The photoreceptor layer of the human retina has several characteristics that are unique. Their energy requirements are the highest in the organism;in proportion, rods and cones require 10-fold the energy consumed by the cerebral cortex, 6-fold more than the cardiac muscle, and 3-fold more than the renal cortex. Astonishingly, the photoreceptor layer has no blood vessels at all. so, where is the energy to this tissue coming from? In this article we’ll describe the hitherto unknown explanation.

Mitochondrial disease has important implications for numerous functions that affect different cells lines and tissues. The mitochondrion is an organelle that draws much attention from researchers, but their study is hampered by changing in number, size, shape, and location among other things. To date, it is not understood if mitochondrial alterations could be considered to be downstream effects or are the root causes of diseases classified as neurodegenerative. It is an unresolved enigma if mitochondrion form, size, location, and number become crucial to the correct functioning of distinct cells lines and tissues, besides the role of reactive oxygen species (ROs) generated during the metabolism of glucose. The unexpected role of melanin to transform radiative energy directly into chemical energy by dissociation of the water molecule marks a milestone in the study of mitochondrial diseases.

Natural product jacaranone, 1, and three analog derivatives were synthesized and their apoptotic and necrotic activity against four cancer cell lines was tested. One of these derivatives 7, was more active than the natural product, and exhibited an important necrotic effect against three of the cell lines tested (ovarian carcinoma, liver cancer and breast cancer cells). Derivative 6 was more active than the natural product, and showed a significant apoptotic activity against breast cancer and ovarian carcinoma cells. some derivatives analyzed in this study showed promising anti-tumor results, nevertheless, further studies have to be done in order to determine their in vivo activity, their mechanism as well as their safety and stability.

Introduction and Objectives: The idiopathic sensorineural cochlear hearing loss is one of the most frequent human sensory deficits and there is no specific drug therapy for it. The possible hearing recovery is related with the reestablishment of normal ionic homeostasis of the endolymph controlled by the mineralocorticoid as could be demonstrate experimentally. The purpose of this clinical trial was to confirm the efficacy of mineralocorticoids to the recovery of hearing level in patients suffering idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss (sNHL) against the glucocorticoids and vasodilator drugs. Material and Methods: The research lasted three months and involved 90 patients allocated into four different groups: Placebo group, consisted of 20 patients (10 men and 10 women);the group consisting of 22 patients treated with glucocorticoid therapy (12 men and 10 female);the group treated with mineralocorticoid therapy encompassed 26 patients (13 males and 13 females) and the group of vasodilators formed by 22 patients (12 men and 10 women). The level of hearing loss was estimated by the tests Liminal Tone Audiometry (LTA) and Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR). Results: The main features in this research were overall better response in improving the hearing level with the mineralocorticoid therapy. This improvement in hearing levels was greater in women than in men, and a higher response was found in the left ear regardless of patient’s gender. Conclusions: The hearing gain was significantly superior in the mineralocorticoids group followed by the glucocorticoids group whereas the response to vasodilators was lesser and with no statistical significance.

Cytogenetic and Molecular Characterization of Hematological Neoplasm in an Ecuadorian Population

Cancer is one of the major causes of mortality in Ecuador and annually, hematological malignancies are within the top ten most common cancers. In this multicentric study, we analyzed a series of patients diagnosed with different hematological disorders between the years 1984 and 2012. Chromosome abnormalities were detected in 1886 (45.9%) patients. FIsH and RT-PCR techniques were used in order to determine the presence of genetic rearrangements and complement conventional cytogenetics results. Using FIsH and RT-PCR, positive cases were increased by 1.8% and 6.9% respec- tively. We analyzed fusion genes resulting from t(8;21), t(15;17), inv(16), t(9;22), 11q23 rearrangements, t(4;11) and t(1;19). The frequency of transcripts of some of these fusion genes was of particular interest as our results differ from studies on other populations. specifically, the fusion gene BCR-ABL was present in the form of the b2/a2 transcript in 95% of CML patients and in the form of b3/a2 transcript in the remaining 5%. The PML-RARA fusion gene also showed a distinct pattern of transcript expression. This fusion gene exhibited the bcr2 (36%) and bcr3 (64%) transcripts, how- ever the bcr1 transcript was absent from our sample population. All cases carrying the CBFB-MYH11 fusion gene ex- hibited the F transcript. This was also of interest due to the rarity of this particular transcript worldwide. Finally all cases carrying the MLL-AF4 fusion gene displayed the e7-e8 transcript. The frequency of the subtypes of some fusion genes differ from those reported in other populations, possibly due to the particular genetic make-up of the Ecuadorian population, mostly mestizo, as well as environmental factors.

In recent years Copper-64 in the chemical form of copper chloride ([64Cu]CuCl2) has been identified as a potential agent for PET imaging and radionuclide therapy. The aim of this research was to determine the biodistribution and the labeling of radio nanoparticle with 64CuCl2, the nanoparticles Cu(acac)2/F-TiO2 were mixed with 64CuCl2 (20-37 MBq), then the final solution was used to injected healthy Wistar rats to probe the absorption of nanoparticle inside tissue trough of the groups OH that are formed during the functionalization of the Cu(acac)2/F-TiO2. The “in vivo” evaluation after realize the images study in micro PET equipment, uptake of the radio-nanoparticle was observed in the digestive system in the healthy Wistar rats.

The aim of this study was to identify the most frequent yeasts in the oral cavity of adult individuals without immune disorders and to associate the presence of these oral yeasts with different characteristics of each individual. Oral rinse samples were obtained from 96 healthy adults and cultured in sabouraud dextrose agar media and CHROMagar. Yeasts were identified by sequencing the D1/D2 region of the 28 s rRNA gene. Probable association among the socio-demographic characteristics, body mass index, family and personal medical history,oral hygiene, tobacco and/or alcohol consumption habits and presence of oral fungi was analyzed. Contingency tables and logistic regression were employed to evaluate possible relationships between the presence of oral fungi and mixed colonization with these variables. 57.3% of the healthy individuals had oral yeasts and 21.8% had mixed colonization. The most prevalent yeasts were Candida albicans(52%), C. parapsilosis(17.9%), and ***(7.57%). Yeasts with most frequently mixed colonization were C. albicans and C. parapsilosis. No relationships were found among the variables analyzed. However, the presence of mixed colonization was related to the presence of dental prostheses(Pses(P=0.016) and O’Leary index(P=0.012). This is the first study that characterized oral yeasts in Colombian healthy individuals, determined the most prevalent oral yeasts C. albicans, C. parapsilosis and C. dublinensis and an association of mixed colonization with the use of dental prostheses and aparatology and poor hygiene.
