italy illustrates how to concretely implement the suggested disaster reports to create more readily accessible disaster tales.

AIM： To provide the accurate alternative metrical means of monitoring the effects of new antiviral drugs on the reversal of newly formed collagen. METHODS： digitized histological biopsy sections taken from 209 patients with chronic C virus hepatitis with different grade of fibrosis or cirrhosis, were measured by means of a new, rapid, user-friendly, fully computeraided method based on the international system meter rectified using fractal principles. RESULTS： The following were described： geometric perimeter, area and wrinkledness of fibrosis; the collation of the Knodell, Sheuer, Ishak and METAVIR scores with fractal-rectified metric measurements; the meaning of the physical composition of fibrosis in relation to the magnitude of collagen islets; the intra- and inter-biopsy sample variability of these parameters; the ＂staging＂ of biopsy sections indicating the pathway covered by fibrosis formation towards its maximum known value; the quantitative liver tissue architectural changes with the Hurst exponent. CONCLUSION： Our model provides the first metrical evaluations of the geometric properties of fibrosis and the quantitative architectural changes of the liver tissue. The representativeness of histological sections of the whole liver is also discussed in the light of the results obtained with the Hurst coefficient.

Background Vitamin D(25-OHD)has a role in bone health after treatment for cancer.25-OHD deficiency has been associated with risk factors for cardiovascular disease,but no data focusing on this topic in childhood cancer survivors have been *** investigated the 25-OHD status in children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL),and evaluated its influence on vascular *** 25-OHD levels were evaluated in 52 ALL survivors and 40 matched healthy *** were grouped according to 25-OHD level(dimers,Fbg,and hs-CRP),ultrasound markers of vascular endothelial function(flow-mediated dilatation,FMD,common carotid intima-media thickness,C-IMT,and antero-posterior diameter of infra-renal abdominal aorta,APAO)were evaluated in the *** Cases showed higher prevalence of 25-OHD deficiency than controls(p=0.002).In univariate analysis via mean comparisons,25-OHD deficient(differences were also found for ET-1(P=0.035)and AD-HMW(P=0.015).In the multiple regression models controlling for some confounders,25-OHD still was associated with C-IMT(P=0.0163),ET-1(P=0.0077),and AD-HMW(P=0.0008).Conclusions Childhood ALL survivors show higher prevalence of 25-OHD deficiency as compared to *** 25-OHD levels appear to be linked to indicators of endothelial and vascular *** monitoring of 25-OHD balance may help to prevent cardiovascular diseases in childhood ALL survivors,characterized by high cardiovascular risk.

Effective prevention and management of osteoporosis would require suitable methods for population screenings and early diagnosis. Current clinicallyavailable diagnostic methods are mainly based on the use of either X-rays or ultrasound(US). All X-ray based methods provide a measure of bone mineral density(BMD), but it has been demonstrated that other structural aspects of the bone are important in determining fracture risk, such as mechanical features and elastic properties, which cannot be assessed using densitometric techniques. Among the most commonly used techniques, dual X-ray absorptiometry(DXA) is considered the current 'gold standard' for osteoporosis diagnosis and fracture risk prediction. Unfortunately, as other X-ray based techniques, DXA has specific limitations(e.g., use of ionizing radiation, large size of the equipment, high costs, limited availability) that hinder its application for population screenings and primary care diagnosis. This has resulted in an increasing interest in developing reliable pre-screening tools for osteoporosis such as quantitative ultrasound(QUS) scanners, which do not involve ionizing radiation exposure and represent a cheaper solution exploiting portable and widely available devices. Furthermore, the usefulness of QUS techniques in fracture risk prediction has been proven and, with the last developments, they are also becoming a more and more reliable approach for assessing bone quality. However, the US assessment of osteoporosis is currently used only as a pre-screening tool, requiring a subsequent diagnosis confirmation by means of a DXA evaluation. Here we illustrate the state of art in the early diagnosis of this 'silent disease' and show up recent advances for its prevention and improved management through early diagnosis.
